Late 90's 270 Sundancer Thread

All of a sudden I am unable to close the cabin door on my '99 270 Sundancer. Using an inspection camera, I verified my suspicion that there was a loose screw blocking the roller. There does not seem to be a good way of reaching to it except maybe drill a hole down to it from right under the windshield. Has anyone else experienced this and know how best to resolve this problem? Thank you!

The helm can actually come off. Here is one persons blog about how to get it off. I have to repair my door, so this is a project for next winter.

Have a question? While in the water boat seems to lean to the starboard side. This is with 1/4 tank of fuel, full of water and holding tank empty. No water in bilge. With water low and holding tank 3/4 full the listing is almost unbearable. Is this normal? Seems like it is excessive to me? I know the holding tanks are opposite each other but the weight distribution seems off. Not sure if there is a compartment full f water that I am missing. I did check the shower bilge and it s dry.

Any info would be helpful

Thanks

When I had mine it too listed to starboard. Not to a great degree but I would notice it against the stripes on the waterline. Never changed so I didn't worry about it.

Does anyone know where to find the oval lights for a 97? They are the small oval lights, theres one in the footwell by the cabin door and one on the steps in the cabin. They take the push in type of bulb and I think they have 3 screws, one of which holds the cover on. I cant find them anywhere. Thanks!

As far as the light I have never even taken mine apart in the cabin and the cockpit fixture was replaced with a LED light.

Ok Thanks. Thanks for the welcome! Well...mine wouldn't have been "taken apart" but as usually happens...someone took it apart with their drunk foot and broke the cover off. Not exactly the greatest engineering design SR has come up with. Maybe Ill look for something a little more flush? And hey...its a good excuse to update to LED's

EMERGENCY HELP! I am showing my 98 270 next week I was doing some bilge cleaning and I broke the nipple on the hot water heater, heat exchange side where the raw water enters. I realized you cant replace it so I am just going to replace the entire tank. I got everything off except what I think is a hold down bracket in the rear. I cant even get my head close enough to look in there and I did not have a mirror. Has anyone tackled this job and if so do you have any tips for getting it out?

The bracket in the back is the same as the one in the front. It is tight as you know. Long extension and the "Braille" method is used. If you climb on top of the engine you can see what you're up against.

Sdarc, thanks for the intel. When you say long extension it leads me to believe its a bolt or nut on the back side, the front is a Phillips screw. I actually laid on the engine and stuck my hand in there but could not for the life of me feel the screw head. They brilliantly put a bunch of hoses in that area as well to make it double difficult. I think I am going to go get myself a scope today I could use one anyway. It would have been a much easier design to just screw a bracket to the floor and have a tab that slipped under the bracket to secure the rear, and a screw down in the front.....

If it's a Phillips on the front then it's a Phillips on the back. When I changed mine I used a right angle battery drill with extension and Phillips bit. You could also use a small ratcheting bit holder. Not easy. Or get a long Phillips screw driver. Harbor Freight may have one.

Ah thats a great idea! I was actually just on HF website and was heading there at lunch to buy an extra long screw driver along w/ the scope, I will see if they have an extra long drill extension that would be much better!

Can anyone confirm whether or not there is an oil drain hose tethered to the plug in the back from the factory? I am not home to confirm, but I saw one on a parts diagram.

Mine does not have one

I was told elsewhere that our boats have an engine plate that specifies the correct spark plug and the gap.

Does anyone know where it is?

Also, what spark plug did you personally use on a 7.4L MPI?

Hi. I'm a new owner of a 1998 270SE. I was wondering if anyone has replaced the fluorescent light in the galley with LEDs or if you have replaced the plastic adjustable reading lights and/or their bulbs with LEDs.

Do not know about an engine spec plate, but have not looked either.

The spark plug information can be found here.
https://d3gqux9sl0z33u.cloudfront.n...nloads/224953/Mercruiser_v8_7.4_8.2_litre.pdf

For the 1999 L-29 MCM 7.4MPI engines with serial #s 0L010003LTS and up, the Mercruiser manual linked above lists the following spark plugs.

AC MR43LTS
Champion RV12YC
NGK BPR6EFS

The manual shows a gap of .045" or 1.1mm

Hope this helps.

If you are talking about a remote drain plug coming off the oil pan? My 1999 7.4MPI does not have one.

Mcloewen,

Welcome to CSR! I personally don't have a fluorescent in the galley, but I did replace the reading, and every light but the running lights, with LEDs. I would think that you could get more pleasant light from an LED than from a fluorescent. I even put switchables in the cockpit and in one of the head fixtures so we would have "night vision safe" lighting on the boat. I originally got a few LEDs at one place, but they were cheap, and one died, so I spent the money and got good ones from http://marinebeam.com.

You may want to ask this question in the Mid 90 270 forum: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/936-Mid-90-s-270-Sundancer-Thread. It is my understanding that the SE is based on the Mid 90's 270 design and the late 90's was a new design. I think Monaco Mike has the same boat. You can find him in that forum, and he is in the trade.
