Baltimore Inner Harbor 2009

Actually, I am in charge of the scoring committee for docking re-dos. We are preparing official scoring committee paddles with a numbering system from 1-10; 10 is reserved for the Captain who demonstrates mastery of the close quarters maneuvering art; that rare Captain who gently places his (her) boat precisely where he (she) wants it with no muss, and no fuss. Bonus points are awarded if this manevuer is executed with screaming children and barking dogs aboard.

A score of 1 is typically accompanied by significant dock rash, unfortunate crunching noises, and a cacophany of cursing, shouting and revving engines.

regards

Ok, We're in for the Inner Harbor East CSR weekend. Went to the marina today to put a deposit on a slip. Entire street blocked by construction so it's a good thing everyone will be arriving by boat. What a mess!. Traffic that is. Do we need to notify any member in charge of the event? Looking forward to making new boating friends.

Sir, may I suggest a caveat to the scoring system? To level the playing field, consider a mandatory 1 point deduct for every use of a bow thruster.

I will take Mr. Suns' reply as a second.
By show of hands, all in favor of the thruster usage point decrement motion?
All opposed?
Motion passed.
The committee thanks you, Sir, for your insightful comments regarding bow thruster (and stern thruster) usage. The docking committee shall amend the scoring system appropriately.

That's ok... I'll drop the jet boat in the water and use it as a tug boat.

wait a minute. I'm not even going to this stupid party.

Nevermind.

Re: Baltimore Inner Harbor 2009 - attendance list

Let's see what the numbers look like as far as who anticipates attending. I am aware of three boats arriving from Prince William Marina:

Irregardless - 320 DA
Campbell Sloop - 44 DB
Steps Ahead - 450 EB

I just got off the phone with Millie to confirm that we have the party tent this year unfeterred by sailboaters. As it turns out, the Rock Hall Sailing Club (based in my marina... and I am even a member:wow:) with whom we pissed over the tent last year, is coming the previous week so they don't have to deal with us scary power boaters and our loud stereos.

I told her I'd call her back in a couple of weeks to get a final count. In the meantime, everyone who wants to go should be sure to send a $15 per night deposit to the marina, or call them at 410-625-1700. Be sure to let them know you are with us.

Feel free to chime in here if you're coming, but I will post the list from Millie in a few weeks.

Sandy’s Beach has just changed our reservations. We were originally scheduled for just Saturday night only, but have changed plans to come in on Friday for the entire weekend. Confirmed with Millie yesterday.

Revelation is often like a bolt of lightning. I suddenly was struck this morning that my wife is going to be out of the country for BIH weekend. I might be able to make it by boat this year! I need to see if I can make this work, but it's an idea. The only minus is that the Atlantic City trip is the following weekend. Lots of back and forth travel and the dog is positively going to hate it.

Best regards,
Frank

Frank-

Have you considered keeping the boat in Baltimore that week and then heading up to AC?

No, but that's a heck of an idea. Downside would be getting from BIH home and back again to BIH. Then convincing my wife that a short ride in the Ocean would be OK. And then hoping like heck that the Delaware Bay won't be rough so that my wife doesn't kill me on the way back. Maybe if she'll drive down to A.C... That might be the ticket!

Thanks for the idea, Stan!

Oh goody! Glad to hear that. I guess the 6 or 8 trips I made across it with only one or two good crossings must have been anomalous.

I've found the Del Bay to be tolerable 1/3 of the time, a mill pond 1/3 of the time and a real pain in the a$$ the remaining 1/3 of the time. The currents you can predict and plan for, the wind you can not. NOAA will give you a vague sense of what the wind might be 12 hours in advance, but note the use of the words "vague" and "might". Probably half of my "tolerable" and "mill pond" passages have been during posted Small Craft Advisories. Make your plans (for the currents) take your chances, and go!

Hope to see you there in person and by boat Frank! I wouldn't be too surprised if the marina would offer some sort of discount for a week stay when you're not on the boat. They're a pretty reasonable bunch, call and ask for Captain Bill. Also, for transportation, there is an Amtrak station a short cab ride away.
