Slow down!

Every Captain is responsible for his wake and any damaged caused by it.

now just imagine you are the owner of the trawler and you go out for a day of boating. Your just about to slice your cheese sandwich in four pieces , the only food your brought for your entire crew. And bam hit by a rough wave. That totally pisses them off.

Now imagine your the captain of the sail boat. The one that still has the origional fuel in the tank. It's time for cocktails so you pour out the gin. The only liquer on board. You start dunking the one ice cube you keep on a string into the glass and bam rough wave. That totally pisses them off.

So my advice is pass slow and take in the show. That pisses them off even more

For crying out loud !!!. :smt021. He was in open waters !! .
Its fair game out there.. I can just see it now ??.
I'm out in the lake and somebody tells me to slow down.
Guess what buddy !!. Thats NOT going to happen. :smt001

Good grief Wayne, I sure am glad I don’t boat in your neck of the woods! Here’s the thing, we are all out there sharing the water together, so while you are operating your boat think about the other guy as well and treat him as you would like to be treated. If you have to swing wide, or slow down so you don’t rock the hell out of someone when you pass, then that is what you do. You do not impress me by flying by and throwing a 4 foot wake that is going to smack me broadside!

I can remember coming home from a trip to St Michaels and as I, and 5 other boats from our group, came into the 6 knot no wake zone of Kent Narrows, here comes from the other way this beautiful 52 Sedan Bridge. Well he no sooner cleared the 6 knot zone when he proceeded to slam the throttles and throw this huge wake at us. Well at that very moment I lost all respect for the “captain” of that pretty 52 footer, and was thinking “what an *******, I not impressed!”

I guess what I am trying to say is, think about the other guy and give them the same respect that you would like for yourself. Bottom line.

Think of someone passing you to port in open water, 50 yards away going 12mph faster than you, heading to the same destination, and obviously throwing a wake, because even at your speed, he'd throw a wake. Would you throw your hands up in the air?

I'm not sure we are all on the same page with the definition of "open water". If I am truly in "open water" and someone passes me 12 knots faster than me 50 yards away, I'm pretty sure I would not be happy. I throw a big wake so I have to be careful. If I blew by someone at 50 yards, I have a feeling they would call the CG on me...

Good point.

The boat passing you is 7 feet shorter, 50 yds away and going 10.4 knots faster than you. You calling the CG?

No... because there is no way the guy could get by my wake... ;-)
