Thinking of Re-upholstery

Not for nothing fella's, I posted a question and it turned into Dog's farting and salt spray on Sunbrella. Gary it looks Great! Now does anyone have any comments re: the original topic, got yours Gary thank you. Snowing again in Boston. This sucks! thanks :smt021

We redid the sofa on our 370 express to get rid of the out of Africa zebra black and white fabric (what were they thinking??) We replaced it with a neutral, high quality, fabric after finding out ultra suede would cost about $5,000. I believe the whole project was around $1,300 to $1,500 in the mid 1990's

I believe that's a good price compared with what I paid to reupholster the entire cabin in my previous boat a 28' Mariah. The marine vinyl we used was $28 per sq. yard and we had more surface than you do. The price was around $2,000 for both material and labor.

I think that price is a bit high for what you want done--at least for our area. I have had success with two shops in the area. Phil Houten in Saugus does very good work. Two years ago her redid the v berth in a Rinker 29 express for me. Labor was 350 and I supplied the fabric. I will get his number for you tomorrow.
Also Dan at Tidalwave canvass in Framingham is excellent. He came to my boat at WYC to extend the bimini and was 40% below everyone else --- and did a great job. He does do interior upholstry as well. He has a website tidalwavecanvass.com and his phone is 508-816-1134.
Good Luck
Paul

thank you Paul, I found Phil the other day thru Bill at the Auto sound place in Lincoln sq. I know him thru another friend and let him look at it today he will call me with a price later on. I will check out the Fram. place as well. Thanks for the recommendations. Where do you keep your rig?

We joined Watertown Yacht Club last year and so far are pretty happy with it. The major drawback of course is the time to get to the harbor. But we had a slip from the start.
As you may remember I bought Frank's boat Fire & Ice out of your club last spring.Boat has been renamed to Sweet Adeline, keep an out for us in the harbor.
Paul

Paul, how is the boat running?
Got the same quote less $75 bucks for the mid cabin from Phil in Saugus. Looks like we will live with the dated stuff for a couple more years. Save the money for longer trips is what me and the ADmiral decided. thanks for the input all.
Go SCOTT BROWN!!

where does one get sea ray rubber backed carpeting that matches existing carpet. I have a 97 420AC.

If you posted a picture of exactly what you're proposing to get done, we may be able to give you a better idea on pricing.

I got some estimating on reupholstery at the end of 2009. I confess I broke down and found a walking foot sewing machine that was around a year old and taught myself how to upholster. Now I can repair/replace anything on the boat relating to upholstery, canvas, eisenglass, etc.

I do upholstery just did my aft burth for A 1990 420 sundancer and if he is willing to do all that for that price you got A STEAL if I did it you would be looking at 3000.00 and that is cheap

I had my back bench redone with Sunbrella and it was about $2K for the work and material... FYI...

I will try to post a picture within a day or so, as I got a similar price from another shop. I think the price is fair especially if 2 shops were within $100. Just not in the budget.

Good news, I found an old timer to do the interior for $500 including material. I saw his work and he is pretty good, been doing it for 30 years. Here is a picture of the before taken with my camera phone. He is using nice quality vinyl from Soft Sail I beleive, the same catalog the $1150 uphols. had. I just got thru shampooing the pieces and found him!!
It is about 12 -14yards of material. Admiral is happier than me.

Hey Paul, I am dropping off the entire outside cockpit upholstery from my 300 sundancer to Phil, tomorrow. I made all new panels, seat backs and bottoms, and coated them with 3 coats of epoxy. Thanx for the referal. Come to find out, after seeing him the other day, we both recognized eachother. We used to socialize through a mutual friend about 25 years ago. Small world!

That's nice looking work.

Not trying to pee in your cornflakes- but try to find another way to fasten the vinyl other than staples. As soon as you start punching in a few hundred staples, the moisture barrier you worked so hard to achieve with three coats of epoxy is shot. Water/moisture will wick into the plywood through all those tiny penetrations. Just sayin'...

Back when I did the interior on a few of my cars, I used 3M contact cement to hold the vinyl onto the panels, that may work for you. Just dry fit the pieces prior to using glue or you will have problems. Stretch the material a little first so it goes around corners easier.

Yea, I agree with you on water penetration, but what was orig. done by searay in 1988 lasted for 22 years. What I have done will last at least that. I have tried the adhesive route in the past to avoid staple holes, but as the sun and heat warms things up, the vinyl pulls away and looks like crap. Staples are just the only answer. Thanx for the compliment. Dave

I apologize for the silly question, but I'm about to embark on a similar project. Would putting some type of sealant over the staples minimize the wicking effect? I hadn't really given that problem a thought util you all brought it up here in this thread. Just a thought?? thanks:huh:
