Tropical Storm Ian Prediction as of 0200 EDT.

We are supposed to be leaving for Orlando wit the kids to go to Universal for the weekend. Not sure that is going to happen. Stay safe down there.
Yeah, just rescheduled my trip to Clearwater Beach this week. Sux. This thing came out of nowhere.

Yesterday (Wed) winds started to pick up around 7 PM and at my home peaked at around 50 at 4 AM this morning (Thurs). 6:50 AM right now and a pic from my aft camera at the marina. Power management system on the boat says no power interruption at all. No issues to report luckily.

Talked with the captain of the boat next to us, he is physically on his boat.

He said sustained 45 winds, with gusts to 55-60. I think the worst has now passed. This was worse than what we got with IAN.

Only thing I know so far, I have one of the eisenglass panels damaged. Not horrible, part of the older panels on the bridge that I had planned to replace this winter.

Lee Werner Park is in Cocoa which is on the west bank of the indian river. Looks like a SR 400 Sedan Bridge. I suspect that boat might have been slipped in Port Canaveral which gets cleared during named storms and anchored off Cocoa to weather the storm then broke loose. That seawall is typically six or so feet above the water. Also looks like a sailboat met it's demise. We stop often at that long dock for lunch in Old Cocoa.
Between Ian and Nicole the Barge Canal is littered with sunk old sail boats and power boats that have been moored in it for years. The Barge Canal traverses East/West across Merritt Island and connects Port Canaveral / Banana River to the ICW (Indian River). When the port is cleared the Barge Canal fills up with commercial boats and barges as well as the boats from the marinas; it's quite a sight to see.

Just amazing how resilient Florida (Captiva) residents are….I have been here to the mucky duck a few times….not sure how damaged they were but can guess pretty bad as they are water level like the rest of the island

We were there in September last year. There was almost nothing between them and the beach. It's amazing they're reopening so soon.

Are tourists back on the islands already? Or will they be primarily serving locals?

We're displaced from Sanibel thanks to Ian. For the time being all of the beach parking lots are still closed, so there is no public beach access available. They're trying to get a couple of them open in February. The causeway reopened to non-residents a couple weeks ago, so anyone can come over other than during night time curfews still in effect. It's still pretty much like a war zone, though they've hauled 1.5m yards of debris off. Captiva (Mucky Duck) doesn't seem anywhere near as impacted by surge as where we are (mid-island Sanibel, 3rd house from the Gulf beach). We had at least 14' surge on our street, and it got into the main living level of an elevated home. Meaningful recovery, as in businesses completely starting over, will take many, many years. A few are starting to come back, but it's a tough go for them without tourists. Nearly all of the condos and hotels are uninhabitable, so there is nowhere to stay on island. We also own a rental condo on the beach and they're saying well into 2024 before we'll have guests back.

Slowly but surely businesses are opening on Sanibel, several eateries are open. On Captiva, Mucky Duck opens next week. The corner grocery is open. We cruised down to Naples after Christmas, then over to Tween Waters just after New Yrs. Tween miraculously fared well. Docks intact, ships store didn't flood, some cottages damaged, and roofs of the hotel buildings are vinyl covered. This is the narrowest part of Captiva Island, thus it's indian derived name. I thought the whole place would have washed away into Pine Island Sound. The Old Captiva House restaurant was virtually undamaged, opened in December, breakfast, lunch, dinner. Had dinner there, inside like nothing happened. Pools were open, and the beach was fine with plenty of shells. Relief workers stayed in the rooms pretty quickly after the storm, including Tween staff who worked tirelessly there Now its open for guests. South Seas Resort at the North end of Captiva was severely damaged, but progress is well underway. Another favorite cruise destination for us but not expected to open for another several months.

We’ve been in the Ft Myers area for a few weeks now (we RV in this area for part of the winter) and we heard on the news that a few businesses on the beach were reopening so we ventured over yesterday.
On one hand it is amazing to see the progress made, compared to photos we’ve seen right after the storm, but there is still a long way to go of course. There is destruction everywhere but the complete eradication of all of the buildings along the beach in the Times Square area near the pier is what made the largest impression on us. Some of the businesses are setting up make shift kitchens on the sidewalks using propane stoves etc (think food truck type setups without the truck) so they can open. There are also several food trucks.
For those that know the area, we had lunch at Wahoo Willies. Snug Harbor is now open, and both of those are pretty much back to normal with their full facilities including restrooms.
A few people were on the beach catching some sun but for right now Lee county is advising not to go into the water or walking the beach barefoot because of debris.
It’s very sad, but it will be back.

We saw them putting the finishing touches on this new to code home last winter when we were here.
Obviously there had to be carport level damage from water, and probably wind and projectile damage to siding, but they already have it all repaired and looking brand new again. All of the surrounding “old” buildings don’t exist anymore.

Plenty on YouTube with drone videos plus Sanibel & Captiva Facebook groups on just days post Ian and frequently with updates/progress. Hard to describe the destruction we saw and still see on our trips to our boat. So many lost, sunk, or severely damaged boats.
