So,,, how's this "Change" thing going for everybody??

Cool.

You're fired because your ugly.

just practicing.

Hey! You can't do that. My hull has Constitutional rights to be blue! I'm gonna sue!

And you are happy about being a socialist? Do you have any idea what the cost is going to be to your children to pay for you to have this federal work? I know, you don't have a clue. I feel sorry for you.

Wow!! You don't know me from Adam, yet you have no problem jumping all over me because my partner and I are trying to keep our company's doors open and the people we employ a place to work and earn a living - boy, what a Socialist concept!!

Five months ago, we were looking at cutting everyone's salaries to half because there was nothing, and I mean NOTHING, out there for work. The architecture/engineering industry had record layoffs in January with nowhere for these people to find work. My brother-in-law lost his job last August as a designer and is still unemployed.

Our industry was first hit hard last January of 2008, and we've spent a lot of our retained earnings just so our staff can provide for their families and stay off of unemployment. That money is running out.

So yeah, I am going to take Fed work if it allows me to keep my company open, staff employed and provide for my family while allowing me to finally sleep at night without worrying about making ends meet at the office and at home. Because if I don't, the only other option I have is to go out of business and lose everything I have; right now there are no employment opportunities for architects right now.

So go ahead and call me Socialist because I'm trying to take care of my family. Because unlike you, I can't sleep my family of 5 on an 18 foot bowrider even though its paid for!!

Stumbled on this today...was all too telling for me.

"The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield, and government to gain ground."
- Thomas Jefferson to Edward Carrington, Paris, 27 May 1788

I think I might be getting my first piece of the 'change' pie. With the new 'Cash for Clunkers' bill that both houses just signed. I have an older 1999 Isuzu Trooper that I've been thinking of getting rid of for something newer......It just became valuable to the tune of $4500.......Now, if Obama could just hurry up and make it official by June 30th, I could parlay this with some other incentives on the table and buy a new car for about half price.....

It must get less than 15 mpg and your new vehicle must get more than 20 mpg for you to qualify. Bye the way, it gets you a government voucher that you have to mail in for and hope it does not get lost in the mail. :smt101 If it gets lost, oh well!

It must get less than an EPA combined of 18 MPG......EPA combined estimate for the trooper is 17......vehicle I'm considering is over 28.....I even get green credits......I'll just have to burn some extra diesel that week to make up for it.....

I think the Dealer waits on the hook for the rebate....just like with all other rebates. Otherwise, many folks won't have the extra $4500 in cash or credit to make the purchase....

Then several people have it wrong then because those are the numbers a dealer told me just a few days ago.

Excerpt ....

Owners of sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks or minivans that get 18 mpg or less could receive a voucher for $3,500 if their new truck or SUV got at least 2 mpg higher than their old vehicle. The voucher would increase to $4,500 if the mileage of the new truck or SUV was at least 5 mpg higher than the older vehicle.

Dealers participating in the program would receive an electronic voucher from the government for the trade-in to apply to the purchase or lease of a qualifying vehicle. The bill directs dealers to ensure that the older vehicles are crushed or shredded to get the clunkers off the road.

Sounds like a great program to me. Wish they would limit the rebate to cars built in the US (over 75% American parts and assembly)

This way it would help with American jobs in addition decrease our use of oil.

Some people just don't get it, do they?

No. . .I admit to not getting it at all.

So. . if a Toyota is made in Georgia and. . . a GM is made in Mexico. . . .

Which provides more American jobs?
Which one helps the American economy more?

Good question. OK. . the assembly point is one thing. Where are the parts coming from? I am sure the ten cent screws are made locally. The Engines are probably coming . . .where? I am pretty sure the Toyota engines come from Japan. Does GM build engines in the US. . .or is that also moving overseas?

So in terms of jobs. .. . the situation is already muddy.

In terms of profit. . .Toyota profits go to Japan. Where does that money go? First it goes into the Rich Guy's bank accounts. What do they do with it? Obviously, most of it is reinvested. So if a Japenese guy invests in Japanese companies. . .where are the jobs created?

I guess mostly Japan. . but if they invest in Toyota. . .they are building plants in the US. Anything else that builds infrastructure. . .the actual "jobs" are in China, right?

And if a GM exec invests. . . they will invest in a company that is building things. . .in China?

This is not an easy analysis if one is actually interested in something more than hyperbole.

I remember the old arguments about Nafta. The case was made that it is better for the consumer if a sweater is made in Mexico for $10 than it would be if the sweater was made in the US for $20. I never understood the argument. To me, the sweater would cost $40 in TJMax and $80 in Macy's regardless of where it was made.

you mean like toyota honda?

Not necessarily, as you probably know - many foreign car companies have built plants right here in the US, whereas some “American” car companies make some of their models in Mexico

Opps - Comsnark beat me to the punch and had much better details of what I was saying

I'm going to buy a Toyota Vibe....I mean a Pontiac Matrix....no no..it's a Pontiac Toyota...or is it a Toyota Pontiac..........Oh, hell,......whatever it is, GM is giving me extra money to the tune of $2K because I currently have a GM car....a 2008 Cadillac....(Attorney filled it under the Lemon Law as I type).....GMAC is giving me $2K extra in my GM Visa account just because......I'll get the dealer to discount and contribute a few $$$$ also........and everyone's children here, including my own, are financing me for $4.5K and rewarding me for buying a gas guzzler in the first place....and not rewarding those who bought economy cars in the first place....all this 'and' I get to look patriot driving down the road in a domestic car (wink wink) while knowing that I 'really' have a car with Toyota engineering and reliability......
