340 SUNDANCER THREAD

George ... I goggled Bodkin Creek, Chesapeake Bay and my friend; you are in beautiful boating country.
When time permits, I would be interested in hearing about your boating adventures. Do you get out on to the Atlantic or do you take advantage of the Bay? Is there a lot of boating traffic, good anchorages etc.?
Brian

Good day to you all,
Pardon me for intruding, but I would appreciate some of your time and expertise? I am a boater from Ottawa, Canada, For the last 5 seasons we have enjoyed boating down the Rideau Canal, down the St. Laurence as far as Québec City and down the Richelieu River to the end of Champlain Lake. Our last trip we trucked the boat to Georgian Bay and boated down the Trent-Severn to Bay of Quinte to Kingston, up the Rideau Canal and home to Ottawa. We sold our boat in the Fall (28' Bayliner 1988 starter boat). We have done our homework and have finally decided on upgrading to a 340 Sea Ray Sundancer 2003.
This weekend we are going to view a 340 Sea Ray with possibly the intent of purchasing it. It has 200 hrs, 8.1L Horizon, 740hp, V Drive, Raymarine SL70C Radar, Raymarine LT70 GPS chart plotter, systems monitor, 5kw Kohler gen, teak floor inside and on platform etc... He is asking $125,000.00 CA.
Questions:
In your opinion is this a good price, should I try to bring down the price and if so by how much?
On my visit to view the boat is there anything I should be looking for in particular on or about the boat?
If the boat is satisfactory I intend to have a survey done on the boat and a mechanical inspection during or after the boat trial. I would be greatly appreciated any other tips or advice you may have.
I thank you all for your assistance in advance and wish you all a great boating season.

Enos … we sold our 2855 Bayliner last year and purchased a 2005 340 Sea Ray in Florida.
I think the price for the 2004 is on the high side. We paid about the same for our 2005 340 Sundancer (has every option available in 2005) and it had less than 100 hours on the engines.
If you do purchase the boat, you may find the following helpful:
- Your Boat Broker should provide the required paper work (Titles, Bills of Sale etc.)
- State Sales Tax should not apply as you are taking the boat out of the State/US but you should ask for an affidavit for sales tax exemption form.
- You may need two trucking companies; one US and one Canadian. We needed two because of the logistics and permit issues – you may not have that problem in Ontario.
- The boat surveyor I used was a SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) accredited marine surveyor
- USA/Canadian Border Crossing - I used a Broker but the paperwork required was:
o Information from the trucking company: the PARS number and where and when they are crossing the border.
o Clean Bill of Sale for the Boat and Trailer (need titles for both)
o Boat Title (must be faxed to US Customs 72 hours in advance so that they can complete a Title Search). Title should include the gear attached to the boat – radio, GPS, sonar, windlass etc.
o 5% GST is applicable
o Documentation must include the name of the OEM, lists where the boat was manufactured and the date is was manufactured
o Original Trailer Title – the Hauler must have this when he crosses the Border
o See the following website regarding the VIN for the trailer; http://www.ehow.com/how_5004620_check-trailer-vin-number.html

Hope this helps.

I am not sure what the CA US exchange rate is today, but I think the price is a little high. You should be able to get a 2003 340 well under $100K. Look on the internet and compare prices of similar boats. Get an asking price range and then go to about 85-90% of the average price and start your negotiating... Make use you include a survey and sea trial when you make an offer...

There is nothing more confusing or likely to make your head spin than buying a 340! I can attest to that for sure.

There is A LOT more to a boat than just the price and you will find the prices ALL over the place for no reason that you can find.
You have Saltwater vs. Freshwater to consider which creates a considerable gap in price
You have the year of the boat to consider as that will effect financing and rates (Check for recalls for the model years and type engines also)
You CERTAINLY have the condition of the boat to consider which you MUST get a survey when you are serious about one you find. I would not take anyones word on condition.

I dont think that year is as important and the style or look you like. I saw many 2004 or 2005 340's that were not in as good of shape as a 1999 340. They certainly thought they were worth more because of the model year (or how upside down they were):wow::huh:. There are some guys on here with older models that are fantastic and more updated than later models easy!

I finally had to just find a price range to look at boats within ($80 - $110k) and not shy away fromt he ones that seem a little high because of all these factors. I have seen higher priced ones that had no records and questionable care and cheaper ones (like Mine) with docs and records like crazy and in like "new" condition. I initially was one of the guys who started at the bottom looking for the "deal" and thanks to much help from on here there is truly no better item that proves "you get what you pay for" than a boat!

Everything on these boys is expensive, electronics is a big plus, good canvas or camper top is a BIG plus, maintenance records is HUGE.

I know Hamptons 340 on here is taken care of and you can practically find pics of every upgrade he has done on CSR!

I would say shop shop shop. Just my $.02 from going through the boat shopping experience 1+ year ago.

Gentlemen,
I thank very much for your assistance and advise. During my boat visit your information will assist me in making more informed decisions. Not withstanding the boat conditions, electronics, motor size and condition, wiring, salt water or fresh etc...

$125,000 ca is what they are asking for the boat. Not necessarily what you would have to pay for it. If it meets your requirements, make an offer and see what happens. I think the price is a little high, but not as much as you have been led to believe.

That is about 30K more than the market is bringing. I paid 20K less than market price last year. Do your homework and don't rush. Watch Boat Trader, Yacht Trader, Craigslist and Ebay. Not saying buy on ebay, but it will give you an idea of what he market is bringing. You can pick that boat up for about 8K easily.

Hope that helps.

I'm looking to buy a 2002 340 and wanted to see if there was any suggestions, "gotcha's", or warnings before making an offer. It has 8.1's with the original aluminum manifolds (already been doing some reading on that problem). The engines only have 107 hours on them and the generator only has about 25. Obviously, I'll be getting a survey and my mechanic will be inspecting the engines/running gear. I intend to make new bottom paint, replacing the risers, and replacement canvas (canvas is unserviceable) as part of the offer. I've heard a few things about shaft seals being a problem, but can't find too much on it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Fuel managment system

I have a 2000 340 sundancer small engine gas w/v drives. I am considering buying a fuel management system something like FLOSCAN mainly to monitor that I am in the "sweet spot" most of the time. Does anyone have any suggestions. While the newer models have this capability installed I am under the impression the 2000 340 does not.

What is the most efficient non-plane'ing speed/RPM's for this boat.

I am selling my 2005 340 DA with all the options including Nautley davits and a new 9'6 Baltik tender with a new 9.9 Yamaha that has a 6 year warranty. The boat is in excellent condition and fully loaded. I am getting a full engine service on Tuesday with oil, filters and impellers as we are at 203 hours. We love our boat but it is time to move into something larger.

The boat is currently in St Petersburg FL in a covered slip and I am getting ready to sign with a broker on Monday, if you want a deal email me for more details as my asking price is $115 including dingy and all canvas packages prior to signing with broker.

I also upgraded Halogen lights to LED tri color and have new chips for the Garmin GPS, boat is truly turn key.

Let me know - thanks Gerald

I've got a 2006 320 for sale if you'd like it, it's loaded and I'd never not have a genie, we use our so much I'm so glad we ordered the Genie.... and it's a fresh water boat, 350 mags with Bravo 3's like a Porche on the water, not as roomy as the 340 though, but hell of a boat.
