Plan on buying Polk Momo's to replace stock Clarion speakers...

I replaced the 4 factory Clarion 6.5s on our 330 with these Clarions:

http://www.consumersmarine.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?r=view&i=520014&cID=CSHOPZ_520014

I also took the 10" sub off the factory 4 channel 120 watt amp and bridge the 4 channel factory amp to 2 channels, with the 4 outside speakers paralleled. I am not a audio guru, but if I understand things right I took a 4 channel amp that was sending 60 watts bridge to four paralleled speakers and bumped it up to 120 watts, or 15 watts per speaker up to 30 watts per speaker. The factory set up was one bridge to the 4 speakers and a 2nd bridge to the amp. So the factory amp was only getting 60 watts.

I put a seperate 2 channel 150 watt Pioneer amp on the sub (a new Marine Kenwood 10") and bridged it to one.

The new Clarion 6.5s sound good, much better then the worn out originals. The highs are not great though and they bass out rather quickly, even with the High Pass Filter turned on at the head unit.

Would Quarts or the Momos be that much better over the newer Clarions? Or can I do some more sub/amp tweaking to improve things?

what good speaker manufacturers have white grills similar to the factory clarions/panasonics used on our boats. I looked at some of the speakers above and the grills really don' protect the speaker. I can see some kid poking his finger through them.

Are you kidding? MB Quart is, arguably, one of the best speaker manufacturers in the world. They are produced with the standard ethic of German engineering with the best of materials available in the industry. Get the Premiums on line, drop them in, and let your boat rock. You don't need the latest version. If money is a factor, get last year's model you will not be disappointed. When you install them, unless you are deaf or love the high's, tune the tweeters down about 3 notches using the crossovers (provided) due to the extremely efficient titanium domes.

That didn't answer my question.:) "How do they sound?" Money is not an issue as I have got two pair of JL Audio M770's on order that cost more than twice what the MB's sell for. I was more interested in a real life personal opinion on the sound quality. Two reasons I didn't order the MB's was they are showing an efficiency of only 87 db (on their website) and I didn't particularly like the looks of their grill (petty).

Wish2fish,

Looks like Rockford Fosgate makes a set that matches well and little fingers can't get through. They are also almost perfectly sized for the SR cutouts.

They sound amazing. I have enough amplification, so the efficiency is not critical. Mine are from the Q line, which is a notch above the premiums. They are probably close to the JLs in price.

OOOHHHH, nice speakers. I was only looking at the marine speakers because I really want to stay with white on this boat. I had black speakers on my old boat but it had a red interior. I still wonder about the efficiency but I assume with the right power they sound very very good. Just out of curiousity watt:smt001 are you driving them with?? You didn't somehow make cover them with a white grill did you?

I'll update some of the pix and add some more when I finally get her out of storage this spring. Hopefully that will be within the next week. You can see the arch speakers in my sig picture. They could be painted white, I guess.

OK, Fair comment. Due to first class German Engineering and use of nothing but the highest quality of materials, these speaker sound awesome. We are talking about the Premium (or above) automotive lines, not the marine speakers. I mounted mine with black grills. I don't mind at all. They don't blend in, but they don't look like cheap stock speakers/grills either.

What is the model # of the MB Quartz you purchased? Did you have to use the new cover or could you use the old Panasonic cover? Did you need to make any modifications at all for the MB Quartz to fit.

Hey Jeff, you got an amp on that boat yet? I just installed one on mine last weekend so if you need any advice holler. I was surprised to find that the factory had already prepared a place where the factory amp goes with a piece of wood backing to mount an amp to. Too bad it is not big enough to mount 2 onto it though because I am feeling the fever to add more. My way of bonding with the boat until the lake levels come down enough to get on the water here in Oklahoma.

Well I finished installing the Momo's tonight and it was more fun than I planned on. The reason was only one of the four holes accomodated the speakers size. I had to "open up" the other three with a sanding drum. I sealed the exposed wood by smearing 5200 on. The speakers sound great. Now I'm wondering what a good amp would do for em...
The thing I wouldn't wanna do is route new 4 guage wire for the power supply to a new high power amp. I fished a wire for my ipod to the dash and THAT was enough fun.
The factory supplied amp is wired with two 10-12 guage wires. Do they do this instead of running one large wire? I know from past experience in my car audio days that larger wire can make a WORLD of difference.

Teekster et al,

I am rapidly becoming an audiophile/efficianado (sp?). I've had a tough week, working exercises during the weekend (standard) and the midnight shift (non-standard). I've gotten by on 5 hours sleep/morning. Today, I kite-surfed for a few hours (near my boat), then went to the boat for a couple of cups of fresh-brewed java and a couple of hours of my favorite classic rock tunes through my 2 10" Kicker subs, 2 eclipse amps, 2 Bose outdoor speakers, and 2 MB Quart Premium component speaker sets.

During that time, I thought about you guys here at CSR, in particular Teekster who provided so much help to me for my upgrade, as well as help to many others. My boat rocks, and if yours doesn't, it will soon.

P.S. It was really cool to periodically step back to the swim platform and view the alien-like sea life in the light of the swim platform lights. Thanks to those guys too.

QSD 216 in the cockpit, PCE 216 in the cabin. I used the MB Quart grills outside and the stock fabric grills inside.

I had to dremel the holes outside just a little. I think the screw holes lined up fine.

I actually have two amps mouted in there now. My boat has the factory upgraded stereo system which I believe consisted of adding the 10" sub and the Clarion Amp.
It also has the factory wakeboard tower in which I added 4 Kicker speakers (w/ light bar) My second Clarion amp runs those. My next project is to replae the 4 Panasonic speakers (in the boat) with either Polk Momo's, MB Quartz or the JL's. I'd prefer not to deal with modififying anything but from what I'm reading on the board it looks like I will. I also want to stick with the white grills. The sysyem realy rocks as is however just like the name of my boat it's "Never Enough"

Does anyone have any experience with the Bose 131 Marine series speakers??

http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&product=131_marine_index

I have 3 different Bose systems at home that I'm very pleased with, but am wondering about their marine series. The ported enclosure definitely has peaked my interest.

I'm also surprised by Paradigm now having a marine line of speakers. I know their surround sound systems are amazing!!

I'd like to see the tower speakers. (there is a thread talking about adding pictures by putting a like to a picture site such as snapfish). I was thinking of adding the kickers to my boat too. Are your amps mounted on an amp rack or just attached to the back of the front seat?

Unfortuately I don't have any pictures of the tower speakers. I just had them installed about 2 weeks ago. I will try to get some the next time I'm out.
I have my 2nd amp mounted below the factory installed amp behind the front seat.
It's a "must have" if you have the tower.
