1998 SR 290 Sundancer - Little Ducky II

Had to have an emergency repair done by the marina facility this week.

Sunday found that my primary bilge pump died (Rule 1500) and really didn't know if the emergency bilge even worked so I had to ask the marina repair facility take a look at both. New primary installed yesterday and the repair tech said the emergency bilge pump (Rule 1000) sounded like a coffee grinder so a new one had to be ordered. Will replace next week.

I'm glad they got me taken care of on short notice.... I was a bit concerned.

It's nice being in full service marina. I probably would have tackled that job but my arms are not long enough and my belly isn't small enough. :D

Their boat tech is 6' something tall and as thin as my pinky....... he was made to work on boats. ;)

I'm looking at a similar task as you. But not necessarily to the same extent.

I've searched this site and Sea Ray's corporate site. I can find the advertising brochure, but NOT the Owner's Manual
for the 1998 SR 290 Sundance.

With all of the work you're doing, do you have an pdf version of the Owner's Manual you'd forward to me?

Thanks.

Mitch:

Thanks much!!!!

I'm looking at several different series of SRs that I can still tow occasionally. With a 10' 2" beam and 10,500 lbs (+fuel, water and the obvious simply cannot do withouts) I can legally town with an inexpensive permit in CA, AZ and NV (even though my F350 isn't LEAGALLY equipped for this).

But I'm bouncing back and forth (and it's giving me a headache!!) between the 310 Sundancer in the 2007 to 2009 range (for lots of bucks) to the pre-2000 290's for much less (+ repair and upgrade costs). Very similar in size.

I noticed that yours is a 1999. And notable differences?

Can't take credit for the link. That's right from Little Ducky's sig. As far as the boat itself is concerned, mine is a 270 (wide beam) as opposed to the SE's with a single.
Buy the biggest boat you can afford to use and maintain properly. Initial cost and fuel are only a small part of the equation.

Well said. I stock pile boat bucks all year long for the 5 months its in the water. Spend atleast 1 day a week at the marina doing maintenance on it even if nothing is broke.

I like that thinking and attitude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One day everything runs great, then the next time I try to head out, port engine locked up. Hydo-locked!
No indication anything was wrong the last trip out. Pulled the plugs and found water in one cylinder but the other 3 plugs on the same side wet too. Then I found milky looking oil in the valve cover.
All new risers and manifolds this past winter!

Damn sorry to see that. Any clue as to where it's coming in? Were the manifolds wet inside? I do know when I changed our flappers I'm surprised at how high the water comes up the Y pipe so in a quick back-down I could definitely see water coming up past the elbows

I put new flappers in same time I did the risers and manifolds. Yes I’m surprised how high the water comes up the exhaust too. Can see the water above the flappers while she’s floating in her slip. Frustrated to say the least. Now to research if it’s a head gasket or do I have another issue?

This is the original setup. I already have the added spacer. There’s no more room under the hatch to go higher. 6” spacer doesn’t fit.

I might be missing something here but I take it you guys have through hull exhaust? Did some of them come from the factory like that?

Oh Noooooooo's. That is sad to see.

Once you figure it out the cause please post up the solution.

You might want to post up on the official 290 thread so you don't curse my fixer-upper thread. ;)

It's sad that you can't trust anyone. I had to put a wi-fi camera on the boat to monitor any shenanigans that might take place.

I purchased this one off of amazon. I wanted one that was a stand alone Wi-Fi camera that did not need a base station and with its included 32 GB SD card everything gets saved to the card and then you can easily save to your phone when you pull it up your videos in the camera's app.

Yup, I put a canary onboard. All cloud, battery lasts about 2 weeks (but is plugged in onboard) and I use marina wifi. Our storage yard has WiFi too so I’m going to keep it running through winter. $130 a year I believe, camera was free. Has some detection intelligence too, I only get alerts when it knows I’m not on the boat and can detect what it believes to be a person vs just motion
