220 DA thread

Hey guys. I'm new to this board. I've had my 91 220da a few seasons now. 5.0 Mercruiser. I top out at about 25mph WOT then back it down to 4k RPMs and cruise at about 20mph. Does that sound about right to you? Feels a little slow but I'm not really sure what to expect with this type of cruiser.

Thanks

Welcome 91red220da,
What size and pitch prop are you running? What are the RPMs at WOT?

Dustin

No, to me it sounds wrong. As you can see I posted a similar note a couple of days ago. I have the same kind of engine, and I'm not satisfied with my speed either. I would expect about 34-35 mph. I have an Alpha one gen. I, but i'm not shure about gear ratio. What kind of drive do you have, and do you know the gear ratio?

Regards
Thomas

The engine is original and runs smooth. Drive is an Alpha 1. Don't know the pitch of the prop although I replaced it last season. WOT is about 4300 RPMs. Boat planes out quickly. I can drop it back to 3000 rpms and stay on plane. What prop would you recommend?

speedometer or GPS ?.... a lot of boat speedometers are usually way off.

OK, you were right/. This time I used a GPS and the numbers are a bit more respectable. Just went out with my wife and dog, so a total weight of about 450 lbs (yeah, it's a big dog!!) plus a full tank of fuel. WOT was about 5k rpms and got on plane quickly. Trimmed it out and the GPS read 32mph. Backed it down to 4k to cruise and was cruising at about 26mph. That doesnt seem so bad. probably could have gotten 35mph by myself.

My 1990 220DA with a 5.7 V8 would hit 39mph GPS lightly loaded.

My '89 220 da 5.7 gets 30mph GPS full fuel, full water, full holding tank, + 3 adults & 3 12 and younger kids.

that was this past weekend. :)

With a full fuel and water tank and 3 adults I can get 28 mph on the GPS running 3000 rpm. Am running a 15x16 4 blade prop.

5000 rpm is a bit to high, and it could be because of your prop. I would try another prop with a little more pitch.
For that engine you should reach 4400-4800 rpm.

Yep. 5000 rpm is a bit fast. Not so sure I trust my Tach though. For this season I keep this prop on and just back off the throttle quickly. My prop was new last season but had a bit of electrolysis deteriotion so I'll definitely replace over the winter.

Damn, I'm not happy about that engine. Defect starter, alternator, leaking engine oil, leaking water from transom, insufficient performance and now:

Yesterday was the night called "Sankt Hans Aften" or "Saint Hans Evening" in Denmark. We make fires on the beaches and burn some witches. We send them to Bloksbjerg (somewhere in Germany). We sing a couple of songs. Someone makes a speach. A nice cozy evening. And yesterdays weather was perfect. The best place to be on an evening like that is in the boat, on water, in the bay. You can see the fires all over the beach. A nice view when the sun goes down. So we all went to the marina. Food and beverage was on board. Daddy just has to do the standard procedures before take off, and then:
Water in the engine oil :-(

So guys and girls: If any of you have a cheap 5.0 MPI you don't use. Send it to Denmark - please :smt089

I was curious what did you use to mount the bench seat down to the floor with

Has anyone put an inverter in their 220? I just purchased as 700w inverter from WM and looking for info on where to mount it and where to pull the wiring from

Was out all day last week having a great time when I hit a underwater log!!! What a horrible sound! I brought it to my mechanic and now I need a new lower and upper unit... Unreal. Do you think my engine was affected??

Ouch!. Get yourself a SEI Drive. For about 1000 bucks, you get a new drive plus 3 years no questions asked warrenty, even if you run it with NO oil.

Good luck, and hope you get back on the water soon.
