Key West bound

Thats interesting, I havnt had what i would call a bad experience there, but wouldn't call the food memorable. We were just discussing a trip down and she said she would like to go there again. Honestly, I havnt found any of the cuisine in the keys a special, maybe because im spoiled being in the Metro NY area.

last time there it was shore leave time and Duvall St was like Bangkok, so the hole in the wall places werent on our radar.

South Beach, on the other hand had some great choices, and you can dine till 1 AM.
The only place that stands out for us is latitudes.. great food and view. We have had some great times there some of the best ….. and most expensive
We came back on the boat one time just hammered and the kardashian sisters were on the boat…just us and them. We had some good laughs with them as they were about as hammered as us

unfortunately latitudes is booked solid thru March. The girl said call everyday to see if a cancellation …since they won’t keep a list…. Life must be good on the island

I was at Latitudes once, I just remember being told we had to stay on the path from the shuttle to the restaurant. Being real estate people, we wanted to look around a little.

I haven't been there in a few years but I don't see where anyone mentioned Pepe's. It's a tradition, you have to stop by for 1!

That’s breakfast…. The shack across the street on the corner… can’t think of the name… that’s a good place for 1

we rented a house 3 doors down from there and our neighbor was the dad that owns hot tuna…on that tuna fishing show. We would meet there every morning for a shot of tequila…

If we have digressed into breakfast, it used to be Damn Good Food for me, next door to A&B in the breezeway. But we were staying in A&B docks, so it was a no brainer. A short crawl.

You're probably right.

The beaches on Sunset seem so much nicer then on KW, we're thinking of staying at the cottages on Sunset next time, and just shuttling over to Duvall for entertainment.

We looked at cottages a long time ago and they were crazy expensive. Most we paid for a house in old town was $12k for 10 days 3 couples. This year a friend gave us his house he just bought. That’s his second home in old town… but I thought very generous
The Cottages Resort seems to be offering reserve 4 nights, get 5th night free. Not sure what they cost but based on the pics, it may be worth it.

I need more friends like yours ;)

Haven’t seen pics yet :)

Yikes…. Have at it.

I have never been to Key West, but a buddy of mine I play hockey with has gone every winter for many years with his wife. He loves it, she "likes it". But his idea of a vacation is to sit in the bars and restaurants and drink most of the day, and then walk the streets and bars at night and do the same (then repeat). I know its beautiful there, but if I want to sit in a bar and drink all day/night, I can do that here. He has been trying to convince us to go there with them some time. Thinking about it.

Is there enough to do in Key West that is NOT sitting and drinking/eating? I love to fish and would offshore fish a lot if I was there with other guys that fish, but that won't fly with my wife. So help me understand what a vacation in Key West is like (or maybe the keys more broadly)? We'll probably go some time after I retire (count down is on - maybe 9 months from now) and I am wintering down in SWF, but help me plan what it will be like.

I’ll go with your friend…. He sounds like fun :)

For me Key West was a day trip. Do some sightseeing and watch the madness at sunset. Islamorada and Marathon were my favorites of the Keys.

Without a boat or means to get out to the water the Keys are dirt clods in the ocean. My opinion... Aside from tourist things to do there just isn't much of interest or palette satisfaction. We've run the boat down to Key West and really have a pretty good time for two days at most.... I probably have no reason other than fishing and diving to go back.

Key West, IMO, is great in small doses. Certainly there are other things to do there, but for us it’s 4 or 5 days at a time to let our hair down a little and people watch. It’s a party place.
When we spent time in the keys on the boat, we stayed in Marathon. We felt that it was more boat friendly with places to go by dinghy (and half the price, that really matters at least for us when your staying 2 months). We took the boat to Key West for 4 days so we could enjoy it and not have to ride back to Marathon on the bus. If we were going for a weeks vacation, we’d definitely go to Kew West though.
If you are going to be in south west Florida, IMO, probably the best way to go to Key West for a getaway is on the Key West Express. We like other places in Florida better for longer term stays.
