Structural hull damage 2005 SD

I agree, it seems like it is some kind of freeze damage, especially since this was such a harsh winter. There still has to have been a breach point to start with and that is what is confusing. Like I said, I don't run this boat hard. There has not been any wake that I have hit hard that would have made me think I did any damage, nor did I hit any underwater obstruction. I have kept it on the same lift for almost 10 years. Unfortunately I have limited photos. The boat is 3 hours away and that is what the marina sent me. If Sea Ray doesn't some up with a solution, I hope that my insurance will cover this.

Apparently there is cracking on both the port and starboard side, but the starboard side is the only crack that goes all the way through the hull.

Is it where the forks of the lift truck rest?

What type of lift - is it on straps, a cradle or bunks?
Insufficient support or pressure points when on the lift could be a possible cause over time - just another thing to investigate.

It is a floating Poly Lift with polyethylene bunks. I would hope that is not the problem as they are one of the best hoists on the market and it is the primary means of keeping the boats out of the water at our lake.

Just a thought....take a look at the bunks and see that they are straight (or damaged) . If a boat wakes you, seems it would put pressure in the area of the damage.

The area with the yellow stain kind of looks like water has been draining and running there for some time, doesn't it? Are there similar stains on the other side where there is no crack?

I would think awhile, stains usually point to wood rot.
Looks like a project that could lead to a "big can of worms" once the digging starts on the inside.
The thing to watch with the repair is that they get any wood laden with moisture dried out and/or replaced if rotted.
Not only with possibly cored strakes but up into the transom too.

Brent,

There is not much more i can add. However, i would pull out your SR manuals from the original delivery packet to see how long the warranty is. As i recall SR offered a limited lifetime hull warranty to the original owner some time after i purchased my 230. Later they went back to a five or ten year warranty. My next step would be to take up Rusty on his offer and see if he can help.

Good luck.

The way I see it...the next step is to go look at that boat, the lift, talk to the marina folks, get some expert opinion from glass people or perhaps a surveyor....the sooner the better. I don't see how one can take this straight to SeaRay without having a good idea of what happened first. With some investigation you may find the ball belongs in someone elses court.

I'd go with Rusty's offer in a heartbeat.

He's the inside guy with Sea Ray that you need.

When I had my 240SD I was told the hull was built without wood coring. Does anyone know if it has coring or not?

Dave,

When I took the SR tour in 2002, I was told at the time that only transoms were cored for my boat and the 240SD, both of which were being built at the Telico plant. My 230 is an Arizona boat and has a composite stringer grid.
