Zyrex bottom coatings

"I thought that sounded insane"

Geez....no kidding. :wow:

Not sure how much I'd want to deal with that broker after hearing that.:smt009

Searaybio270:

What about the labour to apply it? You doing that yourself?

WOW:wow:, My quote was $50/ft plus materials. The paint was $800 and acetone/sandpaper/etc was $200. They do not like it because it suppose to last a long time. All they have to do is do a good sanding job plus acetone. Really no different than any other paint, right?

Just as an aside.....I sent Michelle an e-mail the other day with the link to this thread and suggested that it might be in everyone's interest if they popped in and answered any questions....dispelled any myths....and perhaps even become a sponsor of the site.

I think I would if I wanted to sell my product.

Great idea on the email to Michelle at Z...

Yes, I am painting the bottom of my boat. I am also buying the roller and whatever else it is that Zyrex is selling along with the paint.

Well....whether this proves to be a good product or not remains to be seen....but I sure can't complain about their service. My order was delivered early yesterday morning.:smt038

So you don't necessarily need to sand it down to the gel coat to apply it? $50/ft sounds reasonable.

honestly I don't know. it's a boat I am in the process of buying (or not) - just got back a pretty gloomy survey.

Sorry to hear about the gloomy survey.

What I was told by Michelle at Zyrex was:

Remove all the paint I can.....which is basically getting it down to bare gelcoat. Sand with 40-80 grit sandpaper to basically scuff up the gelcoat surface. This helps the Zyrex coating to better adhere to the surface...she said you don't want it sanded smooth. But you do want all old paint removed or the new stuff won't adhere properly.

Maybe not..but I'm expecting my gelcoat to still have a light blue tint remaining due to the years of blue paint that was on it...I think it may have penetrated into the gelcoat over the years. But she told me she didn't feel that would be an issue...as long as all the surface paint is gone.....and I "scuff" the gelcoat with that 80 grit.

Wash/wipe down with acetone to remove all residue before applying the Zyrex.

That's the method I'm planning to use. We'll see how it goes.

Leaving within the hour for the marina. My boat's bottom will be blasted this morning. Step one is in the works. Of course the weather after today will only be in the 40's for a while so I won't be able to paint the bottom yet, but it's a start. I'll keep you posted and I will try to take some pics. Even a bigger try on posting them. LOL

Pics are mandatory! Also, if you don't mind sharing, I would be interested to know your quote per SQ FT for having the bottom media blasted. It would be nice to have a baseline # for comparison sake. PM if more comfortable. If not, no problem :)

The cost was $750. I cleaned up the tarps with the sand and paint. I actually wanted it that way. He did blow off any sand/paint particles from the other boats. I think it was maybe 7 or 8 boats. When I left today around 3pm you would never have known he was there. I still have some sanding to do but very little. Paint should be here Thursday or Friday and next week - Phase II.
Pics to follow.

If you don't mind sharing, who did you have do the blasting for you? I ended up taking the bottom paint off 1/2 of the hull myself, but it's just taking too long with other stuff I've got to do so I got a few quotes, but all were around $600 for just doing the other half of my 330!

I had the Sandman do it. Pm if you want and I'll send you his info

I went by the boat yard today and they had just applied 2 coats of Zyrex on a 33 foot Chaparral Cruiser. It looks really good!!!!

This past weekend, I took a mop and brushed the transom off from the swim platform. The slime/algae came of with ease. It took me less than 5 minutes to clean the transom. The paint still looks good!!!

tleeah - that's good to hear. I am finishing up the scrapping of the bottom and realized last night my "blaster guy" didn't move the jack stands. So a little more work to do. I hope by either Friday afternoon or Saturday to put on my first coat.

Searaybio270,
That is awesome. I was hoping that the weather might cooperate with you. Cannot wait to hear how it goes. Remember to move the stands for the paint :).
