The president said, "Hire" those people who have been out for long periods on unemployment!

So I did.... That one employee out of 18 that just cant make in in on these cold Wisconsin days. Today, His car wont start again! and doesn't know if he can make it out his driveway.

I asked him if he has a battery charger? "Yes" he replied. Then I said, The last snow was last Friday. Have you not been out your drive way since then? His reply- Well my wife has! She goes to work every day. She is a manager.

He made is 130 days and I have a feeling no matter the circumstances. He will be long term on our unemployment.

So, just how am I supposed to tell the long term folks from the short term folks you ask?
Just read post number one, that's your first sign. I can hear the interview now...so how long have you been unemployed and how many interviews have you gone to during that time?

I am so damn tired of weak, lazy people and their excuses. Go away.

They hard part about that is they act like small business owners just have this pile of cash sitting around and we should put it to work... Putting people to work... Plus if people don't have the skills or motivation we lose customers. I don't have the flexibility to hire people and be a training ground. Plus you lose talent if you bring people on that are not helping.

I agree. I've called in 1 day in the past 2 years at my current job. Sucks that my hardwork pays for others to be lazy.

And what about the other buzz line he threw up last night, "give America a raise" how? How in the he'll am I supposed to do that? My wife and I haven't seen one in over 6years now, my taxes have gone up, insurance has gone up, everything has gone up but our income!

"HE" doesn't care about anybody but himself. Period!

Regarding the employee hired off long term unemployment. Tough decision to fire him. If I do I feel he will certainly get unemployment.
That would piss me off to know end.

He is using the cold weather as his excuse. Problem w/ that is 17 others can make it in.

The question is can he become reliable? ( according to my President he is a fine guy ) Knowing he WILL get unemployment. I'm kicking myself either way. The climate here is very tight for hiring.

We had a pretty good snowfall one time, near 2’. I knew it was coming like every one else, so I got up at 4AM to open up the driveway. My driveway is over ¾ mile long, after that I plowed a mile of town road that was hilly, because few live off that road it’s usually last to be done by town crews.

That afternoon I was talking with the VP and he asked me a question…’Woody, how is it you can make it in but the others with 50 foot driveways are still snowed in and won’t be seen until tomorrow?’ I suggested that it might be a good question to ask them;) There were some unhappy faces around the office for a couple days after that storm. Me…I was smiling like a chessie cat. I rarely missed work, I usually put it first except when I was about 22yo hanging around with the twins, there were a couple times I was still partying when I should have been at work.

Well let me add this, Rhank you for hiring this guy...one less that our hard earned tax money will have to pay to stay at home. You're a good man!

I did too. She worked for long enough to get on the health insurance plan, then started calling in, showing up late, and mouthing off, like she wanted to get fired, so she did. Two years later, she's on my unemployment and got some government subsidy to pay for my Cadillac insurance Cobra plan until Cobra ran out 18 months later. Then she took a job at my health insurance company, got fired there and is on my unemployment until she maxes it out and then can switch to their unemployment for another 18 months and continues the Cadillac health insurance with the government subsidy. She's living with her mom, who has free rent from the government, while collecting unemployment pay and having the same health insurance my family enjoys, for FREE.

That is disgusting. She probably feels like she is ENTITLED to all that "free" money.

Woody,
Thats great that you make it in during heavy snow storms. I'm sure having a plow set uup is a huge help! My driveway is about 125' by about 20' wide. Last year when we got 30" of snow it took me 10 f*#king hours to snow blow & shovel it clear! I own my own business but needless to say, if I had to punch a clock there was no way it was going to happen. Plus, what about the kids? The schools close for that kind of snow here. Lots of 2 income families on Long Island. At least one of the parents has to bang in just to watch the children.
So, although there are definitely abusers & gold bricks, many people have legitimate reasons for missing work after a blizzard.

Before this year the last time I called in sick was 2008 ,and we have unlimited sick .its how you where raised as immigrants no one in my family has ever collected unemployment period. If the weather is going to get bad we know days ahead of time so you make arrangements bring someone in the day before .although if I owned my own business I'd prob play hooky a lot to go on the boat !!!!

My father used to work with his best friend in the same shop. They went thru high school together. This guy was like family to us growing up. He was deaf in one ear.
Well my Dad advanced to be the supervisor therd. His friend now worked for my Dad. A bit too often his friend would miss work or be late for the company's taste. If he was sleeping on the wrong side he wouldn't hear the alarm. Deaf in one ear and the other in the pillow. My Father would cover for him. But in the end hee could only say so much. They told my Dad that if his friend was late 1 more time, fire him.
Dad would call him in the morning to help him wake up. I remember that since I was a kid eating breakfast then. This was the agreement the two of them had temporarily while his friend built a bed shaker.
He built a timer operated device to shake his bed and wake him if he couldn't hear the alarm. Problem solved. He worked there for another 20 years before a stroke took him down.

Point is you have a few options. All of them are right as there are no bad answers.
You can just fire his ass. Perfectly understandable. Or try (and possibly waste your time) to help him figure it out by eliminating the excuses. Something like have him sign a agreement or something for a new battery for the car. This way the excuse is gone. If he's late and you fire him you can keep the money from his last check for the amount of the battery.

Some people get it. Others need a kick in the ass but get it then. Sadly others never get it no matter how hard you try to show them the way.

In my world, old guys rule! It seems that the younger generations don't get it. They want my company to give them everything. b!t(h and moan, b!t(h and moan while the two older guys show up on time do their job and keep their mouth shut. We build machines here that make splines that need to be within ten thousands of an inch (0.0001"). The older guys know how to make it happen, the young guys whine and b!t(h no matter how many times we show them.

Attendance, wow wee! Got one that has every excuse in the book for being late. Another one calls in sick 5-ish times a month. These two are going next to the unemployment line next as I have warned them both in writing.

God I wish I didn't read this thread as now I'm going home PI$$ED off. Way to go Mike! LOL.

Sorry but the best guys I hired already had a job. I offer good wages, insurance, uniforms and flexable time and got the cream of the crop. It worked out because the business that lost these guys replaced them with the type of guys who would work for what my competitors offered.

Guess what, my business grew with the the higher employee cost due to the better work we performed. My customers knew that we would do it right in the first place and if there was a problem the fix would be quick and free.

My employees knew that I paid them once to do it right and redo's were on their dime unless caused by the part or adman issues. We had very few recalls and I never heard any guff from the guys who had a redo.

I sold that business for a profit and one of my tech's took over and continued to manage it for the new owner.

All that being said I did hire day help for painting, prepping and other project requiring less skill. Again I always asked for the same folks from the temp service becaused they worked.

So where is the disconnect in employment? There are agencies that handle temps and quality employers to hire the skilled. The disconnect is the system that rewards lazy, idle, feed me types and continues to pay for them on my dime. Abled body people crying foul while all the while milking me to support them.
