Yikes Dave! Why did they have to replace the transom assembly? The parts for that look about right. I know the BIII transom ring and gimbal pins are $ 1400.00 having bought them last spring, so another $2k for the rest of the transom assembly and new bellows, water hose etc would sound about right. 36 plus hours (just guessing at $ 100 / hour) seems like a lot of time.

As for the rest it looks like you have a bunch of additional stuff.

I'm a little disturbed by the labor charge for the trim senders as one of them should have been 'free' because all of the work would have been included in the transom R&R. I am assuming that both drives had the sending units replaced, as the BIII kit is about $ 100 per drive.

As for 13 hours for R&R of a U-Joint after already paying for the drive to be removed, all I can say was did they at least kiss you afterward?

They may have spent that much time on the job, but I don't think they should have unless there were some really huge extenuating circumstances.

Henry

Whats this one all about ?. [ Environmental Charges : 655.51]. :wow:

Labour and parts to replace an an engine of the same type is about 5,000 plus the engine where we boat. Boats are not cars and are hard to work on. I am amazed at the cost each time I get something done. To change oil in a car is 40 in a boat it is 300 becauce it is hard to do. I would say you paid what most of us would for similar work. Did you get a waranty?

Can you negotiate??? Times are tough, I would offer the marine $12K for the whole job, take or leave it...

Already performed, a few thousand higher than anticipated. Yes, I will certianly point out a few things, just trying to figure out what...

Nortern,

I agree in general with what you are saying, but in this case I think it is over the top. I think they charged the flat rate on each job, as if each job were being done all by itself. However, when you pull an engine and replace the the transom ring (that includes pulling the drive) why should you be charged for anything but parts to R&R the trim sender since 100% of the labor is covered in the transom ring job.

Ditto U-Joint, bulk of labor is to get the drive off the boat, once off the boat, u-joint is at worst an hour, certainly not 13 plus hours.

Henry

Whats is the hourly labor rate?
I know winter storeage for your 31 is only 374 thats dirt cheap.
Didnt know motor had to be removed to replace transom plate.
BTW. Why do you need a transom plate?

+1. The labor was already paid for on the transom assembly, any charge beyond parts is theft. That is one impressive screwing, and they didn't include any lube.

come on, I meant drive lube.

And I thought the Ford dealership was screwing me when they tried to charge me for a tire rotation after a brake job..

I agree with Henry. IMHO, that is an outrageous amount of time to bill for the work they performed.

Looks like a MM computerized bill based on job codes and standard hour-rate applied for the particular job. There should have been a reduction to account for the fact that doing one job makes it easier to do the other job (less hours) since the part is easier to reach or fix. I had the same issue arise and if you don't discuss it with the service maanger, you will get a bill for everything. In my case, the manager dropped the price of other items to account for the efficiencies. In your case, eh...wow!..I might well have ended-up with a coronary as a result of getting that kind of invoice...

Edit... Did they give you notice of the costs before they did the work? Not sure CSR is going to help on this... you might need to talk to these people if the manager doesn't explain why this job took so many hours...

I'm glad my boat's on a trailer and I have done all my own work. But on the other hand if I could afford to let someone else do it and still did all my own work, that would probably be better. I have a friend who has a large boat that he keeps in Ventura and says once they pull you out for repairs you can count on spending $10,000.00 before they put you back in. I could not afford to boat at those prices:wow:.

Thanks guys. EXACTLY what I needed.

The double labor has been removed.

Stated Trim unit labor was rewiring all the way up to the dash... so looks ok to me if thats the case.

The paint on the drives were in REALLY bad shape, so the refinish and repaint is ok also. Lots of corrosion and had to be blasted.

Enviormental charge is apparently a state 5% tax...
