Great Lakes Ice Update.

Sounds like the fishing in Michigan City is pretty good right now...

"If you knew the fishing would be this good on the other side, would you be willing to put up with every winter being as miserable as last?

For shore-bound salmon and trout anglers, that's a certain "yes."

A phenomenal few weeks of coho catches have been complimented by a sensational steelhead run on the local streams.

Both have been the best in decades and appear to be linked to the record-cold winter.

Steelies of all sizes and shapes continue to surge at the Springland Ave. lamprey barrier on Trail Creek. Officials have lifted 1,000 above the dam in recent weeks and its likely an equal number of steelies have leaped the dam on their own during high water.

The scene at the barrier was impressive at mid-week.

There were bright, silvery fresh-runs and gorgeous, rainbow-colored spawners. Two-pound skippers and 12-pound, loggerhead Skamania. All were in a rush to get upstream.

The oddest thing is this is April. Normally, the local steelhead spawn is winding down, if not completely over by now.

Seems like the steelies were stockpiling for a break in temperatures, which only came recently."

Hey Boltman, yea I'm still around - a bit older, greyer, and a lot more creaks - but still around. Good luck on the splash, hope you don't need an ice scraper. Snowing again here and now rivers flooding for some folks.

Ok Here we go another 3-4 inches of snow is predicted for the lower peninsula, UP is getting hammered with the white stuff, we were supposed to launch on Tuesday, I called Marina, they postponed everything until Friday, seems they are a little afraid of Water systems and engines freezing with 26* temps predicted at night down in muskegon....It's not over yet boys....

Twenty two Tuesday night. Last two weekends Coast Guard cancelled ice breaking on Saginaw Bay. To much ice.

We did a total refit of electronics and other major components this winter. The boat is set to go but needs a shake down cruise on Lake Michigan to calibrate radar, compass, autopilot, etc., but there is so much ice off the Grand Haven harbor it will not happen for a while. Last night there was ice all the way to the horizon.

I know I was looking on the web cam today, Damn that Ice is staying right there in GH.... Whitehall is Clear, but it also depends on the winds and Ice Flow....We're all just being too impatient.... Let's all just take a long breathe and clear our heads, summer will be here soon, and Damn I'm hoping for 90's, only on the weekends though.......

A far cry from when I launched on Wednesday.

Pretty sure this is the first time she's seen snow :smt089

I'm doing maintenance on tractors in a heated garage. Needs to be done and it's therapeutic. Our spring clean up is done but needs a touch up after the gale force winds over the last 24 hours. At least we are not dealing with downed trees and floods. Water levels are up nicely on Spring Lake.

I had to take a piece of equipment into Buffalo today, I got a good look at the lake from the Skyway. I know a lot of ice has melted on Lake Erie, and the guys that are launching up the Lake around Catawba are proof, but except for open water inside the outer harbor breakwall, It looks pretty much the way it did in February, Ice as far as I could see.

Looks like the straights still have a fair amount of ice. Cutters are escorting some of the big boats through, up the St. Mary's and on into Superior. I think the water is going to be pretty cold for some time this season....

"It’s Mid-April And Coast Guard Is Still Battling Thick Great Lakes Ice"

"CHICAGO (CBS) — Almost one month into spring, and the U.S. Coast Guard is still breaking up ice around the Great Lakes.

The Coast Guard on Wednesday released video of the cutter Morro Bay carving up ice in the harbor in Marquette, Mich., nestled along the shores of Lake Superior.

The ice was preventing the delivery of coal to the area, needed to power local mining operations.

The ice-breaking operations began after a difficult and lengthy escort from in Duluth, Minn.

During the trip, the guard used satellite imagery to find openings in the ice.

The crews’ efforts helped keep local mining operations open by allowing the commercial carriers Mesabi Miner and Kaye E. Barker to offload coal to the power plant that is the sole supplier of electricity to the mines.

Ice in Marquette harbor was reported to be up to 24 inches thick.

This winter, the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan, were 93 percent covered in ice, which is a record.

The Coast Guard also conducted ice breaking operations along Chicago’s shoreline after a record 25 days of temperatures at zero or below this winter."

1956olds, yes we are in Lake City, west side. We live on one of the small inland lakes, keep the big boat on Lake Michigan.

We developed and maintain the Lake City Weather website, adding an extensive area for Great Lakes weather - zone forecast, wind, waves, water temps. It has been a long winter so needed something to do.

Sounds like your sister has quite the fleet, both on the water and above the water :)

Well, it's official! The weather has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder
