420 DA Thread

Noob question. At the end of the day when we leave our boat, we turn off most everything on the panels, including the Port Systems and Starboard Systems (identified in the attached pic). Can anyone share what this relates to on a 420DA? We also turn off the solenoids.

I go to Louisville a lot and always wondered what the boating would be like...Where do you go and do?

Hey there, we have some really nice boating in the summer months - especially if we are lucky enough to get a slight drought, wink wink. There are a couple of sand coves thanks to Nugent Sand co that are 60+ deep and very clear along with 3 large islands that we beach and hang out on. Along with a couple of nice river restaurants and downtown Louisville has some transient slips to check out the city. Even though we only can go "up" and "down" the river its still alot of fun.
give me a shout when you head this way!!

Question about shore power!
About a month from now (weather permitting) I will be taking my first journey to bring our new to us boat to its new home. Last year our marina installed new docks and shore power pedestals with GFCI breakers. About 75% of the boats (including my previous boat) needed some kind of work to keep from tripping the breakers on the dock. Has anyone else had this experience with the 44/420?

So we have not done this as its so costly, but we did have a stray current test done at my marina and talked with the marine electrician about boats that were "leaking" greater than 1 amp, which he stated could be lethal. He told us that the new industry standard is to have GFCI breakers on the pedestals and stray current at or above 30 milliamps will trip the breaker!!! So basically there is stray current from the boat into the marina Leaking - rudder, shafts, grounds etc. that will have to be found and fixed. YIKES.

I have been to at least two marinas that had new electric with GFCI with no problems, one of them I was with another member who has a 2005 420 and he was fine as well.

Does anyone know the part # on the Saniguard Holding tank filter? Looking to find out if it is a 3/4" or 5/8" and I don't want to have to R/R twice since I am lazy. Anyone try the Volker unit? Of course the SR parts manual is useless. Thanks in advance.

Save yourself some money and make your own. Take the old filter off, cut it in half, buy aquarium activated charcoal for <$10, buy a PVC Threaded Coupler (male and female) and refill your own. You need to take some measurements as the threaded coupler adds a bit of length, and you don't want to mess with the exisiting hoses. It also has to fit inside the moulded surfaces on the black water tank with room for the hold down strap. The picture is from the original. The label just peels off exposing PVC pipe.

Pretty easy project.

You and villain along with so many others make this forum great. Thanks!!

Just a word of caution to those who haven’t replaced the thermostat on your generator. Mine stuck, caused heat to peg +240, genset DID NOT shut itself down, cracked the manifold. My tech said the only reason it may NOT have shut down is because it would stick, then unstick, then stick. His opinion but he is a master Cummins and Onan/Westerbeke fellow with 30 years in this space and specializes in 40’ + Sea Rays. 9 hours labor plus $950 for the manifold and $30 for the thermostat just added to the joy of ownership. $30 would have prevented this.

We installed our new cockpit table yesterday. It is from Marine Teak (UK) - can't complain about them at all, ordered on March 5, delivered March 9!

We did apply teak sealer on it (we applied it after we got it), and boy did it bring out the look of the wood.

Topic: Refrigerator/freezer

Two questions relating to this. When we leave the boat, we leave the "Refrigerator/Freezer" breakers turned "on" on the panel for both the AC and DC. The boat is on shore power. It seems both turn off until we get back and turn all the other items on. It seems that it runs when DC power is on, but not when AC power is on. Not sure if this makes sense, but wanted to put this out there in case there is something obvious we are missing before we start looking at replacing the fridge/freezer. Note, when it is working, it works well.

Second question. The fridge bulb has blown and I need to replace it (pic attached). I've found this exact bulb online, but does anyone know if there is an LED version of this bulb that I can use?

That is very nice. I like the flip panel to allow you to use the side step at the dock.
Yes, that is one of the reasons we wanted this style. It also allowed us to get a little bigger table to the standard fiber glass one on the boat.
