Am I crazy? We wet slipped the boat last year and with electric at the dock, I only used my generator a few times (although it was a cold rainy summer!).
I run pretty much full tabs all the time. I will soon be adding a 175lb swimplatform to an already stern heavy boat....so I'm thinkin'. Wouldn't the loss of 150lbs or so from the stern of the boat be great!
This would be a "trial" and I would cap everything off good & proper. Kinda funny when people are paying 8-10k to have these things put in!
I don't know if I'll actually do it...but I'm thinking hard on it.
Thoughts?

I can't comment on your boating style, however it'd be crazy for our area. We do a lot of overnighting and a generator is a must! There must be something else you can do for weight balancing.

A genny is a terrible thing to waste.

I think your nuts. Cincy Aquaholic held out for a boat with one, and I followed suit. Hopefully this year you'll be able to get some more use out of it. Maybe add more chain to your anchor rode to increase the weight in the bow?

Same here, since we are in FL my gen has more hours in it than both of the mains on my boat and most everyone here in FL that I know is the same. BUT.....you know your boating needs better than we do so if you feel it is better to be without, then it is your choice. If is was me, I would just deal with it, it is only a 150lbs. I don't think it is going to make that big of a difference on running angle to make it worth while to remove that thing and 'cap' everything so it can be put back in.

Yes, you are crazy. :)

Have you ever heard of someone looking for a boat without a genny?

Seriously, the old saying of better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it applies here.

I'm in the same "boat", only going the other direction! I don't have a gennie on our boat and we spend most of our time on the Lake Erie islands so we don't need one-typically we are at slips on Kelly's, PIB, MB or Sandusky. I've always wanted one, though. I think if I had one I'd anchor out more with the ability to run the a/c. If you decide to divorce it let me know.

If you need to move weight forward relocate your water and holding tanks to the V birth or more forward. I would not remove a generator as it gives you more options for staying in remote areas. But if you are dock person whos idea of boating is sitting at a maina and drinking beer and you never go out over night perhaps no generator is your style.

We typically leave the dock in the morning and return at night....gee, I don't sit at the dock all day. I never said I was gonna sell it or throw it away....just pull her for a "trial" period.....I hardly use the damn thing. To remove my holding tanks and move them would be crazy. I would never run it while sleeping at anchor, to paranoid about CO (which we don't do anyway...we sleep at the slip....nice and calm, not getting tossed around at night by fishing boat wakes).
I envision pulling it out, cleaning it up nice, fixing the slight oil leak it has, a little touch up paint here and there, clean that side of the engine compartment real nice and run the boat without it for a month or so.

I didn't realize that not owning a generator meant that I sat at a marina and drank beer all day. However did you come to that conclusion? Inquiring minds would like to know.

As for relocating water and waste tanks...........I'd think twice before following this advice. Perhaps Northern could enlighten us all on why he feels that this is the best course of action.

I don't have a generator and I don't have any trouble anchoring out, etc. But it's a little milder for temp up here. If it was warmer I'd want the genny. Some of the bigger boat guys have to run a generator just to keep the fridge and freezer going so they think a boat without must be a dockqueen.

I've gone back and forth on whether I wanted to haul the extra weight around or weather I'd be better off with a couple of 6V batteries. My electrical draw is actually fairly low, but there are a few days every year that I'd like to have the a/c going. It all depends on how much power your going to need while away from the dock.

That comment just rubbed me the wrong way last night.

if you run full tabs now, have you thought about increasing the size or the travel of your trim tabs? Maybe that would help offset the additional weight and lower the nose with a LOT less work. Just a thought...

You could always put a Honda gen on the bow..

I pulled my generator out last fall to work on it, and my boat has a very noticable port list... If you pull you generator out, it may affect how you boat sits in the water. I added chain to my anchor and it made a big differend in how my boat planes off... You would have to modify your you Good Windlass to switch to chain, and that is what I would do...

I think it's wishful thinking to expect a noticeable performance difference. That's only the weight of one person standing near the stern. I'd go with a smaller and lighter swim platform first.

And most importantly, don't forget about resale (unless you're going to keep the boat "forever"). In a sea of used boats of the same model, the ones with a gen are going to sell first.

I already have a lewmar with 30ft of chain or so (never measured it).

For the second time....I am not selling or permanently getting rid of the gennie....it was installed at the time of original purchase (I have the paperwork) and I consider it "part" of the boat for all intended purposes.
Now this is some good winter time discussion! LOL....
