I have always dreamed of owning an exotic car and am finally at the point where I can make it possible! I already am aware that it is a stupid purchase with deprecation, but so is boating! I looked at an 05 f430 and really liked it however I'm not 100% sold on ferarri! I'm curious if anyone here went with something else and why?

1969 Iso Grifo would be my choice, however for a modern era car 1999 Ferrari F355 GTS

Although not in same class as a Ferrari, I used to own a Convertible Cobra Mustang. 405 Horses and great handling, I loved that car and drove it almost every day. Neck snapping acceleration at a reasonable price. Only a Corvette would whoop me at the drag strip, even then not till 3rd gear.

Thumb up for both!!! I agree that the F355, not convertible and manual shift, is the best of the modern Ferraris. I love the Dino 246 though...

But best driver's cars is a Lotus!

new Z06 Corvette....period.

+1. A new Corvette will be in my driveway......someday. I owned a 1976 Corvette and used it as my daily driver. Loved every minute in it.

All great cars above - it sounds like fun is number 1 so in the f430 I love the spider.

If it does matter - and it may not (In my case the admiral made the decision it mattered a lot when hobby car shopping) - with a bit of work there is a way to have fun and not have depreciation - air cooled Porsches, 964 speedsters, Americas cup - are in the same price range as the Ferrari and have been appreciating like crazy last few years.
356 is going to cost a lot more but still a good investment - I do not know enough about the collector profile for ferraris but some of them will most certainly be appreciating assets.

If you are looking for lower maintenance, find a front engine V12 car like a 550/575/612/599. I know these are different cars than you were looking at, but I personally wouldn't care for a mid engine V8 car older than a 458. If you have never owned a "fun" car that came from Europe, I'd look at a 911 turbo first. I've been around the European super cars for 15 years and this is what I'd do if I was you. In fact, the 575 is a car on my short list(don't tell my wife).

Porsche 911. Got a 4S a year ago and love it. I have never driven a car that handles as well and looks so good sitting in the driveway or doing 150 on a track.. I literally miss it if I have not driven it for a few days. Good luck. P.S. Some car guys don't consider a Porsche exotic, but I don't care what you call it, other than unbelivably fun and exhilerating! Good luck with your search.

On a side note, I make donations to Autism, MS and Wounded Warriors Project.

If speed, handling, and the power to embarrass a lot of "supercars" is on your list, you can't get much better than a Nissan GTR, it may not be "exotic" but, it is fun. I used to own an R33GTR back in Europe, and, it was tremendous.

On a side note, my friend just bought a new Lamborghini Huracan. He took me for a ride in it. It is pretty impressive. He just sold his Ferrari. Much rougher ride.

I just rented a VW Beatle at the Fort Myers airport yesterday. Does that count??

After 3 years with National they finally gave me a free upgrade.

I have 911 4S cabriolet... Agree that not nearly as exotic as a Ferrari but excellent performance, looks and sounds great, and bullet-proof reliability to boot...

How do you plan to use the car? Daily driver? Weekend back roads? Cars and coffee? Track? All of these will have a huge impact on what to consider. What's your tolerance for maintenance costs? How many miles a year will you put on it?

I love Ferraris but have yet to own one. I track my cars regularly and need something that can take a trashing but not break the bank for maintenance. The Ferrari is very capable and the cost of entry isn't 'too' unreasonable, however the cost of maintenance is very high. And because so many Ferraris are garage queens (nothing wrong with that) if you actually use yours it'll depreciate far greater than the low mile ones. in that world miles, maintenance and no stories are kings of resale. So that being said, if it'll be a low mileage weekend cruiser you'll love the car. I personally love the 430. Great handling, looks, and 'reliability' but not the cost of a 458.

If you're going to track it then consider a Porsche, and more specifically one of the GT cars. Amazing tactile feel and can take a whipping and keep on ticking.
