Should you buy a gun or not?

I believe everyone should own and learn proper use but I wouldn’t purchase nor license in a way that puts me on any federal or state registry.

That's not accurate. Just shy of 60% of households in the USA have no guns. Gun owners are the minority.

That may or may not be entirely accurate. 60% of households THAT WE KNOW OF don't have guns. Not everyone admits to owning firearms. So that % may actually be lower.

One might argue that 40% of homes in the US have LEGAL/REGISTERED firearms, but saying one is a gun owner is a broad term. There are many instances where there are legal guns owned that aren't registered because they are grandfathered and were family hand-downs (didn't require registration) or might fall somewhere in the 80% firearm category, which is also legal but not registered. Then there is a significant number of households that illegally possess firearms, if you were to also consider them "gun owners".

I would argue that we can't actually put an accurate % of households that own firearms any more than we can put an accurate number of illegal immigrants in this country. There's no actual count and estimates can vary wildly depending on how you analyze the data (to make it reflect what you WANT it to conclude......)

actually as far as immigrants go the US has a very accurate account of them. it just some leaders never want the truth to come out. my Brother worked in the homeland defense and he said he knew exactly where are the illegals are. he just couldn't get them.

Owning a firearm also requires responsibility, temperance and self-discipline. These are virtues the left in our country do not possess.
actually owing doesn't require any responsibility just like owning a car you can drink and drive 156 mph and kill an innocent girl. and then maybe you get caught

Never thought having a gun in the house with kids was a safe play. I keep thinking back about 30 years ago to when my wife woke me up in the middle of the night because she heard a prowler in the house. Turns out she was right. I about crapped myself when I saw the prowler moving around at the end of a dark hall. Not sure to this day what I would have done if I had a gun in my hand. Good thing because the prowler was my two year old who got out of her crib. Long story and I need to cut it short. I just heard the gun store received a shipment of 9mm and my stock it low. Things change. Gotta go.

If you confuse a prowler with a 2 year old maybe you shouldn't have a gun

gallup says 44% so its actually higher than that, but not sure how much higher.

I mean we can debate the statistics all day long, for sure. But it only takes 1 gun to make a household of 5 people a "gun owning household". I think I read individual gun ownership in the 18 and older category is something closer to 30% in the USA. So I'd still argue it's far from a majority situation, particularly when talking about individuals vs households. Even with hand-me-downs, unregistered guns and those illegally obtained.

Dark house, high adrenaline and half asleep. All I saw was movement under those conditions. As I said things change. No more kids in the house. I’m a different person 30 years later. I don’t need to defend my actions then or now to you.

Plus, they really didn't have tac lights mounted to your handgun 30 years ago. Today's modern tools/accessories do change some of the risk of misidentified "intruders".

C'mon do you really need that equipment to tell if someone is 3' high?

A lot of factors can affect your judgement in the middle of the night. How dark is the hallway (pitch black or a night light present? Can you actually see the person or just a moving dark image against a dark background? Think there is no impact on your vision or full awareness when you jump out of bed at 3AM and come across said dark image seconds later? Sure, you might have the opportunity to turn on your nightstand lamp, put your robe on, go take a leak and have a chance to wake up some before investigating. But you may not. Every situation is different. Also, not everyone has 20/20 vision. Combine dark environment, brain not fully functional and less than perfect vision with that situation and yes, there is a higher risk for accidental shooting. The person may be 3' high, but in that exact moment with numerous factors affecting your vision & cognitive ability, one may not perceive that person as 3'. Hence it being a good idea to use a light. Not everyone has a hallway lit by ambient lighting and perfect vision like you might have.

Dude, come on man, we had flashlights 30 years ago.:D

Several years ago one of our county cops was taking his garbage can to the curb. His niece was hidden in the bushes, she played the sound of a snarlin' cougar on her cell phone as a joke. Our public servant pulled his piece and strafed the bushes. Luckily he only wounded her....know what you're shootin' at boys.

I did say “tac lights”, not flashlights. Not exactly the same thing as today’s 500 lumen led’s. But yeah, even being “trained” doesn’t guarantee you don’t make mistakes or rash decisions in the moment.

these were the “tac lights” back in the day…..

40%, 44%, 60%, nobody really knows. Many households have a few rifles and shotguns but nothing that requires registration so nobody knows about them. My grandmother has a handgun my great-grandfather brought over here from Spain in 1917. It isn't registered and as far as big brother knows there are no guns in my grandmothers house. I don't think it works anymore and even if it did I would never fire it anyway but you get the point. I don't think my dad has any guns that require registration but he has a bunch of rifles and shotguns that were bought over 40 years ago so may have never been registered even when new but I can't say for sure. So we don't know the actual % of households with guns.
