Would it be bad karma???

Me lighten up! How about you knuckleheads that are taking all this superstitious nonsense seriously! I cannot believe what ya'll believe, it is wonder you can walk out the front door everyday. Did you step on a crack & break your mom's back? Did a black cat cross your path? Walk under a ladder? Or does all this nonsense only apply to your boating?

Go f*ck yourself. If you believe in God great. If you believe and fear God and Poseidon's wrath all the better. If you respect the traditions of the sea as many sailors have for centuries, then you, as a true sailor, are the norm. If not and it's nothing to you, fine, but don't p*ss on that tradition. Our own Navy respects and honors many of these traditions.

Your distain for this tradition is apparent, but disrepectful. If I told you to disbelieve in God and told you it's nonsense, what would you say? You'd tell me to "go f*ck yourself" it sounds like. Your angle on this is clear. You're an ass.

Todd, Don't hold back buddy, go ahead and speak your mind!:smt043:smt043Your pal, Brian

Apparently many of ya'll have your panties in a wad! Some have even reached the point of vulgarity! I have no problems with tradition, but when someone blames an accident on the fact that they did not name their boat properly then I believe one has taken things a bit too far. (See ealier post) As for the US Navy, I spent a lot of time using them as a taxi service, (former Marine here, we have many traditions but no superstitions!) and have depended on their training & professionalism, and many mornings I had banannas with my breakfast. Maybe that is why Marines make better sailors, we do not allow silly superstitions to get in our way, we rely on training and hard work to get us through the day.

Pass the Popcorn!

Exodus 20:3
"You shall have no other gods before Me."
  • Are you a polytheist?
    • What is a polytheist? It is someone who believes in more than one god.
  • Do you behave like a polytheist? Do you have little idols in your life that control you?
  • Who do you trust?
  • What do you trust?
  • Where is your hope?
To have a god before Jehovah means to give worship, adoration, devotion, trust, or hope to something or someone other than the true God, therefore, according to Exodus 20:3 . . .

Tag your it!

Who knew a boat renaming thread would turn into a full blown religious arguement
just to stir the pot a bit ....
keep in mind most modern christian religion is based on ancient pagan rituals.

and it's not lamb's blood you smear on the cabin door....use goat...matches the teak better

God told Moses during the ten plagues to sacrifice a lamb and spread the blood on the door to avoid the Angel of Death. What does that have to do with silly boat superstitions. I don't think any of them were original commandments from God. Maybe some drunken sailors!

Our panties? You're the one who has called out those that are keeping with the maritime traditions of paying respect to Poseidon as knuckleheads. YOU are the one taking it to the religious wacko extreme worried that if one does they are worshiping another God. Even if one did, who cares? Again you're disrespectful to others beliefs and feel that if you force yours down the others here is OK. Well, it's not. You're being an ass. This is the reason I stay out of the holding tank and other religious and political threads. I won't stand by while some small minded wack job decides he's going to call out crap like this and ruin the point of the thread. As mentioned before, lighten up.

Only plagues I've seen recently are mosquitoes and stupid people on the water
and my supply of lamb's blood is getting short.
think I'll save it for an emergency.

1. With considerable deference...two thirds of the planet believes otherwise. To most...Christianity is a superstition. 2. As to polytheism...you have to admit that there is that whole "Holy Trinity" thing going on in your court, too. 3. Proving your point with the Bible is the same as Islam proving its point with the Qu'ran. It identifies the point of reference for someone's beliefs but circular arguments don't prove themselves.

You had to mention the Qu'ran... this thread is doomed! Or hijacked in a way:smt043

The way I see do what you want. Rename your boat...who cares. Don't rename your boat... again, who cares. You live with a jobber name on your beloved craft. And even then, I couldn't care less.

Im gonna remand my boats, pour Budweiser on it and call it good.

But keep it going guys, this is funny to watch:smt101

I brought popcorn

Wow, now we bring God into traditions and superstitions for sailors? Really..... get a life.

Thank you Todd for your post and I agree 100%.

Hey I believe what I believe and the last I looked I was in America, so by God's wish and our fall'in military members honor I will continue to do so.......

NOTE:

A "Veteran" whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to, and including his/her life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.

Go ahead and pray to Nehalennia to keep you safe on the waters, but I don't know any Navy Captains that pray to her. Remember one thing, there is only one God in a foxhole!

Thank you for your service to the country, btw. Again, with considerable respect...you have just identified the crux of the polemic. While there may only be one God in a foxhole...where that foxhole is, who is in it, and the circumstances surrounding the immediate futureof the inhabitants all have a whole lot to do with the communication protocols employed.

(I will admit to considerable envy toward those fortunate souls who have this subject all figured out. In all candor that my personal attempts at appeasing the gods through goat sacrifice have been less than successful.)

Remember one thing, there is only one God in a foxhole!

Wow, little did I know when I first posed the question about a second christening that I was going to unleash the wrath of so many people. It's been kinda fun to sit back, sip a bit of Patron, and watch this.

From what I gather so far, most of you don't see a problem with a second christening. Some of you (one in particular) seems to have no time in his life for such tomfoolery as ancient mariner traditions, and others take various positions in between those two. By all means, I'm certainly not suggesting we quit the back and forth jabs that have been so entertaining.

BTW, for those of you non-believers (Hellman Huddle are you listening???), a little known fact about the Edmund Fitzgerald was that the ship suffered a series of mishaps during her launch: it took three attempts to break the champagne bottle used to christen her and she collided with a pier when she entered the water. Also, one of the spectators who was watching the launch suffered a heart attack and died. I'm guessing the souls of the 29 on board that night that wish the bottle had broken on the first swing. But then, that's adding fuel to the fire so I'll not say any more about that. Gordon Lightfoot did a pretty good job already!

Don't do it you're going to hell.

My oh My, where should I start.
Leave me preface this with the acknowledgement that I am posting to a mariners form. One of the most superstitious lots on planet earth.

As I stated previously, I'm not a superstitious person at all. I know where Hellman is coming from but I believe his intentions are ill placed on this forum. I see many "traditions" in the Christian faith that many make their doctrine with little or no bases biblical fact. Traditions of music, dress and personal actions have infiltrated the church and caused more dissention than out right heresy.

Same goes for superstitious rites, ordinances, hex's and the like.

I make no apology for naming my faith. I find no inconsistency in the trinity as I am a father, a son and the spiritual guide of my family. Three in one if you will. My belief is not based in druidism as that faith is based on signs and times of the earth cycle.

Christianity is the only religion that claims total salvation through its single profession of Christ as the savior. All others claim a prophet that requires works for achieving the better after life.

All this I believe to be true an accurate. I also believe that my God will not kill me if I throw salt over my shoulder or take bananas on my fishing boat or break a bottle over the bow of my boat.

Jesus said “render unto Caesar what is Caesars’ and unto God what is Gods”. I refuse to put mans intuitions and superstitions at the same level as Gods precepts and principles.

Just a little oil to pop the corn with Scott.

BTW I love Gordon Lightfoots rendition
