Pirates capture four Americans in yacht

Four Americans sailing a yacht off the coast of East Africa have been taken hostage by Somali pirates, U.S. officials confirmed in news reports Sunday.
The yacht is headed to Somalia under surveillance by a U.S. Navy warship and helicopters.
The yacht is owned by a retired couple from San Diego that has been sailing the world for seven years distributing bibles to churches and schools in villages. Two friends of the couple were also onboard the yacht.
Reports indicate the sailors cut back their use of radio and satellite systems so their position couldn’t be tracked as they sailed across the Indian Ocean towards the Horn of Africa, to no avail.
There are 29 ships and 660 crewmembers being held hostage in Somali waters awaiting ransom payments, according to the International Maritime Organization.
Last week pirates seized two loaded supertankers.
The U.S. Navy was able to rescue the captain of a U.S.-flagged merchant vessel in 2009 when he was taken hostage and held in a lifeboat in the spring of 2009. The surviving abductor was sentenced in a New York court last week to 34 years in jail.

Re: Outrage

Very sad situation. I just question their judgement in being there.

Re: Outrage

That's bad thing to have happen while spreading the word, hope they are OK. At least they weren't eaten by Amazon cannibals like one of my relatives.

Re: Outrage

I don't know, but sailing off the coast of East Africa is not something that has been without very publicised consequences over the last few years. Maybe they can reform the pirates with the good book. Really, why the heck would you do that? Come on now. This incident could be easily predicted. I hope they enjoy their new homeland.

Where's an assault rifle when ya need it?

Are you serious? If this is true Woody that's crazy sh!t right there!!!

Re: Outrage

Yes it's true, happened about 110yrs ago. Things sure changed since, wonder if you could even find a real cannibal now days.

If you could, I wonder what Peta's view would be toward them??

Re: Outrage

Instead of playing war games at tax dollor expense, send in a carrier group and get rid of them.:smt038

Well, how is sending a carrier saving $$$? That's a lot of bacon to turn a carrier around to save a couple. There are anti pirates boats in the area like the one on their heels right now, but I don't think turning a carrier around will be helpful. That's like a bull chasing a fly.

Re: Outrage

I wouldn't waste my time. Its time to stop spending a kings ransom to save people who put themselves in bad spots. Sad as it is. They knew better. Let their family foot the bill.

This **** has been going on to long..it has to stop...
we have to act and stop this terrible tragedy

Re: Outrage

Very sad. But I too have to wonder why they would sail those waters with all the news of pirates these days. I'm not a proponent of guns, but I would have had something on board to protect my vessel and those aboard.

"Interesting" times we live in.

Enough is Enough! This is war on in the seas! If it looks like a Pirate Ship, it if acts like a Pirate Ship, if it smells like a Pirate Ship.... BLOW IT OUT OF THE FREAKING WATER! Ever man woman and child on a Pirate Ship..... DESTROY IT AND THEM!

No arresting, no courts, just kill them, kill them all.

I am just sick over more loss of innocent lives because they were doing what they love doing.... boating!!!!

What? It is their fault they are dead? Really?

I don't know about the "kill and then ask questions later" approach, but yes they need to be taken out of operation.

The web site the owner's have documenting their quest is at http://www.svquest.com/ Nothing of recent events, last updated 12/21/2010, but man they had a great love of boating and the means to live out what most of us just dream of... may they rest in peace.

Agreed.. That being said, make sure you make smart decisions about where you sail. Aparently, they had been warned about the route that they had decided to take.
I do think we need to start "speaking" their language so to speak. We know where they call home. Evey time someone is hijacked, a smart bomb into their back yard will quickly make the profession of pirating too "expensive"- international law be damned!
