Great Lakes Ice Update.

I can almost see all of my driveway. After three inches of ice have melted. i was not here for the last snow melt and it froze solid.it has been too cold for the salt to work but its looking better now.

Woody- nice pic. Reminds me of how many parking spaces we lost at work due to the piles. SPRING-Its coming! Strong west wind and temps in the low 40's today. Tomorrow even better. Next issue is Snow melting w/ deep frost. Our county is already worried about bad flooding. Just hope some of it stays around and improved the water tables.

I went to our marina yesterday to measure a few slips.the ice is still about 3 ft thick in the marina and channel.Four wheelers and snowmobiles were on the bay with fishermen ,hundreds of them.the ice is about 30 " out there.Last week there was a motor home 5 miles out from linwood all set up for a week of fishing.Good news the saginaw river was open in the channel from I75 to almost skipper buds.

Ice conditions on Georgian Bay as of yesterday. Brutal!!! :smt021

As a comparison, I drew a little line where the ice maxed out from shore down in our end of the Bay last year - i.e., no comparison. I'm thinking we may get to launch by July!!!! :smt100

"That picture was taken by an astronaut on board the International Space Station, and shows some small islands in Lake Michigan (for a sense of scale, the long skinny one on the right is Detroit Island, which is about 7 km (4.5 miles) long). The islands are connected by thick ice floating on the lake, so remind me to visit this place in the summer, not the winter.

Anyway, see those long, skinny, twisty white lines in the water? Those are ice stringers (probably not their official name, but EO used it and I like it); ice and snow blown into the lake by southwesterly winds (note that north is to the lower left in this picture). The ice starts on the islands, but the wind blows it onto the water from points that stick out into the water. As the EO site notes, the thickness of the stringer depends on the width of the source of the ice on land in the direction of the wind."

Man, I'm sure it's nice in the summer, but for Winter and Spring....No thanks.

As of 3-24 ice still being made on the great lakes 5-8 above last night. Will not have to worry about ice for cocktails for a while.

The Grand Haven harbor is ice free now and has been for about 3 days. Norris Creek at the north end of Spring Lake is open and flowing into the lake which means the ice will start going out of Spring Lake soon. Spring Lake is open at the south end by the river. I'm pulling the bubbler out of my slip the first warm day this week so it does not go away with the ice.

I was down in St. Joe Thursday and Friday - someone out in some sort of kayak Friday morning south of channel entrance. Must've been cold!

I listened to a radio interview of the guy that rents ice fishing huts out of our marina in the winter. He was complaining about the law that they have to remove the huts after March 15th and there was still over 30 inches of ice in most of Penetang harbour on March 15th. Oh well, lots of time for on land spring maintenance.

This is a link to the:
THIRTY DAY ICE OUTLOOK FOR THE GREAT LAKES ISSUED BY THE NORTH AMERICAN ICE SERVICE ON 14 MARCH 2014 FOR MID-MARCH TO MID-APRIL

Some lovely tidbits for us on GBay:

Georgian Bay.

End of March… Consolidated very thick lake ice in shallower coastal waters. 7 to 10 tenths thick and very thick lake ice elsewhere except for open water leads in the southwestern portion of the bay.

Mid-April… Consolidated very thick lake ice in shallower coastal waters. 7 to 9 tenths very thick lake ice in the southern end of the bay. Open water elsewhere.

Nothing changing here on the big lake yet, -5 again last night. Took a snowmobile ride on the ice around Grand Island today , it's been many years since this could be done. Any time of the Winter let alone the end of March. May 1st does not look good.
here are a few pictures:

Very nice snow machines.

Spring doesn't arrive near the lake until the water temperature is about 55-60, otherwise any time the wind blows off the lake, the air temp will match the water.
