420 DA Thread

Sweater house, I tried to remove that exhaust pipe once to have better access to my port side alternator but it was a pain in the ass.
I loosened all the clamps and slid a long screwdriver between the rubber boot and the fiberglass pipe by the exhaust manifold then used some dish soap but still couldn't slide that rubber boot far enough up the pipe to get it off. After an hour I gave up.
good luck !

Yes that is my fear, that I spend 5 hours wrestling to save 4! I will probably try since it will make life so much more pleasant and I will likely do a better job with the painting.

I think the easiest way to remove the exhaust pipe is to take it apart at the turbo. When my port engine was rebuilt this year we removed the turbo at it was quite easy to take apart the exhaust. You will have a lot of leverage to twist the pipe from the rubber sleeve.

Have you done anything with the horrible DVD players that came from factory? I have 3 of those CyberHome DVD players and 2 dont work, and the other works once out of 10 attempts. They are cut right into the panel with no room to spare. I think it's 9" wide, and I cannot find a 9" wide DVD player anywhere online.

,,,We just got rid of the DVD's. We use a media player and a smart TV now. It's so easy with no cords, wires. Just a USB for movies. Or if you are lucky to have great wifi, which we don't, that would be even easier.

Talked with a Cummings Service tech that was on my boat today and I asked him about that exhaust pipe, he said that the rubber boots were glued to the fiberglass pipe. Very hard to remove and not worth taking the turbo apart... Was his comment.

Have a question... New to me 06 420/44da. We are on LOTO and spend most weekends rafted up with 2-3 other boats. Most of us have our gens running for AC. can't seem to keep cabin CO detector from going off after 2-3 hours. Have to open hatch and turn box fan on so that it's blowing up and out of the master berth hatch

im wanting to spend some nights on the hook this year but will definitely need the gen and AC

ANY HELP APPRECIATED

Might want to check and see when the last time the co detectors were last changed. They are a serviceable item. I replace mine every 5 years on boats.

Are you diesel and are the other boats you are rafted up to diesel?

gas not diesel replaced on of the detectors late last season. Still occurred. I was thinking about bringing a "home unit" in and plugging it into one of the 110 outlet for a comparison.

I had same issues. I bought 3 independent battery powered units and placed one in each cabin and one in the salon. The Sea Ray Fireboy units would go off but the home units never would. I have 2 new Fireboy's I'll be installing next time I'm up at the boat. Hope that solves the issue.

If they are going off CO is present at some level...their threshold may be lower than a home unit but any CO is too much CO in my opinion.

Usually as they age they get less sensitive.

I'd be very aware where everyone's Genny exaust is located.

Last weekend I was going through stuff on my boat and found a tarp that fits the back seat and only the back seat. It has all the loop bungee cords the main tarp uses and a few snaps below the cushions. I always thought the tarp was for the helm area and I do not need a tarp on the helm so I never looked closely at it.....When would anyone ever use a tarp like that? I am sure it is obvious but it did not make sense in my situation.

Wild guess - maybe to protect the back seat when fishing? I have seen many comments over time about how the Sundancer isn't very good for fishing (compared say to an Express or an Amberjack) since you will get blood, fish, etc on the seats in the cockpit.

I need to replace the hose from the aft head to the holding tank because its dry and cracking. Where it passes through the bulkhead between cabin and engine room its sealed up with some type of silicon. Any idea what type of sealant to use once I rip out the old hose? I have an email into Sea ray but haven't gotten a response yet.

I had my hoses changed a few years ago. They just used clear GE silicone. Was nothing special . I went with the WHITE sanitation hose. The fwd head was ***** !

Just saying

Rob

After I dug in I realized I was over complicating what they had done. I only did the aft head from inside cabin to tank, but it was enough of a pin for this go-around! The new hose is about 1/8" thicker than the old hose so I had to ream out the hole in the bulkhead, and re-epoxy the opening to seal up the wood.

Not looking forward to the other head, but so far that hose looks okay.

2 weeks to launch, realizing how big the boat is now that I have to polish and wax the hull! Seems relatively small out on water, but huge on land when standing on a ladder polishing for hours on end!

I did my own polishing and waxing on my 25' & 30' boats. I started on the 40' and got about 1/2 way around when I decided that this job would become someone else's headache. Haven't look back. Now I just arrive at the boat one day in spring and it's magically beautiful again. Money well spent!

In fact, it gets hauled, bottom painted and polished next Tuesday!

I just WASHED my 420 about 3 weeks ago (not waxed! I pay someone to do that) and told my wife afterward that this is it - can't go any bigger. I agree these are deceptively large boats when it's time to wash & wax them.

Hi everyone.....I just had some big maintenance done on my engines and generator. The heat exchangers and aftercoolers were disassembled and boiled. All parts were cleaned, prepped, greased and reinstalled. I have 458 hours on the engines and do most all boating in and around the coastal northeast. The aftercoolers and heat exchangers had some scaling and crud but nothing terrible. Impellers were replaced. At the same time I replaced all of the raw water hoses as many of them were cracked and deteriorated. It took about a week total and about 8K.
