I know hurricane Earl may not be a direct hit on Long Island, but I'm wondering if anyone is pulling their boat.

If Earl's track changes to directly hit L.I. would you pull your boat?

And lastly, I know this is impossible for anyone to answer, but should I pull my boat? I'm in a Marina that's right on the north side of the Great South bay with a 50 foot stretch of land maybe 5 foot above sea level between my boat and the Great South Bay. I'm guessing the answer depends on the height of the hurricane tide. Has anybody heard any tide predictions?

Thanks

Years ago here in Maryland we had a 30ft when a storm got real close and we had her pulled. It was a wise decision.
Good luck to all.

it all depends on your boat insurance  but if you have a trailer I would take it out and bring the boat inland without any hesitation

It's part of my policy. There is no deductible on pulling the boat if there is a "warning for a named storm" or something like that... I think the max is $1500 which has more than covered it in the past when I've pulled it. Cheaper than paying me if the thing sinks.

Just curious, Where do you put it when the boat is pulled? Not specifically, but how far from the water? On blocks? Will yours even fit on a trailer?

In Knoxville I don't give much thought to named storms.

I am not going to pull her--she is in a very protected marina. I am however worried about the rising tide and canvas in the wind.

Therefore, I will probably move her forward about 5 feet and adjust the spring lines (I have a little finger walk that is about 10' long) throw some extra fenders and lines on her, and monitor the canvas.

if worse comes to worse and i need to remove the canvas, I will hang in my truck to run the pumps every so often. I wish I had a cockpit cover but that is not the case.

This is my first storm with the boat so, I will be there anyway if it hits and what's nice is that I can pull right up to the boat in the truck--boat will be 15 feet away from me.

hurricane shmurricane. I'm going for a cruise.

Because easier for me to do one post in lieu of 10 different posts! I cheat on CSR and follow many sites, blogs, forums, etc........I do have a job that consumes 99% of my day and pays the bills...

I leave mine in. Covered moorage in a protected bay off the Potomac. We get some wind and high tides, but that seems to be the worst of it. I ride it out on the boat. If the water level gets to high like it has in the past, they have to secure the power pedestals. I just bring the genny up and watch TV with a cool drink in my hand.

I don't think your canvas is going to be a problem, Vince. I left our boat at another marina near Annapolis for a week last year when one of the big storms came through. I left the camper top on, so I drove down there with the intention of removing it. By the time I got there, the winds were between 30-45 mph and the canvas was just fine. I stayed with her until the storm passed. I think there were a few stronger gusts, but they didn't have much effect either. I don't think they topped 50 mph at any point though. I wouldn't worry until at least 65mph, and at that point we've got bigger problems.

I did get a kick out of seeing all of the blowboat sails coming unfurled and shredding themselves. That hardware really tears things up when it starts whipping around. There was something metal hanging off of the end of a sail on one moored nearby and it was bashing both sides of the boat as it whipped back and forth. It was a hundred yards or so away, and the sound of whatever it was hitting the hull was like someone 5' away hammering a nail. Never got a close up look at it after the storm but I know that a boatyard somewhere got a hull repair job.

yeah. . I know my boat insurance will not cover damage due to a "named storm".

Gary's policy is clearly different than mine.

Everyone should be aware of what is in their specific policy.

My policy provides similar coverage to Gary's. I think it's pretty standard in bigger boat policies. Right now the boat and my wife are on Fire Island at Watch Hill. I'll be there by mid-day tomorrow. I'm planning on staying given the current forecast but that could change tomorrow or Thursday....we'll just have to see.

My policy pays 50% of haul out if there is a watch or a warning issued.
