420 DA Thread

I did my own polishing and waxing on my 25' & 30' boats. I started on the 40' and got about 1/2 way around when I decided that this job would become someone else's headache. Haven't look back. Now I just arrive at the boat one day in spring and it's magically beautiful again. Money well spent!

In fact, it gets hauled, bottom painted and polished next Tuesday!

Yes, this was the first and last year for DIY wax! My wife tried to convince me to let the yard do it but I thought it would be fine for me. Then I realized the last time I waxed a boat over 40' was when I was in college.

Guys ,
Just a heads up of an issue I had. I lost ENGINE SYNC, LOW ENGINE IDLE and CRUISE 1 & 2. MAke a long story short I had a broken wire in the main engine harness on port engine. Problem was in the first harness directly under the motor ( under the aftercooloer in that giant pile of zip tied wires ) . Talk about a needle in a haystack. So if anyone has this issue I can help u find it quick.

All the best

Rob

I have diagnosed and worked on numerous things over the years...I have never heard of a wire breaking in a harness.....Do you mean at a connecting point?? Could it have been damaged??? Corrosion possibly?????

Ash, looks like the wire was nicked. over 10 years salt water tooks its toll. ( might have been install issue ) U have to cut the wiring bundles open to find it . Look on the right side of either engine . right under the after cooler and you'll see all the bundles of wires and harness's

If any of you guys are on your boats in the next few days could you take a close up picture of the latch that holds the sliding portion of your companion way OPEN while underway? Maybe a couple of angles. I need to go online and try and source a replacement.

If you get it just PM me and I'll send you either a cell # or email number that you can forward it to.

Thanks!

I took a picture for you. I have no idea how to put it on this webpage. If you tell me your cell number I can text you the picture.

If you need any more pictures let me know. I'll be on our 420 this weekend.

FOUND IT! Thanks for the pictures. They sealed the deal.

Below is a link to it if someone else in the future is looking here to find one

I had the same issue with my 2007 340DA. I ended up putting a rubber seal around the hatch....worked well enough that when I got my 420DA I did the same thing. Haven't had a CO issue since and have rafted up with both diesel and gas boats.

Your forward master berth hatch?

I have a fender storage question. I have a friend with an '03 390 Motor Yacht. I noticed the last time we went out on it that he could store 3 large fenders in his bow chain locker. He said it never interferes with his anchor rode. I'd love to do this since I have to stuff 4 fenders in my transom locker, which is a PITA, and I'd like to carry at least a couple more. Anyone here tried it on the 420/44? I'd prefer not to have the rail racks as they restrict vision while underway and don't look to great IMO.

On my 44DA, I would store extra's in the bow locker. I once (and only once) had an issue with the line from the fender getting caught up in the chain as I lowered the anchor. After that I was careful to tie the line tight around the fender so it was not loose to interfere. I just bought my 48DA which has fender holders on the rails. I am taking them off this weekend as even without fenders in them, I found them very distracting while watching the water on the trip to bring her home. Good luck!

Thanks for the insight. And congratulations on your new AWESOME boat. I hope to hear your impressions of the upgrade after you've spent some time on it.

In 2 weeks of ownership I have logged 32 hours on engines and 5 nights sleep (for some people a season!). She is a big girl for sure - amazed that a boat that weighs in at 50% more has almost identical fuel burn and cruise / wot is within one knot. The increase in living area is amazing - every area I sit in (cockpit, saloon, master and aft staterooms) each feel 4 feet bigger on their own. Boat is an amazing use of space. I looked at many boats over many brands and feel there is no better layout in an express cruiser for a family. And most impt is it has all the things the admiral was missing from the 44!
