From the USCG...

There were 685 deaths related to boating in the US in 2007.
Two-thirds of those victims drowned. Over 90% of them that drowned were not wearing life jackets. Only 8 of them were children.

I just took a boat safety course and was told a large % had their fly down.

Speaking off, did anyone else notice the picture of the people in the life raft after the plane went down in the Hudson last week? One guy in the raft had his life vest on backwards. It looked like a big set of ear muffs.

Or taking a john boat out in rough seas.

Actually, that's not the case. The number one cause of boating accidents is "Operator Inattention" (not alcohol) and the vast majority occur in local waters on calm days...

Oh yeah... there were only 7 deaths reported by the USCG in 2007 for CO poisoning. ;-)

Ok then break it down by drug/alchol use, type of boating activity etc...

Rob

Or how many couldn't swim at all or were weak swimmers...
Last year there was a guy who drowned on a small local lake 'cause he borrowed a canoe from the guy whose house he was working on- no life jacket and he couldn't swim. Non-swimmers that go canoeing without a vest...

Because we live on the water (and have a pool as well) it was of paramount importance that our childred learned to swim- and each was doing so by the age of two.

Weak/non-swimmers should obviously wear one, because an unexpected fall overboard could be fatal regardless of water temp or sea conditions.

If I'm not driving....and my boat is moving....I've got bigger problems than wearing a PFD.

As long as you brought up CO. You point out the majority of those that drown don't have a preserver on. In CO poisoning incidents a huge majority didn't have CO detectors.

How many people mow the grass in open tow sandles?

Without ear plugs?

Do you use a CO detector during this activity? Or do you feel you don't need one because it is diesel?

Sometimes with sandals, buy not usually. My mower is a 60 inch ZTR and the blades can only be engaged when you are sitting in the seat. If you raise up with blades engaged, then the motor dies instantly. I nver mowed with sandals using a push type mower.

Earplugs: 100% when mowing or leaf collecting. 3 blades turning at 19K RPM is loud!

CO: Not as of yet, but since receiving my trendly personal CO detector I am going to try it this spring. It has buzzer, vibrator, and a flashing light when it goes off so I should be able to feel the vibration.

Baack OT: My grandson who is 2 always wears a PFD and it is put on at the parking lot.

Most of the drowning deaths while boating occur when boating from small boats. As the size goes up, the incidence of drowning goes down dramatically.

I hate ear plugs. I much prefer circumaural hearing protectors. Now that I have active noise canceling headphones, I'll wear them instead. For under a hundred bucks, from Amazon why not get a pair? You want to use a CO detector while mowing the grass?

OK... No bashing... give honest answers... this poll is anonymous so you can tell the truth...

Does everyone (i.e. adults, captain, children) wear PFDs while your boat is cruising? This does not count if you are drifting around sunbathing but when going from point A to point B.

Hurry... Your vote and comments could make you famous.
No, we don't.

I want to edit my reponse. Normally I wouldnt wear a PFD, unless I was on a Bertram..

Yeah, but most of us can cook dinner without taking off a finger...sometimes people need to be a little extra careful in life...due to they are injury prone to begin with.
