300 Sundancer questions.

The 300 da do board a little water through the door if I chop the throttle. I have run sevreal boats before I bought mine and they all did it. I don't think it's a big deal as the water goes in the cockpit drain and overboard. I found if I pull the throttle back smooth and pause around 2000-1800 rpm for a second to let the boat settle then pull it back to idle I never get any water over the platform. About the fuel sender you can "slave" in a new sender before fully installing it in the tank to ckeck your guage. It wont hurt anything. Looking at the probe design I think you will have a bad probe like mine. Overall I love this boat and I am extremely pleased.

Guys,
Do you have water come in your transom door when you come to a quick stop after being on plane? For starters, it seems the 300DA swim platform is closer to the water than many boats. It always makes me think that the swim platform is going to drag in the water, but of course as soon as it's on plane, it rises quite a ways up. But when we come off plane, we can see a pretty big wave come over our swim platform and come in the back and up the carpet a couple of feet. We never noticed it until this past weekend when Chris was sitting looking aft when I came to a stop. We're both usually sitting up front but this past weekend my youngest son was out with us.
After noticing this we are trying to keep from coming off plane so abruptly and giving it a bit of gas to keep that wave behind us until is dissipates.

Wow Terri - you must be coming off plane aggressively - I have never had this come close to happening, not even in a following sea. I generally ease out of it as described above.

Apologies in advance for bringing up a potentially old topic, but I got a Magma Newport grill and now I'm having trouble. Based on the posted dimensions on Magma's site, I thought it would fit under the aft-facing seat in the cockpit. When I tried to store it there, it comes within about 1/2 an inch of closing, but the seat ends up resting on the handle for the grill's lid. I've tried every which way to settle that thing in there, but with no luck. The only place I can find that it will fit is under the fwd bunk. Concern there is that once I've used it a few times, I'm worried that it's going to have that grill smell all the time, even if I kept it well cleaned.

I've searched the thread here, and several folks talked about where to mount it... but nothing about where you store your grills. Would be interested in revisiting the topic if you all will indulge me :) I was thinking about using a clamp on rod holder and the level lock mount as someone suggested. Also think this one might work to mount it on one of the camper canvas poles (not for underway, just while cooking).

I searched the 280 thread and there are some good ideas where people have made brackets or boxes to store them in the bilge. Looks like there may be room in the 300 if it sits on top of the batteries or the generator. Has anyone tried this on a 300?

Lastly, since the newport hasnt been used yet, it can go back to west marine. If that ends up being the solution, looks like the Kettle 2 might fit under the seat. We had an original gas kettle model without the hinges, but we could never cook on the thing because of big flare ups and super high heat (when on low). Unless of course, "blackened" is your favorite metod for cooking. Does anyone have the kettle 2 and/or provide a good review of it? Looks favorable on WM reviews, but just skiddish after my experience with the old one.

Thanks
James

Last call for grill recommendations, mounting options and storage locations. Appreciate any suggestions.

I contenplated the same thing......My plan was to install the flushmount receivers in the gunnel outboard of the canvas, between the supports and use the magma cover and just leave it there. In the end I bought a webber Q and use quick pull pins to remove the lid - it fits under the aft facing seat......If your hell bent on setting the grill up to use and storing it out of site, will it fit below the cockpit sink?

We have the Newport, or Catalina, which ever one is bigger. We store it in a plastic storage container on top of the batteries. Held down with a couple of bungies. We have the pedestal mount under the swim ladder hatch. I like the pedestal but would also like to have a second mount on the side of the boat.

Bridog, I'm curious. When the mechanic replaced the senders, did the gauge read properly at first or did it read full from the start? I was speaking with my local SR dealer and the SR is out of stock so I'll be waiting 2-4 weeks unless I can find another supplier.
Both fuel senders were replaced in the Spring. Just the Port one isn't working now. I was getting inaccurate reads before, now it just stays at 100%. Also all of you with fuel sender problems check this out. I wasn't so lucky with SR but if any of you are, please let us know.... http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/41277-Bad-Fuel-Senders-Sea-Ray-Fixed-Them

Brian,
Were yours replaced with the Royce senders or the original sea ray ones? I've got the same problems that everyone else has. Senders work but arent accurately calibrated. Tracking the gallons burned is the best I can do, and that doesnt account for generator usage on the one tank.

