The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Anyone have any experience with "STRUTPRO" removal tool. I want to remove cutlass bearing but do not want to remove shaft. Is it worth it to buy this tool 400.00.? Does the tool work good or its a piece of garbage? Mechanic wanted to drop the struts is this a good idea?

It's larger than any "stuffing box wrench" I could find. Go to Harbor Freight and get a large cheap pipe wrench. Your problem (with V-drives) will be swinging the wrench handle. My boat was straight drives so it was easy to get the wrench in there.

Looks similar to what the yard uses to replace cutlass bearings. There is no need for shaft removal or strut removal. Removal of the struts requires a re-alignment of the struts. Not a good idea.

Does anyone know where I can rent a "STRUTPRO" tool? 1 1/4 x 1 1/2 x 5 cutlass bearing.

On my '89 340DB they could not get the cutlass bearings out - way too corroded in there. They wanted to either pull the struts or pull the shafts. I was dead set against pulling the struts so they pulled the shafts. BUT they couldn't get the couplers off so they had to cut them, then the shafts were scored at the bearing area. So it became shafts, couplers and bearings to the tune of $2300.00. Had to be done.

AH, the great debate! Tides or PSS. I have Tides strong seals, one of which is failing (port). I am going with Tides to replace - the improved system is now called Safe Seals. Winter project. I have a friend that replace his Tides with PSS on his '95 370DA and he's very happy. Don't think you can go wrong either way.

I need a photograph of a Rudder Support bracket installation for a 1988 340 Sundancer. My brackets are missing. I need to see which way they are positioned. The top of the bracket has a long and short support which tilts the top of the support bracket. I don't know which way to install. You can pm me and I will give you my email. Thanks

I know not worth the $$ to convert, but wouldn't it have been nice if our 340s came with the Yanmar 6LP diesels!!! Check out these performance improvements in a 1986 390DA:
1986 39 Searay 454 gas to Yanmar 6LP diesel 40 gph at 18 knot cruise to 18 gph at 26 knot cruising speed!!!
I saw a pair on eBay for $25k...man hope Santa can fit them under my tree!

What do you recommend for a 454 engine replacement Alot of vendors sell the rebuilt ones but I wanted to ask what others have replaced theirs with. Thanks,

Freygreer- The previous owner repowered my boat in 2009 with S&S Rebuilt engines. They've treated me well :)
I think I even had warranty on them up until recently. But yea, it was just a core exchange for the same engine model/type, so no real performance upgrades.

if I were doing both engines I'm afraid I would probably step up to the 8.1 or 8.2 injected
If I spend that much money ...go big 1 time.

Why wouldn't you want to lighten the load to a fuel injected 383 / 6.3L? That's what most sites recommend if replacing with gas.
Seems like a better power to weight ratio, and should be better on fuel too.

This would be a great swap but my concern would then become what issues would you run into mating the small block to the existing drive?
But I would definitely go with something from this century. Just to have the full fuel injection with the option of doing the electronic engine monitoring would drive me to that decision

Would my Onan genset have any kind of zinc ??
if so where might it be ??

If you have one it'd likely be in the heat exchanger.
