Wintering in NC?

It's time to find a new informant, cuz this one is giving you a bunch of BS info. Lol

Trust me, I know exactly where these guys are.

Yeah, that's not creepy...

You stalking those guys?

FWIW
I don't think that they are spreadsheet boaters, either. We get in the boat, ride until about 3pm, and then start calling marinas within the next 50 miles or so to see if they have space available. We have a real lack of organization to our boating...

Ok, on the same note, we're actually looking at places to retire to and Southport NC is really pushing homeownership here on LI. The place were flying down to look at has a Marina ,etc. we will buy now and leave NY in 6 yrs anyone give advice? Any experience would help us.

I'm not sure if this has been covered elsewhere but it's something to be aware of...

[h=3]NC registration required for documented boats, fee increase[/h][h=4]Reported By: Mike Ahart, News Editor (WG Staff)[/h]

Reminder: Registration fees are going up starting Oct. 1, plus all USCG Documented vessels in the state 90-days or more will need to be registered.
Confusion abounds on how this new law affects USCG documented boats in the state, especially since the NC Wildlife Resources Commission website is a bit vague. Do they require that a state registration number be affixed to the bow of a USCG documented boat? That seemed strange to me, so I called them -- but that's the answer I got from the first agent I talked to. I kept pressing "up the chain" and confirmed that the first agent's information was incorrect. Vessels do need to be registered and the fee paid; however, only the sticker needs to be affixed (on the starboard bow, according to two of the agents).
(8/2/2013) NC Senate Appropriations Bill 402 passed, increasing registration fees on vessels over and above what was passed in Senate Bill 58. It also requires all USCG documented vessels in the state (more than 90 days) to be registered and fees paid. The stated purpose of the original bill (SB58) was to "provide additional funding for dredging of the state's shallow draft navigation channels." With the passage of the appropriations bill, 50% of the fees collected are to go into the Shallow Draft Navigation Channel and Lake Dredging Fund. Another $3 of the fees ($9 for 3-year) is to be used "for boating access area acquisition, development, and maintenance."
Starting Oct. 1, 2013, one year registration fees will be:

  • One Year: $30.00 for a vessel that is less than 26 feet in length. $50.00 for a vessel that is 26 feet or more in length (was $15.00 for any length vessel).
  • Three Year: $90.00 for a vessel that is less than 26 feet in length. $150.00 for a vessel that is 26 feet or more in length (was $40.00 for any length vessel).
According to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission website, "Effective October 1, 2013, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) documented vessels that have been in North Carolina for more than 90 consecutive days, must be registered in the state. However, federal law restricts states from issuing titles for documented vessels since the USCG issues a Certificate of Documentation (COD) to owners of documented vessels which supersede a state title. To register a documented vessel you will need to submit a copy of your COD as proof of ownership, a completed and signed VL-1 Form and the appropriate fees for registration only. See website for more information and instructions.

Joe, wherever you decide, make sure it's a waterfront with large dock to fit couple of boats. I'll rent one spot from you.

Just registered my new today. $60 for three years. Goes up to $150 after 10/1.

I don't guess I'll tell you that I passed a gas station today with regular at $3.11/gallon.

Damn, reg here is still in the $3.69 price range and I can only use premium at $4.13. 6 yrs can't come fast enough so I can leave this BS taxed up the a** state !!!

Does anyone have any info on New Bern, NC? Is it worth considering as a winter home port?

Beautiful spot. Fresh water. Fairly remote. No direct flights from NY.

I was suggested to look into it, but when I start searching there was very limited info on things to do. Cruising guide has just one pic and few words that doesn't justify anything.

Are there any family activities? Good cruising destinations?