Thanks

Okay so maybe a dumb question, but I cant seem to find a switch/lever to trailer the drives on my 300DA. I have twin BII drives. The owners manual shows a switch/lever under the starboard side of the helm heading toward the cockpit floor but I dont have that. All i have is a single trim switch on the left side of the port throttle which works both drives at the same time... and then two trim buttons on top of the base to which the two throttles are connected. They work each drive independently.

My question is, how do I tralier the drive (have never needed to since it's on a lift). But more importantly, I just want to make sure that there's no way that I would be running the drives in trailered position if I ran the drievs up as far as they would go with the trim switches. And yes, just because someone already asked me this when talking in person, I do have a second set of switches in the left side accessory switch cluster that works the trim tabs.

May be visiting a friend in a cove with a somewhat shallow entrance this weekend, and thought I might need to raise the drives if I end up there around low tide.

Thanks.

Jim, You need to press the 2 trim switches on top of the throttles. They will rise to a certain point. Full up. Then press even harder on the switches and they will continue to rise to the trailer posistion. Good luck, Brian

I'll have to try that. I dont feel as dumb now. Never saw that anywhere in my manual research over the weekend. I just ran them up with the switches under "normal" pressure until they stopped, but knew it didnt look high enough for trailering!

Thanks

Magma Newport Grill. Any of the 300 owners have a newport mounted on their boat? Would like to see some pictures of the installation if possible. Thanks.

Here's how I did it.

Is that a rod holder attached to the 7/8" handle? If so, did you get the attachment that expqands in the holder and mounts to the bottom of the grill. Sorry for all of the questions but I can't tell from this picture.

Brian,
Where do you store your grill on the boat? I've been trying to find a solution for storing the newport under the aft facing seat, but the seat doesn't lay flush because the Newport's handle is about 1/2" too tall. Only place I can find that it fits is under the front bunk down below, and thats gonna stink!

Also is yours a standard Newport or the infrared?

Might be having some cradles made to store it below in the bilge. We'll see. I'm hoping that works out!

Thanks
James

Morning. Great weekend on the water, topped off with a "check engine" alarm on the smart craft. Was an hour into a 1.5 hour trip up on plane on Saturday when all of a sudden an alarm goes off (two beeps, with a check engine alarm on the port tach guage). I pulled it off plane in a hurry, and checked all pressures, voltages, temps etc. Nothing appeared to be wrong. Went into neutral and opened the bilge, where again, nothing appeared to be wrong. Once we got to our destination, i let the engines cool and checked all fluids again, and nothing was low. The only thing not at the appropriate "full" mark was the trim tabs resivoir (which I'll get to in a minute). Came home all the way with the nice alarm every 10 minutes or so.

Has anyone had this happen? I've searched around in here, and the only thing that seems to trigger that regularly is an idle air controller. Doesnt sound like my issue, as I could/can idle without problem. If no one has any other suggestions, sounds like time to call the mechanic and have him hook the engine up to the computer to see what's going on.

Regarding the Bennett trim tab resivoir. I coulnt figure out how to get the black plastic housing off the top to fill it up. Anyone had luck in this department?

Thanks
James

James, if the vitals on the gauges were where they normally are, and the boat performed normal (or not) , I would seek the expertise of a Merc. mechanic. There are so many damn sensors that if one gets a little fuzz on it, it likely throws a code to trigger the alarm. As for the tab reservoir, I think there is a screw that holds the lexan cover in place. The cover has to be removed to gain access to the filler cap...If you need to add, get a large syringe as the fill hole is not that big.
