I never do.
I must admit. I had a few times I came around from the backside of the So Calif offshore islands in the evening and at night. Was greeted with some steep 12 ft windblown seas.
I was so busy working the waves. I never thought of putting a PFD on

One night spending 4 hrs battling the waves crossing the channel. I did start to think of how much I don't want to end up in the drink, treading water all night.

Our kids, YES, always, even on the docks and even when not moving unless we know we're at the dock and they're in the cabin, hanging out.

Mo and I, no, but we always have our PFD, behind my helm seat ready to go.

Always on the kids, we keep our close by. When we have other families cruising with us, if they have kids I make the parents (1 or both) wear one as well. Makes me feel better anyway....I also drink soda and eat pop rocks at the same time, so I live on the edge a little!

Welcome aboard, that's funny. Living on the edge for sure............You own a portable generator don't you?

The kids yes untill they turn 12. The wife and I no, we have a bag of 5 life vests on the bridge available in the open and also in the cockpit when we leave the dock.

Always!

Once you are in the water it is too late!

We once had a whale breach in front of us while we were zoom zoom aorund PWS. We barley missed it. If we would have hit it we could have been thrown over.

ALWAYS while under way.

If Conditions look like they are going to turn bad... everyone including the dog puts on a life vest. Iffy swimmers wear a flotation belt at all times, most don't want to wear a life vest all of the time but there are plenty handy and I won't hesitate to ask someone to put one on. I keep two in the dinghy at all times. I keep a knife handy to cut the dinghy straps if we need to abandon ship. I also put a life vest on if I'm pushing the boat (twice a season, once in the beginning and once at the end to see how the performance holds up). Otherwise it's a " they are there if you need them" vibe.

So my answer is NO, unless conditions change.

Children always, but adults are given instructions and shown where they are. Most opt not to wear them, but my sister feels better with it on. If the weather turns, everyone gets one.

Our son wore one all the time up until last year, now that he is 15 he wears one when my wife and I do:

- running at night
- running anytime on the open Bay

Running on the river, not so much.

Now Gary, if you do the statistical analysis on the data you will find that more people would wear parachutes on a plane then PFDs on a boat…. Go figure:huh:

Kids under 12 always, Adults only when weather/seas warrant or when we are required like when we are in locks, etc. Not sure if all state require them in locks?

First time I've heard of the lock thing I'll be checking into that for here. But I'm the same way I don't wear one it's just to flipin hot down here but kids ALWAYS have them on no matter what. Also those I know that can not swim have them on.

I do chuckle a little when people say they can stand in 4 feet of water. Anyone ever stood in water over 2 feet deep with a 2 knot tidal current? How about 4 feet?

YES, Not here on the gulf side but on the atlantic side at Daytona beach I was standing in water about knee deep and I could feel the water going otu with so much force it actually startled me.
