420 DA Thread

I also fought the windshield issue, but even worse since my isinglass was shot and leaked like a sieve onto the dashboard.

I also think it wicks through the canvas of the slant back. The canvas touches the top of the aft seat back cushion, or at least it did on mine, I would often notice a ton of water sitting under the aft cushions after a rain even though the cockpit itself was dry.

In the end the fix is easy, add a dry deck grid on the floor to keep items off the floor. You should anyway as any water you use to wash the cockpit goes through that area anyway.
Yes, mine runs like a river in heavy rain. Starboard worse than port. My guy recommended removing the windshield and re-caulking. No thanks.

I agree with that assessment. As to caulking, you could just do the outside, right? That would help a bunch. And you could do the inside at least a couple of feet forward of the "V".

For you guys that have put tender tie downs.... how in the world did you get back there to put backing plates on and washers and nuts. If I removed blower hoses and engine exhaust I still don’t think I would fit.
Are you guys cheating and screwing and glueing? I won’t tell...
Here is a pic of my locations the two pieces of blue tape. One is behind the genny .... the other is easier but not by much

All I remember is that it was super painful! Sort of laid down on my side on the angled portion of the underside of the platform and reached in the rest of the way.

Got my cockpit cushions back tonight. They look awesome. Can’t wait to see them in the daylight. Shout out to my friend Kevin from Cove Marine who really did great work. What a great guy to work with! Thanks again!
I’ll post one tomorrow when the sun is shining!!

That looks awesome! Did he do those on-board? Or does he have the templates and can ship to others with the same boat on the West Coast?

I have a question…..I think there are 3 fire extinguishers plus the auto in the bilge on the 420/44s. One under the edge of the front seat in the cockpit, one is in the port closet in the MSR, and if there is a 3rd, I cannot find it….can someone help me out???

Under the sink in the galley, I believe…

Ok, I have 2 fairly simple projects I keep kicking down the road..... 1. green electrical panel light(s) are so faint. 2. blue dash panel lights which at this point I cannot read anything on the dash panel without my phone to illuminate it. It is time to do these 2 jobs once and for all. Has anyone done either of these? I've sourced the lights and the strip lights. Admittedly I haven't investigated exactly how these jobs are done though.
2 questions:
-The green indicator lights, simply pull them straight out of the panel? The brass prongs make the connection or are they "wired" from behind?
-Is the dash panel blue strip light the 1,2,or 3 plug version on our boat?

Any of you guys who have experience with either or both of these jobs?...appreciate your insights.

Water heater is leaking.... according to spec sheet, it's an 11 gallon... anyone have experience in replacing? With what?

I wish there was a way to start separate post as to not hijack a recent post. Anyway we knew there was an issue when we purchased the boat so this is not a surprise, but our freezer won't get cold enough to freeze, barely gets as cold as a refrigerator. We are looking to do a fix or replacement, has any one installed a 2 drawer unit with a freezer and ice maker? Looks like the current freezer sits on a empty cabinet and possibly some room below it. Any thoughts on this type of unit? Is there a fix for the old unit we should try first. Thank you. JAM

Like JAM420SD, I, too, and looking to replace my cabin freezer. I have searched "freezer" on the thread, here is a summary of what I have found, but if anyone has more current or accurate info to add, please jump in.

Replacement options:
Dometic CRX-65. $590, but DC only (12 or 24V), and needs a "trim kit" which appears to be hard to find.
Dometic CRX-1065U/F. $900. Runs on either AC or DC. Unsure if this model needs a "trim kit"
Isotherm DR55 Drawer freezer $1892

Both Dometic models will function as a fridge, freezer, or both.

User Buyajet also mentioned using the Dometic CRX-50 (post #1381) as a freezer replacement. It is smaller than the 65, DC only, priced about the same at the 65.

RE the DC vs AC/DC operation, a while back, user Swaterhouse posted: "There is a AC to DC converter that the fridge connects to. The fridge runs off DC all the time, its the converter that switches between the two. When AC (110volt) is present it send 12v DC to fridge, when AC is not present it sends DC from batteries." From this, it appears that we should be able to purchase the less expensive DC only units, since there is a converter built into the boat upstream of them.

Any other options, or anything that I missed?

I just swapped mine for the CRX-1065U/F. It’s AC/DC, the trim kit is included (pre-installed), and it fit in the same hole with no cutting.

My only beef is when you run it in full freezer mode it doesn’t get cold enough for ‘hard’ frozen items such as ice cream. It’ll still freeze water, ice, etc. If you run it as a fridge/freezer, the smaller freezer compartment does hard freeze items.

Edit: The 1065 is both AC & DC just like the original unit. It has a standard cord & plug for the AC outlet under the counter, as well as DC leads. Once you crimp the appropriate connectors on the leads the 1065 operates just like the original. If AC is available it will use that. If AC power is disconnected, it will automatically switch assuming the DC switch is on at the main panel.

Probably would t be worth it. He has templates now. I would email him. He advertises here I believe. I’d hate to speak for him.

What model fridge are you running?

Not sure of the model number, but the PO of ours installed an Isotherm. It is taller/longer than what I see here, so likely the hole had to be cut, but it looks OEM with the flange. It is 12v/110v and I have been very impressed with how cold it gets. Dial has 0-7 and on 5 it goes to 0* and even on 12v will stay there. Never had a marine freezer that would keep ice cream hard, but this one will.
