48 DA Owners Club

I shipped from Fla to NJ and had it shrink wrapped by guys who shrinkwrap heavy machinery. For me, it was worth it. You spend all this time finding a beautiful boat and then leave it to the road elements. That didn't make sense to me.
A lot of shippers will tell you not to shrink wrap as they don't want to be responsible if the shrinkwrap was to tear.
Remember, your boat will be shipped stern forward, with the cockpit exposed... all kinds of fun stuff will get in there. For me, it was a no brainer.
I'll dig up a pic and attach it. The quality of the wrap and the job will make the difference in the shrinkwrap lasting over a long haul.

Beautiful boat on a truck! I'm a 450DA driver who is transitioning into a 510DA driver in the next week. Problem is, I need to transport the new boat from Michigan to Stockton CA and I am new to this....I really would love to get recommendations as to who you used and what to expect to pay. I would have PM'd those of you who talked about your transportation experiences but Im not quite sure how to do that on this forum, my apologies in advance.

Any help is greatly appreciated (and needed). I need to put the boat on a truck within 2 weeks...

I have a macerator question for everyone. Can you run the discharge pump while on plane or do you have to be at idle speed for the pump to work properly? I rarely take many trips out in the ocean so I've always just relied on dockside pumpout. Any replies would be appreciated.

You can run wide open… Works better even. Just did it today running home from Bahamas

For the original halogens (dimmable) in the hardtop - has anyone found a plug and play replacement LED bulb they like that maintained the dimmability (is that a word?) of the OEM bulbs? I have tri-color lumitecs on a separate switch, but would love the additional light of the warm white ones, but in LED form. Thanks!

I used these from Marinebeam. They retain the dimmable feature.

If I recall correctly, they offer a 10% discount for the code SEARAY
If it doesn't work when you type it in, call them and they will apply it to the order.

Planning a trip in two weeks and I'm looking for some advice from you more experienced 48 travelers! I'm still getting familiar with the boat and developing my own fuel burn numbers based upon how I drive and where I drive, etc. And given the price of diesel these days, it behooves me to plan my fuel up stops judiciously. So, with that, the question is: How far do you travel in terms of miles before fuel gets to be a concern?

My early data which consists of the initial fuel up after we got the boat, and then one fuel up with documented miles traveled, has me at a burn rate of 0.64 mpg. Statute miles. I am considering one of two options for fuel management:

1. 193 Mile run--- 301 gallon fuel burn: 24.75% reserve
2. 225 Mile run--- 352 gallon fuel burn: 12.10% reserve

The 32 mile difference is in "protected" waters of the Elizabeth River/James River, which could be done at cocktail speed to enjoy the view of the Naval Base at Norfolk, if need be!

I appreciate and look forward to your comments and counsel.

To me it depends where I'm traveling. For example if I'm going to the Florida Keys there are so many locations to fuel I really don't concern myself above 75% empty. On the other hand going to the Bahamas I make sure there is enough fuel reserve to get to an alternate fueling location. I have in multiple occasions made the run from Cape Canaveral to Grand Bahama Cay to clear in and fuel and they were out of fuel then the decision to go South to West End or East to Spanish Cay; both a bit of a trek. If the crossing was glass I can easily make it on to Spanish and as another alternant Green Turtle but if the crossing was rough then I need to creep into West End.
I think the message is two fold - know your fuel burn in differing conditions and plan fuel location/alternants.

I replaced mine a few years back with these dual color (blue/cool white) LED bulbs. I really like them and they are dimmable.

Thank you both! And these work done with the stock dimmer at the helm? How do you alternate colors if there no ‘on/off’ just the slow dimming increase?
A quick off and on change the color. I have red/white/blue tricolor that are dimmable from the helm switch.

For me I would plan option 1 but if you get to your point of no return and conditions are good, computer shows plenty of range then I would go forward. Again it all depends on conditions and how much of a rush are you in. For me boating should not be a rush so stopping is just part of the adventure. I run heavy with the jet ski, 6 scuba tanks and 5-6 people and all the shit I carry. As that fuel and weight burns off the consumption goes down quite a bit and the speed picks up from what I have experienced.

anyone thinking about selling their 48DA? I never thought I would, but looking online they all seem to be well over $400k and there's very few out there. But what would I replace it with? just wondering if anyone was thinking like me.

I've been watching the 48s for sale. Not many around for sale and at one point 3/5 were pending. Mid 400s is the usual asking price.

I think we have all considered selling of course…. Issue is what do you replace it with. For me I had stupid offers coming in this summer but since I only had this boat for just over a year now and so much time into making how I want it I am just not ready to let it go. When I do next boat is 60+ and probably going to be different style and brand. Plus then there is the dock situation which presents a whole other set of issues I am just not ready to deal with now. I told a broker that walks my dock I drew a line in the sand you put $550 in my pocket and I walk away today less than that don’t call me. He came back with $500 and I asked him if he had a hearing issue. Probably stupid on my part but hey who cares… I love my boat…

Help I am in need of some expertise. Started my run home today and upon start up port exhaust was exiting thru bottom of boat with some flow thru side exhaust outlet. Checked flow from inlet and strainers. Checked impeller and looked good. Took out for a quick spin and seemed fine with normal operating Temp but still same issue. Any ideas?

I couldn’t agree more. love my 48 and do want to move up to a 60’ something but nothing out there affordable. Moving up also brings a whole different perspective of boating. Docking issues at the home marina, winterizing or go south, planning trips, etc etc. I had 3 very good offers this summer and said no thanks. I love my 48 and I have it in the condition I want it. I’m not ready to start over.

Replacing it is the issue. Not many boats tick the boxes like the 48 unless you move into a different stratosphere. Love this boat, and I’ve had a lot of boats.

I totally agree, the 48DA checks off just about every box except for cabin space, for a 48 the staterooms and heads are very small and there's minimal storage. The cockpit and aft area make up for most of this, but no boat is perfect.

I've also noticed my insurance on my 48DA has increased 20-30% every year for the past 3 years. It's getting a bit ridiculous, I'm with travelers now and haven't been able to find a lower premium, I've called around and the general consensus is that premiums on larger boats have increased disproportionally more than boats over 30ft or so. It starts to chisel away at the ownership experience when expenses go up like that every year. Anyone in the same boat? (excuse the pun, lol.)
