Well for those of you following my struggle to find a big, solid SeaRay I could afford, we finally made an offer on a Early 500DA.
Will not know if accepted or what till late tuesday but I am glad to at least get this far along. I want to thank everyone that has helped and esp FRANK. It is all appreciated more than any of you will know. Now we will wait and see what happens or as Willie would say "back on the road again". Again, guys THANK YOU, JC

I recently read about the tax Ky. is going to enforce on all boats docked in the state. That could be a hefty annual bill for a 50'er. Unless you are docking it outside of the KY border.

OH Yea...CONGRATS :smt038 I hope you get it.

Hope the offer goes through...I know you are getting great advise "behind the scenes".....

Any details of the boat?

Good Luck, Keep us posted

Thanks everybody. I really appreciate your help. Just got a counter back from broker. I stuck to my original offer as i feel its fair considering all things. We are waiting to see what happens from here.
Wishtofish: Great to hear from another bluegrass guy. It looks like the boat will be docked at FRT. LOUDON part time and FLORIDA KEYS other times. This helps ins wise and we will get alittle bit more use out of the boat. Primary purpose is BAHAMAS cruising in the summer.
The KY treasurer has decided to collect fed doc boats. This is a terrible decsion as it will effect the hugh houseboat industry here.
When i was State Rep we were very carefull to not pass legislation that would hurt our big boat industry. Iam sure the Gen Ass will take care of this either this session or next. I have a proposal that has been given to AR that would eliminate the yearly taxes. It wiil not get much play now but it will during the Gov race. We shall see?
THANKS AGAIN GUYS and keep your fingers crossed for me! JC

were pulling for you.

I read that in the paper about taxing of cost guard registered boats and really never thought about the impact on the houseboat industry. Good to know.

Took me a while to figure it out but that is Fort Loudon on Tellico Lake?

Hi JC3,

Congrats on the new boat, assuming it goes thru.

Since you had your foot in the door with Ky govt, why is it that the Marina's are the ones that get the hwy road tax rebate, and not the actual end users? We heard there was some sweetheart deal made to the marina owners and kept quiet.

Those of us on the inland lakes, at least Lake Cumberland, are paying a premium price for our fuel. All the docks here fix their prices about $1 per gallon above the street price. The river sounds much more competitive.

Just wondering. And yes that property tax has indeed raise some stink around here, with more to come. I did pay mine, and the interest, was nice that they only went back to 2005. Could have been worse.

Thanks and enjoy the new boat

Whiteknight: The off road fuel tax is atrociuos!!!!!!!!! If you will think back to 1998 (BILL)I drafted and helped pass 1. Pay tax on actual purchase price(WHAT A NOVEL IDEA) 2. Tax credit for trade in : These passed and are law Now. Then i filed the last piece of the puzzle-eliminate the yearly tax on car, truck, boats etc... In that bill or the subsequent one we had a provision to modify the off road fuel tax where it or a greater portion would have been rebated to the user. Now think back, The Gen Ass in thier wisdom spent the entire surplus (3 to 5 hundred mil depends on who you ask) and cried they could not eliminate any revenue generators the next year because the state faced a so called defecit. I said all that to say this " Your state government " wasted the opportunity
to have done as you are suggesting. Your State Senator is Tom Buford. You should call him and ask him to push for & file legislation to address this issue. I cant think who your State Rep is now, but you should contact them too. This year is a GOV race and the boating community should push the candidates for their postions. Last, if you think the ORFT Hurts boaters think what it does to the coal truck drivers who have to sometimes threaten legal action to get their money back. I know, I know to much info but i couldnt help myself! JC

Foster is near Augusta, KY (Nick Clooney) That is where I boat.

I live just south of Covington, KY.

Here are some articles regarding the tax in the local paper.

Here is the article from the Enquirer

I tried to register my boat in Ohio like some people do, but they have closed the loophole. I haven't paid the personal property tax on the newer boat yet as they don't make you pay that on the year you purchase it.

Wishtofish: That is beautifull country up there. Not going to get into the Clonneys though. It is Great to see so many KY boaters on here! By the way and to keep the tread on topic "THEY ACCEPTED OUR OFFER" now its like the dog that caught the car "NOW WHAT DO I DO" just kidding. I really do need to find a real good DETROIT DEISEL co. in South Florida to do a VERY, VERY, TOUGH you get the picture engine survey. Thanks again guys for all the help it is most certainly appreciated! :smt038 JC

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smt038

I can't wait til I'm big enough to won one of those!

My dream is to eventually retire, sell EVERYTHING I own and buy a 50'+ and just CRUISE!!!!!

Just wired the deposit. Now for a quick flight to Florida and the show should start rolling. Cant wait to see the boat in person myself. Will post pics when i return early next week. JC
