The big old 80's 340 owners thread

I just bought a 1985 sedan bridge 340, powered by twin Chrysler 130 hp Diesels. the problem is I am only getting about 10-12 knots speed. She has 20 Props pitched 20 deg. Will changing the pitch on the props give me more speed. ( I want 15-18 knots). The fuel consumption is good about 2.5 gallons per motor/hr. All help appreciated.

Hey Guys,
Hope you are all well. I'm looking at swimplatforms.com to upgrade. They quoted $2200. Good? bad? The functionality of the new one 39 inches vs stock 22 inches is really attractive. thoughts?
I put one on my 340 and it was the single best investment I made to the boat. You will not be sorry.

We are going to need a bit more info Skook. What is the Max rated RPMs for those engines, are you reaching that? Also props are not measured in degrees. The dimensions are diameter and pitch; pitch being the distance the prop would move forward in one revolution. Your prop could be a 20" (dia) x 20" (rev).

Do you know if these engines are original to the boat? I have never heard of a marinized Chrysler diesel nor was there one mentioned in this article. http://www.allpar.com/history/marine.html But I don't know everything.

I do know there is a lot of info on this site and if you can provide a bit more info you will get more responses. We like pictures.

I put one on our boat and we love it. It really modernizes the older 340. The only down side is because the 340 is already stern heavy the extra leverage makes carrying a dinghy harder. I still do it, but I bury the platform when getting on plane. Once on plane, it's not a problem. I had the yard install my new swim platform higher too. It's mounted so the transom door just clears the deck. 23Oct2012 134.jpg

Question, I really need some help. My starboard drivetrain has a rattle. When idling in gear (forward) it rattles. I can't hear it rattle on plane, but the engines are so loud it might. The port doesn't rattle. I checked the coupling to the v-drive and it's tight. We recently had the boat hauled and dripless seals installed and had the props tuned-up, so I'm thinking the prop I tight and I didn't see any problems with the dripless or like I said the coupler. So, at this point it sounds like the v-drive? Any advice would be appreciated. Can the v-drive be pulled without pulling the engine? Thanks Rob

Great, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks

Has anyone replaced their wood panels around the cockpit and stern with plastic boards like these http://www.eplastics.com/Plastic/Marine_Board-SEABOARD?
I have some rot between my transom door and wash-down water outlet, and thinking of using a plastic board to replace the wood and vinyl. I'm thinking it'd be easier than having to re-do the vinyl and it'd last longer and easier to clean. Anyone done this or have thoughts?

Chrysler did marinize some in the late 70s and early 80s ..the original non turbo dodge truck Cummins....trawler speeds at best.
Looked at a 78 pacemaker with them .. 10-12kt maxxed out but all the torque you could ask for out of 135hp each

Does anyone know where I can purchase a rudder support A frame bracket for a 1988 340 Sundancer? Part # 144030

The motors RPM 3150, I the trany is 2-1 ratio, According to my prop guy the pitch is wrong and needs to be 23.4 not the 20 it is now. the owner dropped the pitch to slow the boat down. I am going to have to pull her out of the water and get the props re pitched.

don't search Chrysler
search Cummins
if it is the inline 6 it will be a 5.9l

The motors are Mitsubishi 130 hp 3150 RPM. Anyway I am pulling off the props and getting them re-pitched to 22" with a 1" cup. The Prop company has a great online calculator to allow you to get the props right. I need to check a few things to make sure I am inputting the info correctly. What is the beam at waterline, length of boat at water line and draft. Weight of boat (11,400 is what I found on some old literature). Also I need to know the gear ratio of the trany (2:1?). Any help is appreciated. the website is www.vicprop.com if anyone is looking for this info.

Trans ratio may be stamped on the tranny itself.

Does anyone know the wrench size for a 1988 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer Rudder Stuffing box?
