340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Bill

Per my survey, the props are Nibral 18 x 22 with a medium cup.

Holy Cow. Thanks Robf for reminding me I can go look at my survey. I didn;t even think about that. So I went to look it up and sure enough, my props are 18 x 17.5 for whatever crazy reason. That does not seem like factory props. Somewhere the prev owner had them changed. Thats is certainly my whole problem. It comes out this week for a new bottom job and new props...

Ahoy fellow 340 owners! We moved up to a 2001 this spring from a older SR245. These are perfect cruisers for couples, plenty of room for entertaining dockside as well. Looking for fellow 340'rs that cruise the eastern basin of Lake Erie.

They are very nice boats... Enjoy you new boat... I hope we have a good 2014 season with low gas prices and calm warm waters...

I second the motion.......

Does anyone know where to get the sleeper cushion for the Salon sleeper set up for a 1999-2003 340 SD?

Any ever order a matress for their boat or have a template?

A friend at the marina recently had a custom mattress made for a 380 and used http://www.comfortcustombedding.com. I laid down on it and have to say it is light years better than the SeaRay factory mattress that we have on our 340. They paid about $2000.

The wife added memory foam on top of our mattress and that was an improvement. I guess that if we spent more nights on the boat than we do, I could justify the 2 grand upgrade but for now, the memory foam will have to do.

I did read that by adding just 2" to 3" of foam makes a huge improvement to the factory mattress and is preferred over memory foam. The 340 is so popular that I'm sure all the aftermarket mattress manufactures already have a template.

If you buy a queen solid foam matress you can cut it with an electric bread knife and glue the piece you cut off to match the form of the "v" berth matress... I have not done this, but others with 340s have... we use the topper technique...

I bought a king foam 4" topper, laid my 340's mattress on top of it upside down, and cut the memory foam using the same angles (extended) that the mattress has to conform with the hull shape. I actually had to trim it slightly to fit on top of the 410's mattress...

This happens to mine as well at times when I'm not running the boat for a couple weeks, I unplug from fuse and wait ten minutes and it comes back around. Sorry I didn't see your post earlier

I have a 2" foam topper, its OK but spending every weekend on the boat in season, just wanted sonething better.

Thanks all

I need some help. I have found a 2004 340 that I am interested in buying. She has had one owner - and appears to have been cared for very well.

However, on our sea trial she would not even get to 20 mph, with the starboard engine topping out at 4400 rpm and the port only reached 4000.

The fuel in the boat is over 18 months old, and the tank was close to empty. Could old fuel alone have caused this?

Thanks

What engines? V-drive or I/O? 3 or 4 blade props? clean or nasty bottom? Your right that seems slow regardless but there are many factors to consider. Worst case, I think that even with the smaller engines you should have seen middle 20's. My guess is it has the small block engines. If it has 8.1's, it has problems. Yes gas can be a factor but at 4000 RPM with a 4 blade prop and smaller engines I would have thought at least 24 mph. Compression test is a must. Fresh fuel may make a difference. I would be concerned about condensation in the tanks if the boat has been stored with near empty tanks.

Was the sea trail being done during a survey? If not, SURVEY!!! Great boat! I would think twice about buying anything without large block engines for use in the SF Bay Area.

I have an 2004 340 with 8.1's, and at 4000 rpm's I'm doing about 30mph if I remember correctly (boats up for the winter). And that's not WOT.

Same here, WOT will get me right at 40mph on flat water.

Nevin, have the bottom scraped and change the spark plugs too that should bring her back up to speed, unless, you do actually have a fuel issue.

Welcome to the forum...

I recently purchased a 2006 340 in SF. It is a great boat for the bay if this is what you eventually choose. You won't be disappointed.

That being said, I get around 35mph at the RPM you stated, faster at WOT (mine has the 8.1L V-Drives). I had an engine survey done by a mechanic and a hull survey done on the boat, I think both of these are a must-do. Send me a PM if you are interested in some recommendations, the mechanic I used was excellent, however, I cannot say the same about my first hull surveyor...I needed a second opinion.

As was previously stated, check the props and the growth if any on the bottom. There are a few possible salt water engine issues that I came across which may be causing your lack of RPMs. The fuel module on these engines can become corroded and not feed the injectors properly.... or worse, actually clog them. This would be something to cover in the survey and negotiate if necessary. $1000 per engine after parts/labor for just the fuel module. Injectors $200x16. On a side note, the same issue can happen with the generator so be sure to check that. Nothing that is a deal breaker... I'd put the repairs in the general maintenance category but something I wish I was aware of ahead of time.

I've found this forum extremely helpful during the purchase process and in my first few months of ownership.

Let me know if you have any questions. Good Luck.

I have a 2006 340 with the Mercruiser 8.1 V-Drives. Here are some things I have experienced.

1. Check the pitch on the props. These boats should have about a 22-23 inch pitch. Mine originally had a 17.5 and I could not get above 30 at WOT. I changed to 20 and brought my top speed to 37 but should have gone higher.

2. The port engine actually spins in reverse from a transmission standpoint. Not sure if this is true or not but I was told that the port will have a lower RPM naturally because of that. Could be just an excuse but it sounded logical.

3. Yes, old fuel can cause problems. The injectors get clogged as do the fuel filters. If your prop pitch is anywhere between 21-23, then I would look at fuel filters and cleaning injectors.

Hello fellow 340r's - has anyone put together a comprehensive maintenance matrix for all components and systems on the boat (either by hours or by season or both) and would be willing to share?
