CSR Northeast Flotilla 2016

Very quiet these neck of the woods for a big trip that's only a few weeks away!
Wake up ladies let's start planning!

The fact that thread's auto notifications stopped working, doesn't help to stay in the loop.

I suggest we get the events that require advanced reservation going and then we can move on to other items.

Now that we have made our summer plans we wont be joining for the whole week but we will be there for Shelter Island. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Those who will be traveling with the flotilla to MV, we need to start discussion our fuel and water stops. I usually get fuel in Menemsha, to my knowledge it's the cheapest place in the area. But, it's a tiny Marina which can take only two boats at the time. Having 10-15 boats in the caravan can make this into very long fueling procedure. Let's discuss the options and best way to go about it.

I just checked with VH Marina and they no longer sell fuel. However, Tisbury Wharf fuel dock has both gas and diesel. As of today's prices, diesel is .10c and gas .15c more than in Menemsha. They can fuel up 2 diesel and 2 gas boats at the time.

I'd say that considering that we'll have about 85NM cruising distance and will be staying in the area for 4-5 days, it makes sense to fill the tanks upon arrival and not worry about fuel, especially to have genies running quite a bit.

Your thoughts?

I am confident I will need to fuel up upon arrival as the cruise over will pretty well drain my tanks. Again as a newbie to the area I will defer to those with local knowledge and "follow the crowd."

I would also presume that with the various cruise speeds of the different boats in the group, everyone may not arrive at the exact same time. That could give us some room in between fuel ups.

On my way to shelter I plan to stop at either shinnecock inlet (if I run outside) or right after the locks of I run inside to top off the tanks. I think that should get me to mv so when I get there or wherever you guys plan to stop I'll top then off again. I'm with Harold on this I'm just following the crowd

I forgot to look at the prices when I was there a few weeks ago becasue I didn't need fuel but Oak Bluffs marina has fuel again and last year it was cheaper than anywhere else. Falmouth Marine in Falmouth harbor is a short ride across the bay and usually has cheap fuel as well. Either one of those would only take you 10min out of your way before rafting up.
Also, if you guys need any provisions Falmouth has grocery stores, west marine, liquor stores right near the harbor so if you guys need anyhting or want to plan a food run at that point in the trip I will have my cars in falmouth at my slip and can get you guys where you need to go easily. There are a few empty slip on my docks so tying up for a little while won't be an issue.

Did anyone else have a chance to look at Tugboats menu? Do you want me to try to get a reservation set up for there while we are in Hyannis?

Jeremy, thanks for taking the lead on this and my crew is perfectly fine with Tugboats restaurant.

Folks, let's get more feedback going and get the place reserved.

Harold,
You're 100% correct that few boats will be out of sync speed wise. One other thing we have to keep in mind that it's preferred for all bridge boats to stay together in order to clear the bridge heading to the pond. I guess we can play it by ear and see how many boats we have and how we're doing on timing. But, I just wanted to brings these points out so we have some preliminary planning and properly set expectations.

Tugboats sounds good to me too. Thanks Jeremy.

I am all for having a plan, so I would love to get more info on the possible fueling options to get an idea of where to stop. I would like to have a couple of places that can be my "I need fuel NOW" stops if I end up burning more than I thought I would on the journey over. And the "I'd like to make it to ......" place within my expected range with the good fuel price that is a quick hop to the Pond.

Jeremy, Thanks for the offer with Falmouth. I would likely want to, and need to, top off my water tank too, so Jeremy's dock may come in handy for that (leaving Greg's supply for others) and doing a re-supply run, if I need stuff.

Harold,

I'm not sure how your fuel supply will be when leaving Coecles, I would pay close attention on the fact that we'll be passing by Montauk, which is very convenient stop to get fuel. Having said that, IMO gas boats with similar dilemma should have the following plan:

Leave a bit earlier, Coecles -> fuel stop in Montauk (Star Isl Marina) -> fuel stop in Vinyard Haven Tisbury Marina -> Lagoon Pond.

This puts everyone in comfort zone fuel wise and we can have groups of boats travelling at similar speed. It would be best if slower vessels leave earlier, as every fuel stop will eat up about 1hr of your time.

Alex just have a question. Why r we going to take an indirect route down around acabonack Harbour when we can go a more direct route up through Gardiner pt? Just curiouse. I'm thinking fuel is your reason but I could be wrong

Just a FYI - the tisbury warf diesel pumps are the slowest pumps I have ever used - and depending on size of boats I would not count on more than 2
at a time - recollection is it's a L shaped dock not more than 50 or so feet each side and one side goes to shore so it's one boat bow in.

I would suggest you head into Falmouth if you all want to fuel as a group. There are 3-4 places that sell fuel most can do 2-3 at a time, you can divide and conquer.

Note that there are very few places for fuel between Block and MV except long runs out of the way into Newport. If you MUST get fuel you can pull into Westport but be cautious of the entrance in a SW breeze, it can get a little crazy getting around the pile of rocks that "starts" the channel.

Another option is into New Bedford, a great option for diesel boats since there is so much commercial activity there the prices are very low. I dont know current prices this year, I haven't yet done a fill up. Its a bit out of the way but not horrible, I would suggest you go through Quicks hole (straight south from New Bedford) on the run to MV if you take that option. The two places for fuel in New Bedford is Fairhaven Shipyard just inside the Hurricane Dike (to the right going in) or C-Fuels all the way in on the left.

Thanks Alex. Looking at the chart, I was wondering what you think about stopping in Threemile Harbor for fuel? Seems to be a close by, straight shot out of Coecles then lets me run around north of Gardiner's and on to MV. As I have not been there before, are fuel prices on par with Montauk?

I just made a few quick calls about fuel prices for gas.

This is what I got:
Falmouth Marine - $3.29 per gallon.
MacDougall’s Cape Cod Marine - $3.33 per gallon
Tisbury Wharf - $2.99 per gallon
All are 89 Octane.
Menemsha Texaco - $3.05 per gallon (gas - didn't get octane rating)

Sorry but I did not ask about diesel prices.

Harold,

The difference between going north of Gardiner's vs. south of it hugging the shoreline is only about 2 miles or so. In the past we always took the southern route, as it made more sense "strategically".

1. You have plenty of fuel options.
2. You get extra protection from the island for much longer period (unless of course we get NE or NW winds at the time), before you become exposed to the seas.
3. There's much more scenery, and if we split there's a opportunity for the group to re-unite and continue cruising together.

It worked well in the past, so I was planning to do the same.

3MH vs. Montauk - looking at the chart, we have much straighter shot out of Coecles to about G"13" (see attached). If you take this approach, then you'll be passing Montauk much closer than 3MH. Distance from connecting point of the route to East Hampton Maria is about 2.5nm. If it makes sense to you to fill up there vs. Star Isl, it certainly not a bad option. Wether you going to gain much out of it, I'm not sure. I would not go north of Gardiner's from 3MH, I would just follow southern route.

Thanks. Southern route it is. Star Island, here I come!!!

It's been a few years since I've been there but doesn't Coecle's Harbor Marina sell gas and diesel? Seems like you're right there.

Diesel yes, gas no.
