My first day of training the instructor asked if anyone felt they would have a hard time shooting someone. Nobody raised their hand but then he said 'good, cause if you do then you need to leave here now'

Hey Boatman, I've given a lot of thought to what you wrote and I think I have to take a position that's counter to what the class members answered to what the instructor questioned.
Think about it from this angle....if your average Joe on the street was asked that question, and were told to give an honest answer, I would bet most people would answer "yes" that they would have a problem shooting someone with a weapon. To most people, the thought of shooting and possibly killing someone would be the most repulsive thing they could imagine.
I suspect the people in your class, likely not knowing each other and not wanting to appear like a wimp, would answer the way they did.
If I were teaching that class my comments would have been something like this: "You people are here to learn how to shoot and to shoot accurately. We're going to also cover when you can shoot someone and when you legally shouldn't. I imagine for most of you the thought of having to use your gun to shoot another person is reprehensible; and it should be. Taking another person's life is not an easy thing to do and I hope in this class you will learn when you're justified in doing so and when you're not."

This was discussed 'HEAVILY' in both renewal classes (8 years CC) with the same instructor.
My 1st class, during the 1st hour, I remember being full of bravado expecting to come out blasting, until he brought up taking a life in the discussion, which turned out was a big part of the class. I am grateful that it was. It really made me think about what I would be capable of. Long of the short of it, it would take a lot for me to take a human life. Maybe some people are built for being quick on the draw (I'm not patronizing here), I discovered I'm not. When my CC expires, I will still take another class and will probably purchase another firearm. I'll still shoot with friends, hunt and at times, I may carry if I think the situation requires it. However I won't be the one on here to tell you it wouldn't be difficult. Heck, I get Buck Fever and have a difficult enough time with that.

I’m not going to lie. I don’t want to ever have to draw the gun. Shooting some one is the absolute last thing I’d ever want to have to do. Even in the simulator it’s kinda tough but that’s why I use it.

You could be right. If it came down to my life or someone elses I don't think I'd have a problem defending myself. I hope I never have to find out but if it ever happens it would be because the other person put themselves in that position.
And yes, the simulators are great. We had to do a few scenarios each year at qualifications and yes your heart rate goes up and palms get sweaty. I'm a pretty good shot (slightly over average I'd say) and one scenario was in a parking lot with a guy about 20' in front of me with a gun coming towards me. I pulled and fired and my first shot hit the ground 1/2 way between me and him. My following shots hit him except the last one went over his right shoulder but I was surprised that I fired that early
Have you participated in force on force training with airsoft or simunition? The stress factor goes up when you have someone shooting back at you. BTW, siminution is not painless.

no have never done that but have heard stories...lol
I have not done force on force, I’d like to. My short range shots are average. My .38 has been tough getting used to. It gets the job done but I need more time with it. My long range / long arms shots are much better but I have spent a great deal of time (and ammo) shooting those. My Garand, I enjoy it much better than my AR Bushmaster. My Sharps has great long distance long gun.
But, none of those can be carried on my hip. I have no idea how a Garand shooter did it in war time.

Take whatever time you need to get used to it. I carried a S&W model 60 as a backup gun for many years so I had to qualify with it. We shot a standard course, firing 50 rounds from 7.5yards out to 50 yards. I usually fired somewhere in the mid-80's. I learned early on if you get all your shots from the 7.5 and 10 yard ranges right in the X ring, and kept most of the 25 yard shots in center mass, the 50 yard shots didn't hurt you so bad if there was a flyer or two.

Yes, with simunition, and you are absolutely right on both points. For me the biggest revelation was how much I had underestimated the impact of adrenaline and the fight or flight effects on my decision making.

Yep. we went from 2 yards to 25. perfect score was 300. i was usually around 280 but like you said, be on spot close up so you have room for error from further back
I had a salesman pick me up at a Texas airport once in a pickup truck. I had never met him before. So we are driving along and he says his business card is in the glove box and to grab one. I open it and there had to be 7 hand guns in there, just laying on top of each other

I like the challenge to shooting at distance. Not with the handgun but the long arms. My Kentucky long rifle is the best at distance. It was the sniper rifle of its years. The older guns are enjoyable to me.
I wonder what the handgun ownership in TX is to other states. Also the age of most of its owners. Woody always finds those kinda numbers

That is the beauty of force on force training. First time through you are kinda shitting yourself trying to solve the problem. A few more iterations and you are noticing the poorly framed doorway as you are shooting the bad actor. Stress Inoculation is a real thing.
I would think that anyone who WOULDN'T have a hard time shooting someone, probably shouldn't carry. Now if the question was "is there anyone here who wouldn't shoot someone if they absolutely had to?' then the instructor's response makes more sense. Maybe something got lost in the translation.
