Should you buy a gun or not?

Years ago me and my brother-in-law were at the range. He has been a police officer since about 1981ish but he is big into hunting. He has a 300 Rem Mag and I have a 270. I was using my spotting scope to watch him shoot a lead ball that was about the size of a basketball and was hanging from a frame thing by a chain with a bolt going through the links to hols it together. I'm pretty sure it was 100 yards but he says it was 200. Anyway, I'm watching him then I grab my 270 and start watching through the scope. I have a Leopold 4x12. So I told him 'watch this'. I aimed at the chain and actually hit the bolt and it dropped to the ground. First shot. Now I'd like to say that I'm that good but I know if I tried that 100 x I'd be lucky to hit it maybe a handful of times. But the look on his face was priceless when that ball dropped and I called it...lol

very nice shot no matter the distance.

I have my dads 308 and I love the gun. But it is a classic 308 and and I don’t want to ruin the gun. I do shoot it often. My Bushmaster 223 has been great and with some of the additions on her rail, I love it.

I’d like more distance / accuracy. The new Sig bolt action looks as if it will give me both.

Holy crap. I remember looking at one about 15 years ago and said no to $6k for a Mark 82A1

I wish. A good mid to high quality 50 is starting at 10g poorly built ones you can get around 8g. If I’m going to get one I want a high quality well built gun

How are you with recoil in a 9# gun? If it’s not a problem have you considered the good old 300 Win. Mag? Someone mentioned snipers earlier, the M-13? 300WM was Chris Kyles favorite :) not that it means anything to anyone in particular, but it’s saying something coming from a guy who had some pretty awesome weapon systems at his disposal. Built on a plain old Remington 700 action, he used that almost exclusively.

This 300 WM is my favorite. It's a Remington 700 action, Hart custom contour stainless match grade barrel, steel infused epoxy bedded in a McMillan Classic Hunter. The scope is a Leupold VX-III 4-14. I can't shoot it to it's potential, but I can keep it at a 1/2-3/4 minute out to 300 and have no problem hitting 12" gongs at 600 meters, which is the longest range I have access to within a half days drive.

The 300 WM is very popular, easy to find ammo for and a lot of different ammo makers have a lot of different loads so that you can try a bunch to find which one your gun likes, in case you're not a handloader. (that would be another negative to the Fury, you would have to hope it liked the limited ammo you could find for it). If you are a handloader, resize the 300 using a neck sizer so that it head spaces on the shoulder rather than the belt. This cartridge would be my recommendation for what you want to do.

Well then. Gongs or paper?
Check the ballistic tables in your reloading manuals for the BC of whoever's bullet they're loading in it and compare it to a lower pressure round with a sleek heavier bullet. I would for sure stay away from it as a fun shoot a lot gun. At the pressures that I recall reading about from that round, I would be afraid it would wash out the barrel in a hurry. The rifle itself is light, great for lugging around in the field, not so desirable from the bench or a tripod. Just one guy's opinion. Your's is the one that counts.
80,000psi I saw in an article about the round. Kind of explains the odd design, steel and brass.

I like these gun threads, makes me think about guns. I've always been big on .22's. When I was younger I thought some day I'd collect some of the old Winchester pumps. I thought the same on some of the High Standard, Colt, Browning pistols. Some of those guns from years back where good quality, awesome shooters, and nice looking.

I always had enough guns for any kind of hunting I did so spending just to collect never happened, always a more important place to use the money.

A couple days ago I was looking at some of my shot guns, one I've always wanted was Winchester mod 42 pump, a 410. When I was a kid before I was buying my own guns I did a lot of grouse and woodcock hunting with an old HR single shot, someday I'd get a mod 42 I thought...never did.

So I looked online the other day and about had a heart attack at the prices, used and beat up field grade 1,200-1,500 bucks. Minty highgrades as high 18-20K. I wasn't expecting everything to be priced in boat bucks.

Woody, just curious. Where were you looking to find gun values? I have one or two I'm thinking about selling.

Gave myself a third eyebrow with a 300 win. :D

Stopped at a gun shop today. Got me drooling...lol. Actually had a Dr appt and wife went with me and step-son (the detective) works part-time at this shop and we saw his vehicle there when we went past so we stopped there on the way back. My held a handgun for the first time ever...lol. My gun is ALWAYS in a holster unless I am handling it for some reason but she would not touch it. If it was sitting on the counter she would get a cooking utensil out and use that to slide it over...lol. But she has gotten a little better in the last few years and would grab it by the grip with 2 fingers and move it. I have tried to get her to go to the range and I would train her or even have my step-son train her but she said she would feel more comfortable with a qualified stranger. Either way after we left she still said she has no plan of getting one. She knows where mine are kept and I have told her what needs to be done to fire them in case of an emergency. I normally don't like untrained people touching firearms but if the fit hits the shan I'd rather her know how to point and squeeze. My guns don't have safeties (no Glocks do not have safeties...lol) and there is always one in the chamber so pretty cut and dry.

Boatman, is your wife a sister to my wife? They sound like they're cut from the same cloth.
lol. Actually my wifes sister is married a to cop. They got married back in the 80's. He has been a cop since about '81. He has a few handguns, an AR and a bunch of hunting rifles and I don't think his wife has ever touched a gun. So yeah my wife and her sister are the same in that respect. Maybe your wife is a long lost sister....lol

We got to talking about Sig’s new bolt actions Crossbow Creedmore. Some were having issues finding one. Check out Gunbroker there are many listed

I think (hope) I have enough !!!

I won8 a Ruger American .308 bolt action at a Repub tent at our local fair 8yrs back, still in the box waiting to give it to grandson in a couple more years.

... have you considered the good old 300 Win. Mag?...

.30-06 all day long - No problems

Had a 300 Win. Mag. once. Took a real nice buck with it, too.

Never have felt recoil in the field. Will never touch off a 300 from the bench again!!!:(
