410DA Purchase

Alex:
I agree...kind of like a rebound relationship.....I'm not going to jump without first checking the water...(learned that one Scuba diving)....anyway, I am more concerned right now with the salesman's "eagerness"....I would think that he would be the one to be anxious to get me into a deal.....but his assertiveness kind of has me wondering... :smt017 ...probably if he were too pushie I would be posting about that ......oh well...at this point I'm really just looking for a return phone call....From Monday...and today is Thursday.....

I thought that trading-in my current boat was going to make this easier....I may have to re-think that stategy and consider marketing my boat and then looking to buy after it is sold......

Nice shining Searay!!

I know how you feel in this stage of the deal....

It's almost impossible to think about something else and to keep your vision clear.

But things have to go as they go, and I know you get this nice boat!

I follow your story.

Good luck.

Peter.

This is the same what Alex say's

Peter

ps any info of this "new"boat age engine?

The salesman finally got back to me at lunch time today....I think I may have to start looking for a new salesman.....He called me on Monday to tell me about a 2000 460DA...that's right 460DA, soft top, hydraulic lift, bow thruster, cherry interior, Cummins diesels.......I wasn't sure about going that big, but after two phone conversations with him, I told him "..OK, let's go for it... I'm interested.....get me the particulars.."....well, I've spent the last three days day dreaming about the 460....all the time thinking " I may have just bought a 460....COOL... " ....the original price he quoted was also right in line with my budget...I got the " Go for it NOW ..."....from Fank W via email....Heck...just to Trump Frank W....I even got the OK from the admiral.....well, three days later the salesman calls me back and says, "I wasn't sure you really wanted the 460 and somebody else put a binder on it.....how about a NEW 44DA..." For the life of me I can't understand how the salesman would not be sure I wanted the 460 but thought I might be interested in a NEW 44.... :smt017 .....I think the salesman just 'took a nap' and another salesman, ' on the ball' got his client to ..." Go for the 460..."

Last conversation I had with the salesman I gave him direction to go find me a 2003 420DA with a white hull that I can trade in my 380DA for.........Skip....you trading-in anytime soon...

I think marketing my own boat is becoming more and more like a reality....then I would be able to shop ALL boats that are for sale, NOT just those that are traded-in.....

Dominic,

I strongly believe the best purchase deals are in brokerage. I think the best way to proceed is:

1. Market your boat through a broker. Don't open end the listing contract. Give him a reasonable amount of time to move your boat but not forever. Price the boat a wee bit high when compared to comparable outfitted boats be prepared to drop the price until you see some activity. I would not negotiate the brokerage fee at this time. Wait until you get close on a deal then watch the broker eat some commission to close the deal.

2. Get your broker to quote wholesaling out your boat. This is the price you will receive if they sell your boat tomorrow to a wholesaler. This information is valuable:
a. It provides a fall back position / value to use if you find your dream boat.
b. It is the real price MM is paying you on any trade.
c. Some brokers will do a "Trade In" using wholesale and some transaction fee allowing you to minimize your sales tax.

3. Have your broker start looking for the killer deal. They are out there. You just have to be patient.

I have had very good luck with MM brokerage but there are lots of brokers out there.

Dominic,
Some additional thoughts regarding the deal that was pulled out from under you. This happened to me. The sales offices are quite predatory. Clean used boats move quick. Most salesmen have a list of customers looking for boats. The sales manager might have stepped in and approved a "sure thing" deal over a binder with a promise to look. The sales manager might have told your salesman "no more capping boats unless you have a deal". The bottom line is you have to be quick. We had a 03 420DA sold out from under us on the way up the ramp to process our credit card. Another Salesman sized us up, decided we were serious and called his client locking up the deal before we could make a move. Good luck and have some fun with the process. I think it is fun buying a boat as long as you let the deal come to you.

I've always thought the best time to buy a boat is during a recession or when the country is in a funk over energy or some other national issue. When people are feeling less confident, the prices are usually soft. Right now consumer confidence is quite high; unemployment is low and the economy is growing. This too shall pass.

The problem with waiting for the best time to buy is that most are usually sellers at the same time also...and vice versa....

Dominic,
Shoot me an e-mail...address is in my profile. I'd like to share some perspective on our 420DA deal this past April and how it came to pass.
Hang in there.

Similar thing happened when we bought our 340. Two buyers had made offers, one couldn't come up with the down money and the other could not get financing worked out. After two weeks of waiting we were third in line and bought $4,500 under listing price, which was a steal!

No real news....I did however take a few steps on the "other" side....No NO not a blow boat, but we did look at other brands.....(I'll stay late after Sunday Mass today and kneel on my hands for an hour)....anyway....looked at a 42' Regal....41' Forumula PC and a 42' Cruisers....Just to keep my options open.. I don't, and I won't, bash other brands (other than sailboats of course... )...All of the boats listed above are great boats for the right person......Anyway....I am please to say.... from a personal preference point of view, both my wife and I are Sea Ray type of folks....and our next boat will be a Sea Ray.....

Dominac, Hang in there on your search for the right boat. Also I have learned that the other deal on the 460 "aint over - till it's over". I find it amazing how many of these "deal-pending" boat listings pop up again. Some times it even works to your benefit. I know you have been looking at 410-420's but we love our 460 and I know there are a lot of them out their. I get updates from Yachtworld e-mailed to me weekly with new listings or price reductions. As written here many times by Frank W. "get the biggest boat you can wrap your wallet around if you "think" you may want a larger boat". The 460 is a big boat and heh-you already got the admiral's OK!

I know it sounds strange... but what you had experienced now is good for your future buying mentality.

You can have a more objective look in future deals.

And shopping is also fun! don't forget that.

Succes Peter

Status: Deal Pending .....

So indeed not closed! Hang in there Dom and have fun with the shopping!

Succes! Peter
