Valve Cover Removal on 454/7.4L

Lol!!!

I have cruised well over 200 nautical miles so far this season while burning over 300 gallons of off-road diesel fuel. Most of which is ocean time, and there are a few Barnegat Bay miles in there too. BTW...a nautical mile is related to a knot....google it!!!

...on someone else's boat...

I got in almost 250 miles just this weekend. Dom must be dragging a sea anchor....

Hey Ron,

Had that EXACT thing happen to me 3 years ago. That sensor just dropped dead without warning on Port Engine. I replaced both. Expensive little buggers too... Glad to see you're back up/running!

This part was about $56. Did you have the IGNTION AMPLIFIER go bad? That's over $300, partly b/c they're not made anymore. This ignition sensor is still readily available - it fits inside the distributor.

Ron, I am glad to hear that you will be up and running this week end... I have missed you on the water... Do you want to plan a raft up for this week end? There aren't any jelly fish yet, so life is good...

Sounds great but not sure when the parts will come in. Hope to have them on by midweek so I can install on Fri. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Ron,

We will have my Mom and Sister on the boat on Sunday... Saturday we have a graduation party for a friend's daughter.... Sunday we will probably hang out in River at Windy Cove, near where you used to keep your boat, but we are flexible on where we go... Silver Bay may be nice and its closer to you... We are would like to raft up. I have a new Magma infrared grill, which I mounted on a pedestal under the swim ladder door. It works great... No jelly fish yet... Governors had a lot of seaweed on Memorial Day.

Parts came earlier this week, installed on both engines yesterday. Very simple job. Cleaned all the contacts on both dist caps and rotors. Also adjusted timing and idle. They sound great but have not done a shakedown yet.

New ignition sensor seems to be a much better design. If you look at the old one in the pic above, there's a LOT of exposed metal and, as such, much more to get corroded. The new sensor has no screw terminals. The three wires emerge from a sealed unit. Even the magnets are sealed in the plastic housing. The only metal is the stainless steel sleeved bolt holes for the mounting screws. Also has nicely designed SEALED bullet connectors for the white/red and white/green wires - makes removal as simple as a quick pull.

New sensor...

Took an hour + boat ride at all possible RPMs today. Ran superb. No hard cold-starting problem anymore; fuel consumption was dead-even on both floscans (there had been a 10-20% difference - port burning more) for years. All this work may have resolved other gremlins (ignition and electrical) in the system. Whatever it is, I don't care. Hopefully this ends the drama!

You might even get up over 14 knots now!

Dale

I don't speak "knots," but heading back up the river, with 5 adults, full fuel and slight tailwind, I was up to 22mph at my usual cruise RPM (around 3300 and secondaries not engaged), burning 30gph. Like I said, maybe some gremlins accidentally dispensed of!
