410DA Purchase

well knock me down....I just got a phone call from the saleman....apparently they moved the boat yesterday from Port Washington to Liberty Landing.....good thing...because we're in the middle of GALE FORCE WINDS....gust to 60 mph....anyway...I'm going to FINALLY see the boat tomorrow morning...... :smt038

Dave...I agree that I'm t not taking a big jump..size wise....but for now...just going to diesel is a big jump....not in size....but in my "journey"...I'm going to have to get use to whole new world of maintenance.......plus...it gives me something to look forward to in a few years....

Dominic,

I think that you are going to be thrilled with diesel power. We love the 420, and the diesels really make the boat for me. The 420 is easier to handle in close quarters than the 320 was, cruises nicely at 24.5 knots turning 2100 RPMs (with a WOT 0f 2600) and is economical for her size and weight. As to maintenance, with the exception of the generator RACOR filter, everything else is fairly easy to get to. I hvae seen 03 420s with Cummins 450s for under 300K, so do not discount this model/year if one comes available. I think Red Line Marine in Oceanport has a 420 now for around 290K with Cummins Power:

We also really appreciate the tremendous utility of the diesel genset. The 9KW Onan in my boat is powered by a 1.1 Liter 3 cylinder Kubota that powers every system on the boat without strain, turning 1800 RPMs, and using a relatively miserly 1GPH. Quiet, reliable power.

Best of luck. You will absolutely not regret the move to diesels. I've put 140 hours on my 420 in 6 months and were it not for the wind and rain today I'd be out running her some more.

regards
Skip

Dominic,

Heres an observation on maintenance, diesel vs gas: with diesels there is less of it, it is easier to do, it is different for some specific reasons which you need to understand, and I think it is cheaper. I've even taught journalism majors to handle the care and feeding of diesels.

There is a learning curve, but its a short, steep one that is easy to handle via email........ask Skip!

Skip makes my earlier point ... for the money the 420 at Redline for $290K is in my opinion a much better deal than the 410 you are looking at for $300+K ... of course condition plays a role, but at this difference I would not hesitate to spend a couple of weeks and a couple thousand dollars to bring her up to snuff like skip and I did. In the ned and after investing the labor, you are much better off ...

Alex has spoken....kill the deal.

I think I need to clear things up a bit.....the link to the 2003 410DA I posted earlier was Dreamcatcher/Sea Gull's old boat....I had a binder on that boat without knowing anything about the price or boat.....I agree with all the post here that for that Price I could get into a newer style 2003 420DA....which is why I got out of that deal when the numbers came out....I would have loved that boat, but the numbers just weren't there.....two weeks later, I put a binder on the boat I am looking at tomorrow....this boat is a 2000 410DA...it isn't listed on the MM or Yachtworld sites yet....anyway...the 2000 price I was quoted is $227,500.....as compared to the 2003 which is $325,000.....for that kind of money I can deal with the same boat three years older....that is of course...if it is in well maintained condition....THAT I should have a good idea about by tomorrow afternoon......as for the Red Lion boats, I have been in touch with "Charlie"...I will reserve my comments.....but some of his boats do deserve a look-see.....

later,

Dom,
Between Frank and I we can set you in the right direction. He has alot more experience with Cat than I do. If you go thru with the deal we'll get you up to speed Cat, Cummins or Yanmar

Alex has spoken....kill the deal.[/quote] Dominic, I hope you know my reply was sarcasm. The 410 is a amazing boat even if Alex doesn't like it. I wish you luck in your deal and hopefully we will see each other on the water this summer.

Makes sense to me ... a 2000 410 diesel in good condtion around 227,500 seems good/in the ballpark.
Anxious to hear how your visit went ... hope it's all you are expecting

Hey Pat ... whena re you gonna put a yanmar into that truck of yours !!!

Dominic,

Just catching up on the thread today. In answer to your question, MM did not ask me to show the boat before the trade date.

Also, they may be asking 325 for the boat, but they know that it's only worth 285 max. Don't be scared by high asking prices - there is a lot of play in the market.

Well.....just got back from seeing the 2000 410DA...suggestion to admin.....we need a thumbs down avatar.....

First impression as I pulled up with the car and I can see the boat at the dock....HMMM...looks pretty good.....not happy about the Viking life raft bolted to the swim platform....but heck...I saw it in the photos and it is included in the sale...It can be removed.....canvas is new....glass is new....and the gelcoat has a nice shine to it....so far so good....

