Zyrex bottom coatings

If you decide to use a super slick epoxy bottom paint be sure to tell the marina that lifts your boat. There is a chance it will slip out of the sling if precautions are not taken.
I'm keeping an eye on this thread. I really hope it works in saltwater. I've boated for years in fresh water, Austin Lake Travis but now I'm back in the NE battling salt water, a 10 year bottom paint would be unbelievable.

Good point of the lifting. They suggest to chain or secure the forward and aft slings together so they will not slip.

I don't see how boats would 'slide' when blocked on the keel?

The stands are only used to keep the boat upright.

Doug

I've also heard that it can slide off the winter storage blocks easily, especially in heavy winds. I'm not buying that 100% however the same marina owner that told me about the sling told me about the blocks and he hasn't lied to be yet.

My boat is about 20000lbs. I can't see a good wind coming from the bow to the stern pushing it off the blocks b/c of the paint. I have a 40ft SR and I am having my boat bottom done with Zyrex. I let you know how it works.

It seems most boats with Zyrex are under 30' and are trailered.
I would like to know how the larger boats over 30' does when blocked up on land.
Would or could the boat slide on the blocking while on land?
My bow pulpit received minor damage when my boat slide on the trailer just moving the boat around the yard. The boat yard was moving my boat and getting it ready to launch. They had the boat on the trailer. The driver applied the brakes to slow down and my boat slid about 5 feet and smashed into the front stand of the trailer. My Sea Ray is a 290 Sundancer that weighs about 10,000 lbs. I happen to be at the yard when it happened and could not believe it. :wow:
I was blessed the boat did not end up off the trailer. When moving a boat with Zyrex, strap it down really good even if just moving the boat around the boat yard.

Be really careful with carpet on stands or trailers, etc. Plastic will grip really well and keep stands in place. You should be fine, but strap down when moving around. I'm speaking (unfortunately) from experience.

Travis - I take it that the trailer runners that the boat sits on weren't wet? I am going to call Zyrex about the stats for larger boats. I'll get back to you.

No, they were dry. You will be fine as long as you strap down when moving around. The momentum is killer. Let me know what Zyrex says.

Thanks to Old Vet and Searaybio270 for your replies. I'm buying a brokerage boat at a Marine Max in Florida and would like to have the bottom painted before it is shipped up to chicago. The broker told me that the Zyrex would cost $6000-$8000 to apply on a 33 foot boat because of all the prep work. He was generally against it.

tleeah do you mind me asking how much it cost you to have your boat prepped and painted? You have a 290 I believe, correct?

Just got this from Zyrex. Thought you all might like to read it.

From Michelle at Zyrex.........

Yes it has been on boats that are 30-38 range. The boat that will see the biggest increase in speed will be a larger boat that sits in the water or has a lot of bottom paint on it. As far as we know Zyrex is the only coating that is water proof, others are water resistant so they hold water. Even a brand new boat will weigh more in the end of the season then in the beginning, even if it is trailored or on a lift. It is like putting the bottom of your boat in tupperware. This is one of the reasons Zyrex decreases your fuel consuption & increases your speed. Another factor is that 1 gallon of Zyrex is 8lb and bottom paints are between 17-22lb so that adds weight before you hit the water.

6000 to 8000?. That seems really high. Paint is 1000 blasting is appx 1500 . I'm doing the painting myself to save a little cash

I have a 40ft SR - Sand blasting - $750. Zyrex paint at $200 per X5 gallons = $1000 + $750 = $1750.00 IMHO I wouldn't do it down there.

I thought that sounded insane. It would be a lot more convenient to have the boat painted where it is than to paint it after it gets up here, but not if I'm going to get fleeced.

Is it essential to have an anti-fouling agent in the paint? This boat is a 330 DA and it will likely be in the water from May 15 thru Oct 15 and be used 1-2 nights a week and most weekends.

No on the Anti-fouling agent and no barrier paint. Go to the Zyerx site and read about it. Plus look down a couple of posts to what I posted from Zyerx.

"I thought that sounded insane"

Geez....no kidding. :wow:

Not sure how much I'd want to deal with that broker after hearing that.:smt009

Searaybio270:

What about the labour to apply it? You doing that yourself?

Just as an aside.....I sent Michelle an e-mail the other day with the link to this thread and suggested that it might be in everyone's interest if they popped in and answered any questions....dispelled any myths....and perhaps even become a sponsor of the site.

I think I would if I wanted to sell my product.

WOW:wow:, My quote was $50/ft plus materials. The paint was $800 and acetone/sandpaper/etc was $200. They do not like it because it suppose to last a long time. All they have to do is do a good sanding job plus acetone. Really no different than any other paint, right?
