Trim Issues

On most gauges, the extent of the trim limit (not into trailer position) is shown between 1/3 and 1/2 (think fuel gauge). This depends on how the trim position sender is adjusted, though.

I imagine this can fluctuate from one gauge to another. On mine when in the full up position (where the trim limit would be not the trailer position) the gauge is at ¾ of the way up. Not sure if this is how it was originally or if after 17 years at some point something was fiddled with. My suggestion would be to get the correct measurements on the drive and see what that equates to on your gauge.

And that's not out of the "normal", either. It really just depends on the trim position sender (which is very easy to adjust, by the way).

My question is when you are trimmed all the way up/out should the gauge needle be all the way to the top, in the "Up" position? or is this postion to indicate the "trailered" positon?

The Mercruiser service manual says to adjust the trim position switch so that the gauge needle is at the bottom mark of the gauge in the full down position (See page 4A-12). So you may or may not read to the top mark on your gauge in the full up position...

Thanks Guys.

I got the wires spliced and everything seems to be operating correctly. I found this link below that appears to give me the correct measurement as to where the trim limit switch would have kicked in (had trouble finding the measurement in the Mercruiser Installation manual I found online). So if I understand this correctly I should raise the trim until I reach the point where the measurement on the cylinders reaches 21 ¾ inch (I believe my 1995 alpha is considered the earlier model). Once there, mark that on the trim gauge as the highest point the drive should be trimmed up while the boat is in gear.

The correct measurement for your Mercruiser Alpha I Gen II drive is 20-3/4" (see page 4A-14). You and I have the same boat. They have the Gen II drives in them.

There's also some troubleshooting steps for your symptoms on 1C-15...but you've pretty much figured that out.

This might be helpful; the Mercruiser Service Manual #14 for the drive unit.

Enjoy!

Thanks Tom thats a big help. I was having some trouble finding that exact info and it looks like I may have had the wrong measurment. I'll work on that this weekend and make sure it is correct.

Thank you for the manual! That will be a big help.

Sure thing. I just had to tweak my trim limit switches to the proper measurement too as I removed a spacer within my trim cylinders, so it was all fresh in my mind.
