340 SUNDANCER THREAD

I used lockview marina to ship my 340 from MD to Upstate NY. They have the low boy trailer so no need to take down the radar arch. Quality place and everything went smoothly.

I left the water heater switch on with shore power. I came back to an empty water tank. Have I damaged anything?

ianlockwood - I have had the same problem since last season, and although it hasn't really bothered me to date, I'd welcome hearing anyone's suggestions on how to fix a non-functioning speedo. The funny thing is it works sporadically (althought mostly not at all)..which suggests a blockage to me. I'd like to hear any responses you get. Thanks for posting.
The speedometer and the SmartCraft speed display have stopped working. I did some research and apparently this could be caused by a blockage in the speed transducer.
I read an article that says you can remove this while still in the water (it is a through hull fitting) and replace it with the plug that is supplied while you clean or replace it.
On my boat the transducer is located behind the port engine and looks almost impossible to reach. Has anyone attempted this and if so any suggestions. Is there anything else I should check first?

You can dive under the boat and spin/clean the wheel from beneath the boat. It probably gets blocked by weeds or growth occasionally.

cleaning out my shed and found my original 340DA windows. I had what they called the hardtop version and it took 5 panels. I used the center one but have the other 4 ill give away. Great for winter panels or if you replace the glass they will be like brand new. Just pay the shipping which will be about 20.00 i imagine. PM or email me. Louis

glad to report that leaving the water heater switch on with an empty tank of water doesn't appear to have caused any damage. One would hope that sea ray would anticipate my stupidity.

Two Screws Loose is out of the water and getting her rebuilt engine this week. Finally, after 8 months on island time (Ted's Machine Shop told me two weeks and it ended up being two months) I will hopefully have two working engines.

We are fixing a number of things and putting in a fresh water wash out for the engines. new bottom paint, new boot striping, bilge pump float switches, generator capacitors for the A/C and bow plane repairs.

Does anyone have a schedule of preventative maintenance that should be followed? Now that we have this "do-over" to address all of the prior owner's deferred maintenance, I would like to keep her ship shape.

Ok, here is a question for the mechanics that read this forum... I have an 06 340 with 6.2L Vdrives. When I'm cruising, there appears to be exhaust coming from the sides of the boat, but I thought that when you were underway at cruising speed that the exhaust changed to underwater mode. Am I mistaken? How can I tell if the underwater exhaust system is working correctly? Thanks for the help. This forum has been a great help in getting things working right in my boat.

I have had two sea rays with under water exhaust, and have always had some water and steam come out the the side exhuast. If you have no probles with reaching your top RPMS and speed, I would not look for a problem with your under water exhausts...

Rod is correct. While the boat is underway, a low pressure area is created at the exhaust outlet, so the majority of the exhaust flow exits underwater. However, some also still comes out the sides. If you were to cut open the water lift muffler, you would see that the system has no moving parts, so there is really nothing there to break. The larger exhaust tube (the one connecting to the underwater exhaust) extends into the muffler quite deeply, and no exhaust exits through this tube until substantial exhaust flow, and boat movement, are initiated. At all times, however, the smaller exhaust outlet is open and flowing, so what you see is normal.

Hi folks. Just purchased a 2003 340!! Looking forward to enjoying the boat. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get carpet runners.
Thanks,
Mark

Great Lakes Canvas made the oringal carpet runners... They are a CSR sponsor, and give use a discount at times... Ask for a CSR discount...

Thanks, Rod and Dale. Like I said, this site has been an amazing resource. I appreciate those of you that have the knowledge. I hope I can pass it on someday.

I recaulked both skylights, but still have damp carpet. I now think it may be caused when I fill the fresh water tank (seems to coincide with that event now that I'm paying attention). Any ideas where the fill hose runs? I know the water tank is in the center of the aft berth bench seat, but I don't know where the fill line or vent line runs.

Well looks like my suspicion is correct... it coincides with filling the water tank. I have yet to open the aft bench seat, but a friend that works on Sea Rays told me that it was probably a leak where the fill line connects to the tank (he has apparently seen this issue before). Although the fill line doesn't go by the point where the deck is the most wet, he said it is the low point a possibly the only point that the water has to escape. I have a feeling there will be a lot of clean up to do when I open that cover and check out the fill line if he is correct. Any suggestions for cleaning products since I won't be able to reach everywhere that the water has been sitting?

There is an elbow on the top of the tank - that's where my leak was when I took delivery of my 340. Agree - the mechanic said it is a "common" problem.

Take the rear bunk apart, remove the 7 or so screws holding the plywood base on, and there is your FW tank - the elbow in question is on the boat's port side.

Hello rknecht and masterfab. I would like to ask a question reference your comment below. I do have problems reaching my max speed. Not RPM's tho. I have an 06 340 with twin 8.1S v drives. I can hit 4900 RPM's according to my smart craft. But I start to fall off plane at 3800 RPM's and I can only top out at 30mph. The bottom is clean. Could this be related to exhaust issues?

Also are you using your trim tabs properly, probably not the cause, but they do add a few mph when trimmed properly.
