I got my weekly email from BoatTest.com today and guess what I see but a picture of my boat (the picture had been posted on CSR) attached to an article on Pro Polish products. I can assure you I never used Pro Polish to get the shine shown in the picture . My stuff is a lot better. :smt043

The excerpt from the email is shown below.

Edited on April 15th

BoatTest.com has removed the picture of my boat from their email and substituted a picture of Pro Polish instead. Because I copied the portion below from my email the picture of my boat is also gone from the text I copied below. If you look at your own copy of the email you will see it is gone as well. I just wanted to state this for the record in case someone looks at this post in the future. This was the picture in question.

To Wax or To Polish?
That is the Question

Waxing and compounding is hard work, particularly on anything over 20’. Where is Tom Sawyer when you need him? How about Huck Finn?
The team at Shurhold tells us that their Pro Polish is better than an old fashioned wax. Well, we certainly hope so, since few things are as old as wax. (The ancient Egyptians used it!) Shurhold’s techs say that Pro Polish is a polymer-based formula with cosmetic-grade ingredients and contains no fillers or talc. They also told us it goes on a lot quicker and easier than old fashioned wax. That’s all we needed to hear. But then they said, “Wait! There’s more!” Then they told us that Pro Polish protects a gel coat finish against sun (it has UV inhibiters), salt, acid rain, and other harsh environmental elements. BoatTEST.com staff have used Pro Polish and have found this claim to be true and they report that when they buffed it out, there wasn’t the white powdery residue. Shurhold told us that the white powder we get from other products was talc which is used as filler. After polishing your boat if you have any left you can use it on your car, RV, motorcycle, PWC, or most anything else where you want a high-gloss shine. To get 10% off a purchase use the code below.

I think a lifetime supply of free Shurhold products would be adequate. :smt043

Hush money, or he can come and wax it for you.

I got the email too. You should post the photo at Getty images with a $1,000,000 per use fee...

Flattering...and potentially lucrative...what could be better.:smt038

But it's false advertising. That's where I would draw the line, and if he doesn't wish for his boat to be in the email because of it, I think he has every right to ask that his boat picture be removed.

It (and copyright) don't work that way...

Then it's time to start carrying around a bazooka! nevermind me, that's the margarita talking. I just downed one, and then realized I shouldn't be drinking after taking muscle relaxants. I'd better go to the hospital I guess.....starrtingg to fell funny

Be sure to bug bomb your boat first.

As to the picture, I would mildly unhappy, yet flattered that my work was used as an example of a great wax job.

It only got used in the email not in the product advertisement itself. If it was used in the advertisment, I might pursue it but strictly to ask that it be removed as it misrepresents the use of a product.

I guess it is just a reminder we all ought to be cognizant of what we put into cyberspace if we are concerned it might be used improperly and Gary's suggestion on copyright identification on the pictures is a good one if we are concerned about the picture's possible use. I had one other situation where somebody contacted me about using one of my outdrive pictures for some type of artcle on outdrive corrosion. I politely refused them. I would have done the same thing here if I was contacted by BoatTest.com first. They are the ones resonsible for snapping up the picture, not Shurehold Products.

That's CRAZY....

I believe you used Star-brite with PTEF? I would write them to get them involved...maybe you can make a little something from both entities...

Nice to see the cleaning people and boattest.com are coming to CSR to get their info.

There is a picture of something on my boat on a site sponsor that the product did not come from them. I haven't complained - was a little surprised to see one of my pictures on their website.

(your account does not allow private message so I'm posting this here)

Dave S,

Hi, I am Barry Berhoff President of Shurhold. Your message on this forum was forwarded to my attention. I would like to apologize and explain the situation. Boattest.com is one of many sites we sponsor. As part of our sponsorship they do test the products and write up little blurbs about their thoughts in their email newsletter. On many occasions they add an image to their blurb. Since these blurbs are written by them we do not see them nor do we provide them with the image. I see the newsletter the same day you do. I have spoken to my contact there that we are not happy with how they used an unapproved image.

With that said I would like to appologize again and send you a gift of some Shurhold products. Please send me a private message with your address details.

Regards,

Barry Berhoff

Way to step up Barry even though it sounds like this was the responsibility of boattest.com. :smt038
