Late 90's 270 Sundancer Thread

You are planning to take a 20lbs cylinder? Get a 5lbs cylinder to make it easier and safer.

I'd use a 20# tank just because I already have an extra. The smaller 5# or 11# tanks would certainly be easier to move around and store though.

For a tie-down anchor, I found these and like them since they are low profile when you aren't carrying a cooler or tub with them. They'll work with any cooler/tub that has handles or another way to connect a strap or bungee. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Keeper-2-3-4-in-Oval-Plate-Recessed-Anchor-89312/204820606

I have a standard snap-davits mounted to my swim step that carries my RIB. I currently raise and lower it manually with some line I clip to the handle. I'd love to rig some sort of winch system. Ideally the winch would be atop a post mounted to the swim step. I see it all the time but can't really find anything for constructing it online. Ideas, information or suggestions?

You will want stainless as those will rust in a short time.

I just bought a 2001 Sundancer 270 Wide with no bottom paint, single 7.4, Kohler Gen, ac, windlass, etc and would like some opinions on bottom paint. I have a slip and setup for a lift behind my house and can have a 10,000lb lift installed or paint the bottom and leave it in the water. I live in Chester, VA with fresh water (20 miles South of Richmond) and have concerns about using a bilge heater which I will need to add.

Should I paint the bottom or install the lift?

Can the bilge heater keep the bilge warm enough on a lift?

Excited to hear from everyone and glad to be part of the Sea Ray community!

Welcome! You will definitely enjoy the boat! We love ours.

I would go with the lift. While there will be a speed loss from the paint, that is the least of your concerns. First, your B3 outdrive is known for electrolysis issues. Second, the boat will have a higher moisture content in the hull. Third, any leaks will be constantly dampening the core. Four, applying or paying to apply bottom paint sucks. Fifth, no electrolysis on any other surface. Sixth, failure of an underwater thru-hull doesn't equal sunk boat. Sixth, you can inspect the bottom and running gear after every use. Seventh, no barnacles growing ANYWHERE on your boat. Eighth, . . . well, you get the picture.

The downside is lift maintenance. A dry boat when not in use is a happy boat when not in use. I pay a bit extra at my marina for a lift, but it is well worth it.

As to the bilge heater, it isn't strictly necessary so long as the boat is properly winterized. A properly sized bilge heater will keep the block warm enough, but it should be aimed at the block. That being said, I winterize AND use a bilge heater and have really good peace of mind. If the power goes out, I should still be good. You will need to winterize or put in the bilge heater sooner since a boat on a lift will freeze much sooner than a boat in the water. If you do use the bilge heater, you can easily extend your season until it is time to put her to bed completely. I winterized after Christmas this year, and relied on the bilge heater until then.

p.s. Can you tell I am a lift enthusiast?

Thanks for the reply, I have had it out twice already and can tell its going to be the perfect boat for us. All good points on the lift, I am going to schedule to have one installed as soon as possible. We are a little farther South from you and I think I can avoid winterizing the engine by installing the bilge heater. The boat will be used on warm days throughout the winter so if the bilge heater and winterizing the fresh water system will work that is what we will do.

Do you know what is the simplest solution to replacing the stereo? Not into huge sound systems and would just like to change the head unit out with a blue tooth compatible unit.

Thanks!

Does anyone know a direct replacement for the swim / boarding ladder? I have the mount and 1st step but the last 3 are missing. The two listed at great lakes skipper do not appear to be the same dimensions. I would prefer to not drill new holes in my boat if possible. Btw thumbs up to xtreme bilge heaters mine is working great.

The simplest solution is just that, replace the head unit. It is a standard size. You will lose the remote at the helm, but gain Bluetooth. Expect to have to cut off the Clarion connector, but it is a 20 minute job. I had to swap out my head unit this summer because the Clarion died.

Also, you may be able to add a Bluetooth dongle, if there is an RCA input, but it would have to be powered or rechargeable and at that rate you may find it just as easy to change the head unit.

Thanks Bryan, I just removed the head unit and I am going to take it to Best Buy with me. I tried the fm transmitter but the quality was terrible and kicked around getting power for the dongle.. Just as easy to put a new one in and use my phone with bluetooth for a remote.

What is your email? I cannot get photos to upload on this site for some reason.

Kyle,

You have to be a sponsor to post anything substantial, but using a photobucket account and pasting a link works better. Still, become a sponsor and make sure the site keeps running.

Bryan,

I created a photo bucket account with a few of the boats photos on it. Can you tell by the pictures what kind of ladder would replace the one I have?

Thanks,

Kyle,

The good news: I am 99.9% sure we have the same ladder.

The bad news: mine is wrapped in plastic and I can't get near the ladder.

I remember it seemed to be a not common manufacturer, that specialized in ladders, as I looked at it last year, but I can't remember the name. If you still need it, I can tell you in the spring when I unwrap.

Also, you don't have to share your Photobucket account link. You can share just the picture and it will embed in your post. If you go to the page that has your picture, you can use the "Direct" link (I think) and the picture just appears in your post. If it is not that link, try the others.

I may have that ladder in my storage. I took mine off when I put the Swimplatform on but will not be able to check until late spring.

I can send you a check through the mail or pay pal if you happen to make it out there before then. What would be a fair price? Thanks for following up.

Thanks for the advice Bryan! If you happen to remember please let me know, I am 95% ready for Spring.. I put in a new Sony Blue tooth head unit and to my surprise the previous owner had one heck of a nice sound system.

I might have some pictures oh the ladder. My memory says it was not in perfect condition. I'll try to find them and we will go from there. It is in winter storage and defiantly is not going anywhere until I get the boat out in June.

Hi all. I plan on installing a marine tv antenna and tv. I have a after market radar arch and was wondering where the best place is to install the TV? I intend on running coaxle cable from arch into the cabin. Thinking the TV placement may be best in v berth or main cabin?.?. Pics would be nice to see if anyone has any available? 1998 270 7.4 mag