My wife and another couple that came with us walk down the ramp and get ready to board her....as soon as we step under the cavas....the second impression COMPLETELY overwhelms the first....ODOR...and not just diesel here....head odor....or something....carpets ripped.....vinyl ripped....the top of the helm chair is hanging off and the carpets are torn and F-I-L-T-H-Y.....also...the new canvas...definetly NOT sunbrellla...some very light weight cheapy stuff....from pre-reading the survey I also know that the cockpit freezer is broke and the windshield vent doesn't open....the raytheon vhf won't power up...... a Northstar chartplotter was added on top of the dash, and ICOM VHF was bolted to the knee area........ and the remaining electronics are dated. Some of the gauges are fogged and there is no dash canvas cover....also...NO engine synchronizer.....By now my wife and the other couple are already hoping that I just say thanks, but no thanks and that we leave and go out for a nice Sunday diner....In my head I'm thinking...Oh well...I may get some extra $$ out of the deal.... nothing here that can't be fixed.....yet....

We go down below....the stink follows us....the mess gets worse....half of the carpet was torn up and cheap pergo floring added around the galley area....and it is buckling...the remaining rugs are TRASHED.....pen marks on the salon couch....cabinet doors hanging...hinges loose....the TV over the fridge was removed and a big hole was left behind....an LCD TV was added over the salon mirror...and not done very well.....I look at the salesman and say...." you know this deal is dead.....don't you...." he apologizes....In his defense...it was the first time he saw the boat also.....I continue with looking over the boat with my wife...as she is greatly relieved that I was NOT going thru with the deal.....and saved her from being the bad guy.....

We stayed on the boat another 15minutes just going over the layout of the 410DA and making sure that my wife liked the layout...on this model i was suprised that the master stateroom did not have a pocket door...that must have come by later....with a regular hinged door, entrance into and out of the master is awkward...in fact...you have open the door...enter the room....and then close the door in order to climb onto the bed from starboard.....

also...my 380DA has more hanging closests as the mid cabin of the 410DA has none and the midcabin of the 380DA has FULL length closet....the second head takes up a lot of room.....also...the galley on my 380DA has on extra very large cabinet on the top-forward end of the galley....I guess I could just use the BIG hole left where the TV was.....

I did go into the engine compartment....and it didn't seem bad....a little greasy...a little rust here and there...but relative to the rest of the boat....not bad.....

Now...right next to the 410DA was a 2007 44DA....we went on board and we all went ......WOW... ....that is a nice boat......value priced at a mere $583K....more than twice the 410DA......I let everyone know that they were sitting on my next to my next boat......

Sooooo....I guess it's back to the drawing board.....

Peter:
The boat you posted is local to me, however, it is a brokerage boat and I can't trade my current boat in on a deal....

Sea Gull:
I agree that it is only an asking price....I did tell the salesman that I am still interested in your old boat, however I let him know that he has to find another $50k somewhere and then we will have a deal......

a little disheartened but not broken,

Sorry to hear man ... :smt089

But you'll find what you're looking for soon!! I am sure

Told 'ya that the layout of the 410 is a little different. Squeezing that head in there had to cause some compromises in the mid cabin area amd elsewhere. I always thought that the old 400 had a better layout and mid cabin than the 410, but that is purely taste on my part ... Nevertheless the 410 is a great boat and I wish I had one ... there is one for sale five slips down from mine ... unfortunately a gasser ... :smt009

Ok Dom sorry to hear,

But there are a lot of boats now, just as Frank says so....
Maybe you only have to go a little further away.

Success next time: thumbsup: or down?! :smt017

Peter.

I got a call from the salesman on Monday about another boat that may have been traded in at the Ft. Lauderdale show....and the boat is in the NJ area....great... I asked that he get me more info like, hours, Price, when I can see it, etc, etc....

On Tuesday, I call and leave a message on his cell phone to get back to me.....no return

On Wednesday, I call the MM Office...and find out he is off on Wednesday and Thursday....

I'm not a salseman, but I would think that your cell phone office should NEVER be off.......!!!!

Is it time to go to the Manager......I'd hate to ruin the relationship but I would like to keep the ball rolling....

Ok Dom,

Nice that maybe there is another boat.

Do you also not know the year, engine type brand etc.?

I think there is no problem that if you not can reach the salesman you contact the manager about more info.

Peter

DOm ... you're in a dangerous spot now ... you just went off a deal that turned sour and it's a let down. I have a few times in the past made the mistake to jump on the next best deal (in my *much* younger days) because I was so frustrated that all that anticipation and hope on the first one was disappointed. Don't make my mistakes, especially on an item like a large cruiser! Take your time and make sure you find what you really want. Everytime I did this in the past I came out with a worse deal than what I could have done if I would have kept my head on straight. You gotta get out of this emotional phase before you get serious about the next boat.
