The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Mike, I was having the same type of issues with my port side V-drive a few years ago. It is quite an undertaking to get to the seal. I would have atf show up in the bilge with no trace of where it was coming from. It only occurred when I would run up at cruising speed. If memory serves me correctly the seal cost around $20. The issue is you have to remove the exhaust. disconnect the drive shaft and pray that you are able to slide it aft. If you can't slide the shaft aft you have to unbolt the trans from the engine then slide the entire engine aft to be able to remove the engine. I think all told it cost me around $800 to have the $20 seal replaced. I didn't have the patience to tackle it myself so best of luck. (as a word of wisdom, It takes two people that can work together to put the exhaust back on the risers.) Good luck Mike, best of luck!

Ya gotta love the $800 repair for the $20 seal!:smt043

I've already got visions of an over-engineered 4x4 A frame with a chain hoist dancing through my head.
Beyond the exhaust and risiers, I've got the additional thrill of the freshwater cooling system to get out of the way.
One way or another, she will be indoors this year and I 'should' have the time to deal with it.

Besides, I've got to get to work on my quota to keep my good standing in the Hole In The Water Club right?
By the way, Jim - we need clarification does the Hole In The Water Club fiscal year start at the beginning or end of the season?

As secretary at arms it rolls on the calendar year.

Mike,
Forgot your closed cooling. Oh the joys of boat ownership!

There is an old golf saying - 'They call it golf because all the other four letter words were taken'.
There are obviously times where 'boat' would also fit in place of 'golf'.

The other thing I need to take care of this off season is rebuilding the 'vacu-suck' head system. Funny, I'm now looking forward to that!

But even if I have to drop 8 bills to get this v-drive cured, I'm still at the 'no complaints and no regrets' stage of boating.
(Although I may have to start knocking over liquor stores to supplement my income.)

1988 340 Sundancer Vdrive. I went to check the oil in the V drives. One read empty the other full. I checked the dipsticks against one another and one is shorter than the other one. I placed the longer one in the other trans. Now it reads full. Is there a left and right dipstick on the V drives?

anyone know what our Sundancers burn hourly at 3100-3200 rpms?

thanks!

I tried to order seals for my windows from Taylor made systems. They told me they couldn't sell it to me because I am not a dealer. In addition they told me they don't sell to Sea ray dealers as well. How can I order these seals?

Jim - Nice job on the flat screen mounting system
You do know that added weight is going to slow that rocket ship down right? :smt001
