420 DA Thread

Happy Thursday to you all! We want to update our cockpit table on our 420DA, and have been looking at Marine Teak (UK) for some options. Anyone else with a 420DA updated to a teak table through this site? The issue I think I have is that the pedestal is not centered between the seats (it is closer to the starboard side - about 18 inches from the edge of the seat/step part of the "U" shaped arrangement). Attached a picture. The image shows the table lengthwise from bow to stern, but we want to have it starboard to port (I know it turns). any suggestions/recommendations?

James,
This is the table I just purchased last year.

I used the existing pedestal mount and set the new table top on where I thought is felt comfortable and drilled holes. Not in the center but still sturdy enough.

I did the samething as far as mounting. i epoxy'd mine after not liking the teak oiled look and maintenance and stains from sweating cups.... It didn't work the epoxy pulled away from the wood in the sun... Looked good for a couple of days though

How much size difference is this table from that standard white plastic one?

It was a gorgeous day here so I broke out the buffer and got some waxing done. The marina where the boat is at really packs them in tightly. There were a few spots where I was wedged between the two boats and getting the buffer where I needed it was a pain. One side down, one to go. So happy to finally own the boat!

Many times questions are asked about various dimensions on our boats: Draft, lenght, beam, air draft, etc. The owners manual, as you may know, has a lot of that information, but not ALL of it. I called Sea Ray this morning and a very helpful gentleman sent me the "shipping dimension" drawing for the 420 with Hardtop. I thought others might find it useful, too.

Hello all, I hope everyone is handling WINTER well - not so much here in KY....

So I am going to ask this question again for any 420 gassers.. mine is an '05 with 8.1 and with the fresh water tank empty and 1/2 fuel she sits bow down slightly. I have full 200ft of chain anchor rode and I have removed all of it to see how much difference that makes. It does HELP but she still is not level at the water line.

So.. does anyone else have this issue?? I dont have water in the bow and nothing is wet, i have used a moisture meter. I dont really want to add ballast in the tansom but I really want her to sit level. Any thoughts??
Thanks
Chris

@kysearay - Do you have a generator? I noticed when mine was out recently for replacement the boat listed.

Thanks, Yes I do and it is on the Port side and I am not LISTING, she has a BOW down attitude.

I have two friends with the same hull (both 44's) but are diesels and they sit perfectly level at the water line. My trim tabs are almost at the water line. Underway she runs very well, i just cant figure it out...

The main dfference would be the weight of diesels and transmissions compared to the gas combination. If you can figure out both weights that might give you the answer.

Chris,

We had a 44' gasser in our marina for a couple of years that had a slight bow down/stern high attitude that sounds similar to what you're describing that I saw up close frequently. I've also seen quite few 40'-44' Sea Ray's in our area of different generations, and if they're gassers without full fuel tanks the bow down attitude is much more pronounced. You may not want to add weight in the stern, but I'd bet if you figured out the difference in weight between your gassers, and the diesel option and added that amount of weight to your stern the problem you're experiencing would go away.

Yep, just hate to add ballast but guess there is no other option at this point - just curious if any other gassers have experienced the same. Thanks for the comments.

Tom,
Thank you very much, i really appreciate you taking the time to respond - that is exactly what I was thinking to do and I appreciate your insight. Battery boxes with lead shot and epoxy should do the trick.
Thanks
c

Seems to be about 1,690 lbs difference with velvet drives - thats alot of shot!!!

Anytime Chris, and great looking boat BTW. Please remember any potential weight differential of the generator as well in your calculation. Best wishes.

Thanks and yes I will. I was really surprised at the engine weight difference alone. I knew that diesel blocks are heavier, but not as much of a vast difference to the 496 gas block. As for the Gen I'll check into that. thanks

Remember too that adding weight in the stern will make it harder to get that stern out of the water when cruising which will affect performance
You may want to try incremental changes.
Maybe use passengers for ballast on a couple of test runs to see if you can strike a balance.
While my diesel 410 sits perfectly in the water at the dock, it always appears to be riding bow high when on plane.
Appearances can be deceiving.
I’ve found that I can actually get the bow down perfectly from a performance standpoint without full tab and adding more tab only stuffs it and slows the boat down.
In fact, the boat seems to perform even better with less fresh water in the tank up by the bow.
But, because of the added weight of the diesels the stern doesn’t seem to lift high enough out of the water.
In other words, even when trimmed for current max performance it still seems to be dragging it’s ass through the water.
After running the boat for three season I feel that if I could get that stern up more it would really boost fuel and speed numbers.
I’m not a boat engineer or anything but my feeling is the less boat in the water when on plane, the better the performance numbers.
On a side note:
After discussing this with a friend, who until last season had a 2005 diesel 420, riding on that boat, and him running the 410, we came to the unscientific conclusion that diesel versions of both boats had similar characteristics on plane.
The difference is that the design of the 420 has the bow itself sloping downwards the further forward you look which gives the appearance of the bow riding lower and makes it easier to see over than in my 410.

Thanks alot,
Yes I completely agree and when she is up on plane she runs AWESOME! Really the main issue that I have is an OCD for her to sit level. The swim platform is very high above the water line and is really noticeable when i raft up with my buddies and their diesel 420/44. I do agree that the 420 "slopes" as you move to the bow and I really have always liked that classic Sea Ray look.
I think I will try full tanks and 500-750 lbs of weight along with switching out my chain rode to a mix of chain and nylon - we dont really need full chain on the Ohio River and will safe some wear and tear on the windless.
Again, thanks for the feedback.
