The big old 80's 340 owners thread

So I sent my props out and the prop shop said they were fine. We spoke about going to a four blade and he said he didn't recommend it. He suggested i go with the size I had 16x14 but go to nibral with a progressive pitch.

Anyone experienced w such a prop?

Got my genset running well yesterday finally. put some plugs in the old Onan ...at 30 bucks apiece.. and she ran great on both cylinders but would shut down after about 5 minutes of running loaded or unloaded. The marina tech that was working on another just like it down the dock said it "has to be the point set" and to check for spark ...there was none. So he graciously offered to sell me a set for 150 bucks ...I declined his offer...did a little more research in the books in the boat and checked the coolant in the heat exchanger. about 1/2 gallon of coolant later she is golden and ran perfect for over 30 minutes at a 50A load. I get the idea that this tech is a guesser type parts changer.

Wha - Wha What happened!
I thought this thread had gone completely dead - I stopped getting notifications somewhere along the way!
Glad to see it still kicking!

Greetings All,

Does anybody know where the blower for the power vent is located on a 340 Sundancer of our vintage? Is a a run of the mill blower?
Admiral has just informed me that the lights are dimming and no air is coming out when the switch is thrown now

Behind here. I think its the same as a bilge blower yes.

That is where mine is but not the same as a bilge blower... much smaller
Also found out with the camper up I can air condition the deck area by turning it on

This is driving me nuts - I'm not getting notifications about new postings anymore :smt013

sorry,,,i don't remember size.

but while boat was running ok , before it starts it stall out, it was running 26-27 mph at 3000.

then started its stalling out. driving me crazy and ruining what summer is left. i think there is junk in tank. i have replaced fuel filter, added separator water fuel separators, cap , rotor, plugs last yr. i give up.
i will post photo of props, but i know u want numbers.

gordon

Flash,
i had a similiar issue. Check a small vacuum hose coming off your carb to the fuel filter. I had a kink in mine, simple replacement, boat ran perfect after. It was once a clear tube but now I'm sure it is yellowish. Check it out.

thanks for advice, but i resolved issues. first, points on starbd engine needed to be replaced, secondly, i added another larger fuel / water separator. that means i was running a large fuel/water sep and small fram fuel filter. mechanic said it was to much restriction, so he pulled out small fram filter. now boat will run 4000-4100. but only for 20 minutes, then the fuel was collapsing, down by the fuel pump where it makes a 90 degree bend! so, i then replaced fuel line. NOW, boat runs good and hasnt stalled out in an hour of running time.

i guess age and our new gas wore out fuel line. mechanic, colony marine algonac mi(which i would recommend ) said it is a common issue on older boats.

one other thing to state , is the port engine is counter rotating!!

I get a lot of gen parts from ASAP "Parts for Techs". Just do a Google search and you'll find it. They have a full tune-up set for just a little more than this guy wanted to charge you for points! Problems with the points is common in these gens.

I just had mine re-done and went with 16.5 x 16.5 and they work great. GPS SOG was 21.9 mph at 3200 rpm in fresh water. This boat came with a 17 x 17 prop. 06102013 008.jpg

New query...
all of my port side guages are erratic
tach reads off about 2-400 rpm from the stb tach but the throttles are even and the boat runs out dead straight
port fuel guage drops to empty on acceleration and on plane with a minimum known 40+ gallons in it
temp guage **may** read a little low...145* while stb is at 160*
oil guage **may** read low @ 30psi at idle while stb is @ 40psi...not had a mechanical guage on it to verify.
and last but not least the sync guage just kinda wherever it wants to be when it wants to go there
is there a common ground for all of the port guages that ISN'T tied to the stb guages ???

Update: Basically 21 amps at full load in cooling mode.
In the 1988 manual it states the following full load draws:
16 amps for condenser (AC in cooling mode, 18 amps if heating mode)
2.9 amps for compressor
2.0 amps for the raw water pump

Anyone know the starting amp and running amp draws of the 16,000 BTU CruiseAir air conditioners in our boats?

Thanks!

Hi Jim,

I've got the complete wiring diagram for the 89 (somewhere) and you are welcome to it but my fear is the 85 might be a bit different.
If you dont think that it is to brittle, you might try pulling the port side helm breaker panel off, reach in and start tugging (politely) on wires
and see if you can narrow down the culprit.

BTW: All I did to get the wiring diagram was contact SR customer service.

Update on the ventilation blower....

The thing was frozen solid. Cost of a new one was about $80 + delivery. Went to West Marine, bought the $29 inline 3 inch blower, 1 foot worth of 3 inch hose, and cut off part of the original centrifugal housing to use as a flange and about 30 minutes later....
Might be a touch louder than stock but I use it for the same thing that Jim does - cool the cockpit when the canvas is on.

I just bought my first boat 88 Sundancer 340. I need to re-bed the rails. Is this job difficult? Can you get access to the bolts with out removing headliner? How long to complete job? Also Where can I buy front windshield track moldings? Do anyone have part numbers? Thanks for your help. Dave

1988 Sea Ray 340 7.4L 3200 RPM- 12 KTS am I doing something wrong? What speed should I have? What is the best way to get this boat on plane? Full Gas and 5 Adults. Bottom of boat clean.
